I stand corrected. It is a little small for a Barris crest, come to think of it. Cool, that Merc must be motivated by a Cad motor.

Yea, I can see that flat shape too. That is odd, everything else on the car is right on vintage style. Those tailights were big in the late '80's/early '90's maybe?

  8. I'm sure you have seen this Merc before. It looks great...til you see the rear. I don't have a rear shot, but maybe someone else does. It has those Caddy "slot" tailights...YUK!!!

  19. The front has 3" lowering,1/2 ton Chevy pickup springs.
The rear has Durant,mono-leafs with 4" blocks. I might be changing that soon though. Those mono's are too bouncy!

Well thats a great recipe...and low budget....i really love the way your merc sits! I may ask for more details down the road when i get to doing the suspension.

  21. I have heard that 1990 Aerostar springs work as well for the front. There was a post about it somewhere on here.

  22. Yea,I saved that post. I'm gonna try those and see if it will make it ride a little softer. Bugger put some on the front of his '50 Merc and it lowered it about 3" and rides bitchin!!!

  23. Do you know what the title was so I could find it? I think I wrote down the Moog part number so I could find the springs but not sure.

  24. I believe you can search...
Cheap and great alternative to lowering 49-59 Fords
Hang on and i'll check if that's it.

    Yep,that's it!

  25. I'll post pic's when I try them out.

  29. Here's a cool story...
I have a Merc scrapbook, that I have been putting together for 25 years. I save all the Merc ads that I find in the Auto Trader and save pic's of Mercs from magazines. I was reading an article about a guy named Kurt who had a bunch of show cars and customs he had found through the years. In the article there was a pic of a Merc he found and bought back in the 70's for $350! I looked at the pic and recognized it! I started looking through my old magazines and found the original ad! It was in a Car Craft magazine want ad section in 1978. Read the acticle pic caption, then read the original ad. It will blow you away!!!! I didn't know Darryl Starbird ever did any Mercs!

    Article pic...
"Kurt's zealous efforts have saved many classic customs;this Merc was chopped by Darryl Starbird in the late '50's and discovered in Dodge City,Kansas in the late '70's
    Kurt paid $350 for it."

    Original Ad...

"SELL-'51 Mercury;Professional chop. Nosed, decked. All bodywork lead. Very good body.Flathead. Nostalgic dream! Restorable with much hard work. All letters answered. Asking $350. Del Bartel,RR 2,Dodge City,Kansas"

    Pretty bitchin,huh?
