Does anyone have any pics of mounting their alternator down low in the scenario where you have a Hurst front-mounted SBC? Or alternative suggestions.

Very keen to take the focus off that big electrical pimple.

    Cheers

I purchased a very inexpensive bracket for mine to move it to the bottom of the motor from our local speed shop.

  3. Paint it black and build a bracket that keeps it down low.

  4. Paint it black and build a bracket that keeps it down low. Or run a generator.

  5. Use a nice neat looking European unit, like an Iskara, or Femsa, or Paris Rhone;

well with that hurst mount none of those snug fit low mounts will work..the hurst will be in the way...and the other issue is if you were running a regular engine mount and a vega box you cant run that snug low mount either.

sounds like your either stuck with this or to drive it another way,
or you could get one of those really small bosh units and try to fab something off of your Hurst mount to hold it. The bosh units are very small..but dont look very traditional either.

or run a pully supported by your hurst mount and a jack shaft back to the alternator that would be back behind the engine mounted off the frame.

I just got a generator. Dirty2 is going through it for me.

If you aren't running power windows, or a bunch of sound equipment then you really don't need an alternator. They came along when cars started having more power accessories. Cars got a long for decades without alternators. No reason they can't now.

I've run them on my daily drivers for years with no problems untill i put a big stereo in my old car. Then I had problems

I doubt you did that with a Hurst mount. I think he may be out of luck. I he had side mounts sure. The Hurst mount pretty much goes rigth where the low bracket would.

Still wouldn't look right. He's looking to make it period correct looking.

What is the cost of one of those 'fake' alternators?

Hell if it's a Hot Rod I'd probably go ahead and run a generator. The Powermaster things are nice but to expensive in my book, $400 in black. Or the hiding an alternator underneath isn't a bad idea though it doesn't charge unless you're moving. But if you are in the quest to make it look correct for a given period and you're not running a hood then an alternator is a pimple, chrome or not. Those that don't understand that are missing a lot of what the HAMB is about.

  19. I will try to post a picture today of my 47 pu alternator. What we did was have our local powdercoater apply a black krinkle finish and used a "farm guard" on the back to help disguise it in looks( local alt shop had it for $5.00) and got a repop DELCO tag for $2.00 and a inexpensive alternative to a Generator or a modern Powermaster style.

There's a low-buck bracket available to mount ugly alternators down low BUT it probably won't work with your type of front motor mount. This one will stay until my buddy found a nice looking generator...

Nope, sometimes the shit just looks, or doesn't, look right. That's one of the reasons I haven't put my roadster together. I had to many things that didn't look right. I needed to go back and rethink the whole thing. When you see someone that put the time and effort into doing it right it's awesome. I applaud those that do.

  23. Woah!!!! Thunderace! I'd like to see this bike finished!!! Thanks, Mike

  24. I have two questions on this subject. I looked in search and didn't really find an answer, so, if I'm building my '29 roadster around an early '70's theme, would a generator still be OK? I remember when I worked for Jack's auto ('70-'74) we still sold a TON of generator parts and regulators.
Second, I'm running a big block. Is there bracketry that I can get ready made to mount a gen on the rat, or will I have to get creative.
I like the idea of the generator, I'm only going to have six or seven circuits so a gen would be plenty of power. Thanks, Mike

Third paragraph here sounds like the way to me!

A hole through the Hurst mount on the rt. side, with a stub shaft and GOOD
pillow block bearing. Then you could decide to park the Alt. right behind the mount, or move it out of sight with a flex shaft of some sort.

  26. Cheers for that Mike, yeah it's looking good nearly finished.

I am fairly sure that the Iskara alternator would fit inside an old dynamo case,
    they are pretty small;

you still get thirty amps which is usually plenty even with a stereo (unless you are running a pair of fifty watt amps ).
I have seen these on E bay at a reasonable cost, but I got to admit I am a cheap skate and went for second hand.

    Amen to that, zman.

Just run a rebult generator and a new regulator and call it a day.

I run halogen head lights, 100W worth or brake lights and heater fan when needed, and I have never run out of juice.

If you scroll to the bottom of the page, there's a mid mount, and a low mount. I've go the mid mount on mine to keep it down in the chassis, but I also have a hood. If you go back to the main menu, there's pages for short pumps and other engines. Something to consider...

    Small Japanese alternator.
    Custom bracket.
    Powdercoated to match.
Downside is that the lower hose goes through the belt.
    It's all about the "look".
