Dave,Thanks, great story as usual. Well I think your statue of limitations has run out with Fred as you guys are still very good friends. Looking forward to seeing you and the rest of the S & S gang next season.

Too bad. I was impressed with his big win in 1970 clinching the national championships. My neighbor at the time was a local jr fuel racer.

Wow, a "9.29" dial in for the little Austin P/U. Where was the photo taken? Looks a lot like the ex C&O Austin of Gene Ciambella (read Conway)

That shot was taken at West Hampton - late sixties - that little p/u was scary fast!
I don't remember the owners name but he was from the Elmont area.

  15. The Donovan-Welch-May Prefect (with an Ai Fibergl*** Anglia 1-piece) was no slouch either. They won more than their share and were often the Mid-Eastern Drag News TOP DOG in the gas cl***es.

Note how they drove the truck up onto the berm to make the ramps shallower.

G***er enthusiasts take note of the low back/nose up stance, stock a-arm suspensions and m***ive pie-crusts! Notice also how high the fender cuts go. (Cars are accelerating so the nose-high look is exaggerated a little.)

This photo would make an awesome garage poster. I'm thinking at least four feet wide.

We built a 640 cu. in. engine for a local racer to install in his Vega that had a flex coupling ( braided stainless) in the steering shaft. He took the car up to Ed Quay for some ch***is work and Ed told him "Don't bother taking it off the trailer, I'm not working on that thing!"
