    from so cal

Born in New Jersey and the family moved here when I was 5 in '51. other than 2 years away when I got drafted in '67, it's been home.

Been to a lot of pretty places around this beautiful country we call home, but So Cal will always be home. Just took root here and like it too much to leave, but I will admit that the political leanings out here are a bit of a painintheass. Guess I developed some redneck traits as I aged and all of these "left coast liberals" don't make any sense to me.

  2. I was standing back till you hit my button! IN-N-OUT!! Damn!!!

I was born in Torrance in 1942. lived on the beach, Santa Monica and Redondo till the folks bought a place in Azusa in 1949. it was all orange groves and a nice place to run wild as a kid. had a horse, a BB gun and a 20 gauge shot gun to hunt jack rabbits.

moved to Pasadena in 53 still a nice place to live. still ran wild, maybe to wild. moved to Eagle Rock to help my aunt with my dying uncle in 57, then back to Pasadena in 59. steet racing and beer seemed to go together! Navy from 60-64. 60-62 San Diego, Memphis, Guam. 62-64 stationed in San Diego. Tiajuana drinking on week nights. home to Pasadena drinking on weekends, do you see a pattern here?

married 65, 3 kids, divorced in 75. moved to Boise Idaho in 76.in 84 moved back to Calif (Santa Monica, Pismo, Santa Maria) then to Portland Oregon in 90. the only reason I go back to Calif is my craving for an IN-N-OUT BURGER. and yes make it a double double with a vanilla shake and fries.

did I mention when I moved to Pasadena. I was near Oak and Villa streets. 3 blocks from one of the original 3 IN-N-OUTS? My memories of the good old days fade real fast after 3-4 days in San Gabriel / Eagle Rock areas on trips south. the burgers taste the same (not the fries I miss the grease that they can't sell to the public anymore)

I was born and raised on the central coast, Pismo Beach area. I miss the ocean, surfing, in-n-out, clam chowder, and the weather most of all. It's 10 below right now and I'm wishing I never left and don't know if I'll ever be able to make it back.

  4. Born in LA in 43. Lived in the San Gabriel area mostly. Went in the Army in 61. Came back from Viet Nam in 65 to a year of recruiting duty in Anaheim. Could already sense the changes going on. Came back as a civilian in 76 and worked for a year in the Riverside area. More change, more people, more hussle. And my Mom's neighborhood was already transitioning to Chinese. Nothing felt right anymore. Left for New Mexico and watched Albuquerque go the same way. Then Arkansas, Miami (not good), Illinois, and now I am back min Arkansas and retired.

I think that if I stayed in LA I would have changed with the times. But visiting over time I really saw the changes and they were in a direction that I did not want to take.

Live on 3 acres here. Nice shop. Pool. Lots of good car cronies. It's not bad bat all. Except for the fact that this is apparently one of our two weeks per year of biting cold and slick roads.

Almost everyone my age here has worked in California and/or Michigan at one time. Some stayed but most came home.

Born and raised in So. Cal. Left in July of '90 to Columbus, OH, now in Cincinnati. . Used to visit my folks, but they moved to N. C. (makes visiting easier now!)

So. Cal was the absolute best place to grow up (late '60's-70's) but I can't imagine being able to afford raising 4 children out there now...the house I grew up in was built in the late '50's, 4 bedroom, nothing special. In 2005, sold for $480,000!!!! Gimme a break!

Cincy is cold and ugly during the winter, hot and ugly in the summer, but my wife's family is nearby and can't see me making her leave her family.

The plus side to Cincinnati: 2 hours to the Street Rod Nat's in Louisville and Goodguys Indy and 1 1/2 hour to Goodguys Columbus.

For all you burger lovin guys you NEED to visit the metro Detroit area. There is a place for burgers here that was rated by GQ magazine as one of the top 10 spots for a burger in the whole country. Sidetrack Bar and Grill. THEE best burger I have ever had and a great atmosphere. You come visit, I'll take you there. You'll never talk about In & Out burgers again.:D

I dont miss In N Out as much as I miss Rosa Marias from the San Berdo, Highland, Redlands area.

  14. I DON'T THINK SO!!!!! IN-N-OUT may not be the best burger in the world, but there is nothing else like it.

Just like you're cookies! I never did thank you. THANKS FOR THE COOKIES DENISE!! it was a total surprise when they arrived out of the blue. I opened the package and said "wow! so many cookies. they will be stale before I can eat all these" uhuh! they lasted 1 day, gone, I couldn't believe I ate the whole thing
    Jim

MAZOOMA you're an ass!! it's gonna cost me 2 grand for the trip to Pasadena for a cheeseburger. I wish I'd never seen this post. the roads are real bad this time of year maybe I should fly and rent a car from Burbank....Jim

I really cant afford to live here. If you weren't here before the tech boom and you don't have a high paying job, you pretty much can't afford a decent home within reasonable driving distance to work. I barely make rent. On my income I'd have a mansion about anywhere else. I plan on moving to Arizona eventually and become a desert rat. Starta BBQ joint. Build a pole barn.

Plus the foggy air eats my cars up, and I rarely can ride my motorcycle without a jacket.

INSTEAD spend $400 for a plane ticket to Detroit, I'll pick you up at the airport and take you for a burger, fries and a beer. Afterwards cookies for dessert. I promise you will never craver any other burger....I think they put crack in their meat patties. :D

  17. Born in Albuquerque, NM in 1951, moved to Escondido (North San Diego County) in 1954... lived there until 2 years after high school graduation (1971), wandered around, moved back in 1980, just moved to the Northern CA Coast in 2005. Due to the then-crazy San Diego Real Estate prices, we were able to sell our kinda crackerbox, kinda cheezy, 3bed/1 bath home in Escondido, pay off the loan, and pay cash for a 2,400 square foot,4 bedrom/3bath brand-new, ocean view home. Now all I have to deal with is the yearly property taxes.

Grew up in Camarillo, then Port Hueneme, then Oxnard, across the alley from Oxnard Service Center, which sponsered some really cool Drag Cars. We torn those towns up on our Stingrays when we were young in the 70's. Saw my first DragRace at Oxnard Air Force Base(Ventura County Drags-Camarillo airport now). Surfed from Santa Monica to Santa Barbara and Cruzed Main in Ventura. Dirt Biked in the Santa Paula riverbottom from Wagon Wheel to Indian Dunes. great Memories. But now, when I visit that area, I'm a fish outta water. I prefer the slower life. B

  19. Born and raised in Calif . Lived most of my 61 years there but everything got totally out of hand , crowded and phenomenally expensive . Now I live in New Mexico . Greatest place ever . Stunning beauty , nice people , reasonable living costs . I do have to kick the deer , antelope and elk off the road when I'm riding my bike ( not kidding) but hey , no place is perfect .

Move to So Cal in 73 because it would get me to Hot Rod Heaven. Moved back to the midwest a couple of times, went back to So Cal each time.

Now I want to leave again. I'm too old for the traffic, I want more space. I was able to race on canyon/mountain roads anytime I wanted for several years before it became so crowded.

If you are young, (or young at heart) you can have the time of your life. Hot Rods, beach, El Mirage, Bonneville, Pomona, etc. You can drive/work on your rod just about 365 days a year.

I've been here, next to Pasadena for all of my 58 years. There's lots to like and dislike about anywhere in the world, but this is home for me.
I would never be able to adapt to cold, rain and snow at this stage of life.
Now that I'm retired, I no longer have to fight traffic every day and we are fortunate to live in the safest city in L.A. County. (Last murder was over 20 years ago). We can be in the mountains in 15 minutes or at the beach in 60.
But, today is bright, clear blue skies and in the temperature is in the high 50's, so I gotta hop in the '34 and get some lunch...hmmmm, decisions, decisions....:)

Born and raised in Calexico, moved to El Cajon in early 80's, then got the heck out of there and moved to Texas in 94. I miss my buds and the beach, the rest you can have!!!

  24. Moved out here in '83 from Fort Wayne, Indiana...blown away by the car scene...but Slimegreeeen is right...raising kids here leaves something to be desired and gangs are everywhere here even in my sleepy little town north of San Diego...property taxes are a killer...real estate is crazy...so we are trying (with no luck) to move to North Carolina...may have to sell the house we bought back there and wait it out for awhile...I also wanted my kids to be able to graduate from college and be able to find a house that they could afford...even if I could give them 100K towards a house out here when they graduate it would barely put a dent in their purchase price...California is a great place to be when you are single or a young couple or very well off...

Born in and never lived outside of Los Angeles County.
I remember bean and barley fields where the 405 freeway is now and dairys and Orange groves all the way from Long Beach to Knott's Berry Farm, which was free admission to the "ghost town".
I think it would still be a great place to live if all the people who were NOT born here in California would GO HOME!

(Parent's of people born here excepted.)

Yep me too.. Born and reised there.. Bellflower/Lakewood area.
relocated the company I work for to Denver in 87. did a lot of street racing in Downy where they tore out all the houses. now there's another
freeway ( 105 or what ever they call it ) cruised Whitter blvd. when
it used to happen. Bellflower blvd. was dying at that time. watched all the tracks close near by. exwife's grandfather incorperated Adelanto like in the 40's. last gas pump befor El Mirage, spent lots time there offroading.
off the 5 freeway behind the Nabisco plant was drag strip, Beach blvd. or Shoemaker. was just out there over turkey day...what a crowd..
traffic everywhere...... did make it to the Long Beach swap meet.
was at Bob's Big Boy in Burbank on Fri. night too.. aahhhh old times,
here, yesterday 18 below... garage has a heater though. and we have all winter to get'm ready for summer.
