The PAUL KOLLSTEDT story is a GOOD ONE!!

Paul lived in Hamilton, Ohio (of coarse) which is on the north side of Cincy. I had a shop there for about 4 years. Nick named "Hamiltucky" or "Hamilbama" for it's Interesting array of people, Paul must have fit right in as you will read...
The style Rear end above is considered his "middle years" ones. The really earlly ones are blank and sometimes have the name Stamped in them with simple letter stamps. Paul built A LOT of rear ends over the years, his later rear end have only a "K" in them and look newer.
Now for the WILD part.. After years of building rearends, (80's) an Elderly Paul moved on to fixing lawnmowers and selling them in front of his house, on his lawn. By then, the nieghborhood had made a turn for the worse and the local "thugs" decided to start steeling "old man Kollstedt's" lawnmowers and sell them in the surrounding nieghborhoods..
Well, one day two kids took off with a mower and Paul just happened to see them do it. Paul grabbed his pistol and gave chase. He fired at the kids (Iv'e heard they were in there early teens) and actually hit one in the leg dropping the teen to the ground. Then, in front of NUMEROUS witnesses all around, Paul calmly walked up to the kid that was lying in the street and Shot him in the head killing him.
Paul, was arrested and the trail took a while as they always do. During that time, Pauls health went to shit, and by the time he was sentenced he was pretty much already dead.

I don't know if he died before he went to jail, or just after.. But that's the "Story" of the KOLLSTEDT rear-ends.

A few of us here in cincy collect them, they turn up occasionally. I think there is half a dozen around here.. <!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

The Spike Jones special: Sponsored by the, then, popular entertainer in the post war hayday of midget racing. Powered by a, one of two, Offy knockoff called the Sampson in which Gorden Schroeder was involved.

Certified by the Court of Appeals for Butler County, No.
    CA92-06-101.
On October 18, 1989, Paul L. Kollstedt shot and killed Robert Hatmaker. Kollstedt was arrested and charged with murder, a violation of R.C. 2903.02. On October 20, 1989, Dr.
Roger H. Fisher, a clinical psychologist, evaluated Kollstedt to determine whether he was competent to stand trial.
Following the evaluation, Fisher reported that Kollstedt suffered from a severely disabling psychotic illness that would render Kollstedt incapable of participating in his defense.
Fisher diagnosed Kollstedt as suffering from "a primary degenerative dementia of the Alzheimer type, senile onset with delirium." However, Fisher concluded that "with proper care and medication Mr. Kollstedt could be restored within a year to a level of psychological functioning at least satisfactory enough to render him competent to stand trial for this offense." On October 24, 1989, the Hamilton Municipal Court determined that Kollstedt was incompetent to stand trial on the charge of murder. Therefore, the court ordered that Kollstedt be placed in the Dayton Mental Health Center, Forensic Unit, for restoration to competency. See R.C. 2945.38(D).
On October 26, 1989, Kollstedt was admitted to the Dayton Mental Health Center. There, Kollstedt was treated by Dr.
Salah M. Samy, a psychiatrist. On February 21, 1990, Kollstedt was transferred from the Dayton facility to the Pauline Warfield Lewis Center in Cincinnati. In May 1990, Dr.
Marguerite Blythe, a psychiatrist, reported that no form of active treatment could restore Kollstedt to mental competency. Thereafter, it appears the murder charge against Kollstedt was dismissed upon a finding that there was no substantial probability Kollstedt would become competent to stand trial. Kollstedt died in 1990 without leaving any written or recorded testimonial evidence concerning the circumstances of the shooting.

The late Bob Caldwell (of Hamilton, Oh) did drive for Paul Kollstedt. His son, Tim Caldwell, usually travels with me to many Sprint Car races.
This photo is of Bob, in the Bob's Trim Shop (Withamsville, Oh) Sprinter/Modified taken at the Lawrenceburg Speedway.

Robert "Bob" G. Caldwell, of Hamilton, Ohio, passed away on Saturday February 2, 2008 at the age of 79 after a long illness. Bob raced locally at tracks like the Cincinnati Race Bowl and the Lawrenceburg Speedway, as well as the Eldora Speedway and the Little 500 at the Anderson Speedway.

  22. A mans lawnmower is a personal thing at times. I once had a somewhat best friend that took my truck, my girlfriends heart, and my riding mower on the promise that he'd mow for money to pay me back. never did----GOT THAT DAMN LAWNMOWER BACK THOUGH.

I'm curious if anyone who watched the midget clip can identify the track?
It appears that MK has his "glove" on when he waves to the crowd, which would make it 1966 or later, kinda hard to tell though.

FYI: The #4 modified/sprint car that Bob Caldwell is shown in, I believe, was owned by Vern Kunkle from somewhere east of Cincinnati, maybe Withamsville? The photo was taken at the 'burg probably around the early sixties. Junior Smalley drove the Kunkle #4 in the late seventies at the 'burg.

Josh, I was the promoter, water truck driver, grader opertator, bill payer, public relations guy, and what ever else it took in the late 70's early 80's. Junior Smalley was a regular in Kunkle's Black #4, Leffler car. Ferkle, Wilkerson, Gaines, Black, Graybeal, Kinsers (more than one). Always a good show. The races I have attended lately at the 'burg are just as good and just as exciting. No wings and dirt - it just doesn't get much better than that.
