I escaped from Alta Loma in 1991. I still go back to visit.

  2. I was born in La Mirada in 86, but moved to riverside in 87, and raised ever since. I only came up here to reno, because that is where my dad is. Its dang cold right now, and is supposed to get to 2 overnight. I miss riverside, where its could be raining and still be 70 degrees out. I cant wait to get back after the holidays

This is really the heart of the matter. As I said in my post earlier, when I arrived there in '69 we would spend almost every weekend at one famous dragstrip or another, and you just can't do that anymore.

SoCal's rep lives on long after the reality of the Beach Boys life style is gone.

Now there are certain stretches of the 405 that are always bumper-to-bumper, not just during "rush hour" but like 10:30 on a Saturday morning.

When I got out of the Navy I got a little apartment on Ingraham Street in Pacific Beach and I would drive over to the ocean and cruise up and down, and I could park right at the edge of the beach anytime. Now that entire stretch is condos and a "promenade" and what little beach parking that remains is always full. But that's okay because from Memorial Day to Labor Day you can't hardly move in any of the beach towns, never mind find a place to park.

The SoCal of legend, of surfing all day and cruisin' Van Nuys at night, and spending Sundays at "Drag City" is gone, never to return.

Now it's traffic tie-ups, police helicopters, gangs, high rents, higher fees and taxes, and Spanish more than English.

I'm glad I got to live there while I did, but now I'm glad I'm gone.

  4. I did most of my growing up in the Bay Area.
Went back and lived there off and on in the 70s and 80s.

Now I'm here. Ya just live where ya are I guess.

I see threads like this all the time on the HAMB...and I can't relate to any of it. I don't know anything about cold, snow or salt on the roads...
I have experienced humidity, and I have found that it's about the most uncomfortable thing I've ever felt. I can't imagine living with it.
Some of the snow is pretty, I guess, but I wouldn't want to make an expedition out of going to the market.
Home is where you are happy. and where your friends are. Wherever it is, wherever you find that, well, that's home.
Life is so short that all that matters is that your home, your city and your neighborhood is of your own chosing.
My city is very safe, the weather is perfect and its been home all my life. Most importantly, its where my friends are.

I was born in the naval Hospital at Camp Pendalton and grew up near San Jose in a town called Los Gatos. I moved to Phoenix 13 years ago because of a good job opprotunity and that I could actually afford to buy a house here.

California is a beautiful state, but it's too bloddy expernsive to live there these days. I do miss it though, especially the ocean, but hey, it's only 6 hours to get to the surf from where I am now.

Was born in Valencia, grew up in both SFV and OC (huntington beach) after parents divorced and I bounced back and forth....

Step dad got me into hot rodding real early on and my real father was a vintage porsche nut, so I got the gearhead thing going early on from both sides when I was around 2yrs old :D

Lived in Burbank until late 97 then moved to Reno, then Norcal, then Vegas

Sure miss the Socal cars and the beach but Im close enough now I can always visit since I cant afford to live there :D

So much more to Calif. than just So. Cal. All big cities have congestion. Been lots of places, but lived here my whole life. Dont think I'll ever leave. Its such a diverse state with beachs, mtns., deserts, lakes, you name it. Definately expensive and for the most part takes to good incomes to own a house. Besides, the mexican food makes up for all its downfalls!

  11. my family moved to Cali in 1850 and to San Diego in 1870...been here longer than most of the "natives". I moved to the Bay about 10 years ago, eventually I may go back to SD, but it is so crowded.

Born in Lindsay '54, then lived in Visalia, Hanford and Fontana. Started High School in Oxnard then moved to Shell Beach (Pismo) where my single Mom bought a beach house in 1969 for 17,000. (sold in '93 for 600K) In 1971 she rented the house out and moved to Bakersfield for "love".

Same year I bought a tri-power GTO. I terrorized Chester Ave and made a few trips down the track at Famoso. My Mom's "love" and I couldn't get along and he kicked me out, so the summer of '72 I drove to my Dad's in Portland, OR. to finish high school. That winter was a climate shock for a native Calif kid who didn't even own a coat.

Got married late '73, went on vacation to Socal in spring '75. Visited Borrego Springs and was living there within 3 months. Lived there for 15 years until home building dried up.

Back to Oregon in '90-91 so my wife could spend more time with her elderly Mom and I discovered I hate it here. As soon as Mom passes "WE'LL BE BACK" probably to the Arroyo Grande, Grover Beach, Santa Maria area. Gotta love those "Tri-Tip" sandwiches.

What I miss most is the sunshine...
Gray skies 6 months out of the year gets depressing.
Right now it's 26* and starting to snow again.

Grew up in So Cal (Simi Valley). Graduated from high school in 1970, went away to school, and haven't lived there since, although my folks still live in the same house (for almost 50 years).

Born in Los Angeles, we moved to Tijuana when I was very young and moved to San Diego in 1976. I have had the chance to travel around the country and enjoy other towns, but I'll tell ya, there is nothing like flying home and seeing the Coronado Bay bridge and Balboa Park as the you feel the thunk of the landing gear come down! Home!

My biggest gripe are the transplants that bitch and moan about my town. Its too crowded, too expensive, you don't have the four seasons, yada , yada, yada! Well, go home! If it is so fucking bad here, go back to the snow, the out of control heat of Phoenix! Take your pasty ass home!

And Tommy Burgers sucks ass! Who the fuck thought of ruining a perfectly good burger with shitty tasting chili? Really!

Well, for all of you escapees, I will have an IN-N-OUT burger for you today and maybe head down to the beach later and check out the waves with a hot cup of coffee. Maybe have a bite a Kono's next to the Chrystal Pier!

I lived in both Ventura and Sunnyvale back in the '80s and left due to the cost of living. We simply could not raise a family on just one salary. (Stupid me I was trying to create a "traditional family")

Born in Ventura, raised mostly in Camarillo. My parents moved me to Santa Maria when I was 16 and I'm still here. The culture shock from Ventura to Santa Maria was bad enough. All these damn raised up trucks and cowboy boots. Everybody told me... Pismo Beach is only 15 minutes up the road.. Yea, it is, but.... The water is like low 50's and my normal Ventura summer suit didn't quite work out too well. I couldn't handle it back east. Went to Georgia years ago, and ordered an iced tea. This dumb ass Californian about spit it accross the resturant. I had NO CLUE what sweet tea was, until I got it that day and took a big swig of it.. Wont fall for that trick again.. This damn thread has made me hungry. In & Out is right down the street, anybody want anything??????

Lived in so.Cal in my younger days. Grew up around Van Nuys area. Moved out and lived in Alhambra, El Monte and then Burbank. Did the usual cars and girls thing and then took my racing to the strips. Got hooked on drag racing and did it for about about 12 years. Built/raced each car, going a bit faster with each one.

Raced at many of the old strips, that are now gone. Some of the old great ones, like Lions, Irwindale, OCIR, Ontario and Fremont, along with Pomona, Fontana and the March Meet at the Patch. Probably forgetting some, but you get the idea.

Did my racing from around 1967 to 1978 and sold everything in 78 and moved to Reno. Things were a lot cheaper here and I was able to get into business and make a decent living too.

So. Cal in the 50's, 60's and early 70's were great times, with lots of racing and cars stuff to do, but between the smog and traffic, along with high home prices, it was time to go. Got more house and a better chance at having my own business up here too.

We miss the old days down there and many of the friends we made, but it was a good move for us. Things just aren't the same there now. Not knocking it, just different now. Of course, I'm not 35 any more either.:p

I consider myself lucky to have lived there, during those great years/times. Oh ya, we have In and out's up here too.:D

Born in Indianapolis, folks moved to CA in '59. Lived in Westwood near UCLA for a year and then Studio City. North Hollywood High (same class as Marcia Brady and Pugsley Addams), Van Nuys Blvd, Mulholland Dr. (racing not necking). First place on my own was 1/2 block off Van Nuys Blvd. where the Jack-In-The-Box is. Then got married and moved to Redondo Beach. Been there since '84. Love the So. Bay. Don't like the cost and the crowds but it's what you put up with to live here. If I make it to retirement we will likely move out of state, but that's a long way off.
