The 1921 Alaska is the most valuable vintage plate in the U.S. There are only four known to exist. The plate is the first issued by the territory of Alaska, decades before it attained statehood. Back then, transporting an automobile to Alaska was extremely difficult; once a car arrived, there were barely any roads to drive it on. The last sale of a 1921 Alaska plate occurred in 2000 in a Wendy's parking lot in Biddeford, Maine

A license plate with the number 6 sold this year in Delaware for over $600,000. And many Delaware plates have sold for over the most expensive plate in this article.

I've got a few plates that are keepers, and I do buy and sell ones I find, great dollar to weight ratio. There was a barn that I found that was shingled with unissued New York plates. Owner must have gone to the DMV at the end of the year to collect them. Nicely attached in numerical order late teens to late 1930's, none were worth saving.

  6. I don't know about those cardboard plates that divco13 is talking about. Sounds like they would make very crap-py patch panels.

Cool old car knowledge, but some people have too much money. Higher taxes for the rich looks better all the time.

  9. Take a look at arizona plates for 32, 33, 34 which are solid copper and I have seen match set of 32 plates in perfect shape for well over 600.00. 600,000 for just a plate is just stupid.

I got a full set of 1936 plates for every US State including Alaska and every Canadian State except the North West Territories, plus 1939 Mexico and 1936 Philppines.
Just picked a year and started collecting.
I met a guy from VT who had the biggest VT plate collection in the country and I would not be surprised if he had one of the biggest plate collections full stop.
It was fun collecting and I met a few nice folks I would not usually have come across.

In North Dakota plates were issued by cities first the later on by the state.

Anyone looking for Aussy plates? They belong to the government so they have to be handed in when the rego runs out. Have two Victorian ones that um..... found there way into my possession.

During my rowdy youth I was lucky to not be in the license plate making business. But these days ours are not prison made and are thin aluminum screen printed pieces, maybe cost effective but not as cool as the old raised letter/number plates. Making them in prison was found to interrupt to many t.v. shows the boys like to watch. It ain't easy being sleasy!! That does seem like a lot-o-dough for a license plate!!~Sololobo~

MD has been on the sticker system for at least 30 years. I think they switched over sometime in the seventies. When you get a new car, you have the option to take the tag with you or get a new one (unless you are switching vehicle classes, then you get a new one no matter what).

Where is MD did you grow up?

I know a guy that deals in plates and some of the prices are just stupid. $600K is VERY stupid. I can think of a lot of other things to do with that kind of money.

In some areas low numbered plates offer weird privledge. I once happened to be in the DMV on the first issue day of a special plate and got a low 2 digit number. Which was then affixed to an unmarked police car that had just left fleet. That car was waved out of traffic and granted special parking or right-of-way dozens of times. Wasn't until a parking lot attendant commented on the tag (after moving cones to give us a VIP spot) that it all came together.

If I was a kazillionaire living in a high traffic environment, a low number on the limo tag might go a long ways. Doesn't suprise me they trade for that kind of money

In delaware plates are issued to the vehicle however if you have a low number plate you can transfer it to anothe vehicle. All the fools who have to much money want low numbers starting with 4 as 1 2 and 3 are reserve for th gov. lt. gov. and sec of state. You can now use any plate on any vehicle as befor a type of vehicle required a type of plate such a CXXXXwas for pick up or comerical, RV was you guesed it and T was again Trailer. If you own a number below a certian number you can run and old style black and white or black and stainless. I have a 1931 large del plate that I found nailed over a hole in an old store building. I also have a 1957 WV plate. I also have a number of mini plates like you used to see a motor V on a display board from each state. I belive they are from the 1950s If I ever learn to post pic I will put them up. They are right about the thousands of dollars people pay for low numbers. When I licened my 71 olds convt one of the grils at MV got me a five numbe plate that can be black and white and it was just the cost of the tag. I see them in the paper for 12 to 1500.00

Was driving somewhere on the interstate one day some years back and I passed a big Caddy being driven by an older guy. The NYS tag on the car said "Congressional Medal of Honor".

My first thought was "damn, that guy is a hero, I wonder what he did to earn that honor".

My second thought was that there was not a cop in the country that would pull him over. Nor should he.

Wonder if motorcycle plates are included? I have a 1943 Minn cycle plate. War years should be harder to get also, I would think.

  29. Carps sent me a Northwest Territories plate a few years back. took him some time to come up with it now I know why. Its still stashed away from my last move but will soon once again get a special display spot.
