I was at Irwindale when this happened (I was 12 or 13 yrs old) , if I remember right guys used to hop the fence after a crash and grab pieces that broke off for souvenirs.

I saw a drunk guy pick up Shirley Muldowney's blower pulley at Fremont, New Year's day 1980, after she threw the belt in the final against Garlits (pretty sure it was BD). The drunk walks across the return road (east side of track) and picks up the pulley within seconds of it coming to rest in the grass on our side of the rail. It must have been pretty hot because drunk guy let out a yelp and dropped it right away. The crowd in the stands had been listening for an hour to this guy wail about wanting to see Shirley Muldowney in the final and when he burned his hand on the hot pulley the crowd roared. Then the jet cars came out and blew several 4x8 plywood sheets off the pit wall behind the burnout box, but that's another story.

I see that you have Petersen's 1957 Drag Racing Pictorial too--a great read.

The Meyers Manx "Purple Potato Chip". Corvair powered with straight axle front end from the late 60's. Kicked ass Saturday nights at Lions, Changed the tires to paddles and kicked ass again at the Sand drags on Sunday.
