Yes, Vintage Oval Racing Magazine has a nice classified section and most people interested in buying cars like this are probably subscribers.

    http://www.vintageovalracing.com/

Also, some dealers advertise in that magazine too. You could send the photos to them and get a ball-park value. Also, a good auto appraiser should be able to put a number on it too.

Re: Dirt Track Sprint Car for sale.

There's a guy coming in the morning to check it out. He's thinking $18K but I know my Dad paid more than that BEFORE the ground-up restoration! Dad was a perfectionist and a life-long Ford mechanic. He worked at a Lincoln garage when I was born and had to sell his Vincent Black Shadow when I came along! The least I can do is get a good price for the car that was his life-long dream!
I'm thinking somebody out there would give a whole lot more but he's driving 160 miles so I need to sound like I know what I'm talking about when I ask for more. Any ideas about that price? Don't want to hold out too long 'cause Mom needs the money.

That was one of, if not my favorite car of the museum when I was fortunate enough to visit in 2007. The blue and red together, I love it.

The Don Edmonds black Offy was owned by the late George Tatnell, father of Brooke who racers Sprint Cars in the USA and Australia. It is a real unique piece, from memory it was raced on the dirt by someone in South Australia before it was acquired by George. I guess the family still owns it.

Seems like if he's throwing around $18,000....$25,000 wouldn't be out of the question.

There is a 1932 Abbott Sprint car currently advertised in Vintage Oval....similar to yours. Asking price is $40,000 (but it has been in there a few months now)

    Some dealers:
    Symbolic Motor Car Co. 858-350-5846

Fausel Motor Sports 760-564-4343 or 760-449-1744

Bonhams & Butterfields auctioneers and appraisers 415-503-3353 or 212-461-6515

Also, perhaps calling some museums might provide some insight.
Speedway Motors has an extensive racing museum and so does Darlington Speedway.

GOOD LUCK, your Dad had quite a nice car!

Actually, looking at the pix, that is the number that first came to to my mind, also........... If you have some old pix of the car "in action" and other historical documentation of the cars activities, drivers, tracks, etc, it, certainly, helps the value.

  14. Normally I go for cars from later eras, but this car is timeless cool! It could be covered in rust and still knock me out with THOSE LINES. If I were to do a car from this era, I would have this close at hand for an idea to pattern after. JMO

Brian, thanks. The Horn car was way past being competitive when i raced it, but still a good place to start.
mac, thanks also; i do have some more pics; i will post them as soon as i locate them.
The Hillegas car was the best handling car i ever drove! It even worked great on blacktop; i drove it three times in the Supermodified races on the 3/4 mile track at Pocono in 1969. Even managed to beat out Bentley once!

Spike..Most forgot about that pocono 3/4 mile. I towed our midget out there in 74 when they had a race called the race of champions. It was the first attempt at the iroc format. But in this case, they had 12 drivers in midgets and sprints in pocono. Then the same guys in taxis and champ cars, I think in phoenix. It was a great show..Foyt, Pancho, Unser, Rutherford...Jimmy C...pretty much all the indy car stars at the time. They only did it once that I remember. Pancho won the midget end and AJ won the sprint end in his own white 11 that he ran about that time. I think it became the longhorn car that Jan ran later. It might still be around the indy museum. I might need confirmation from Rootie or Mr. Miller since they are most likely more up on history than me.

Ziggy Snider built and drove the 11 car with A.J. at the wheel at times, and most famously, at his "comeback" at the Indiana fairgrounds in 74. It was then sold to Bobby Hillin (Longhorn) who put Bubby Jones, Opp. and others in the seat. Hillin had the car restored to original and donated it to the Indy museum in 77.

    Hey brian
with as many cars that you have you need to start another one LOL, my friend Bobby Brummett just called and told me that Johnny Sawyer died yesterday, for those of you that didn't know of him he was from Tulsa and raced midgets in the 40's and early 50's even raced in the East some and was a real shoe

Rootie..I knew you would come through. I always liked that car, the lines especially. It was a throwback in a way since it was a competitve springer when 4 bars were taking over. I watched AJ run at the Hulman, Indy fairgrounds, and pocono over that span. Pretty sure it was all in the same car. Seems like he won most of races he ran. I actually think he won them all but I could be mistaken. Seems like Bubby ran for them right before the Siebert Olds ride....correct ?

I agree, thats pretty much the quintessental caged sprint car. Jones won several features in 77 with that car and, I believe, was the last to drive it before it was retired. Foyt wining the twin 50s against the "kids" at the fairgrounds "to relax" before the 500 is what makes A.J. the ledgend he is.

If I remember right Jimmy ran second in both the midget and sprint car portions of that series, oh and it was common knowledge Foyt's engine was to big in the sprinter that day

The only historical info I have on the car is that a driver named Rozie Russel used to own it. Dad bought it from a guy named Niles Reed. You people are really bringing back memories. I'll have to pull out all MY old Hot Rod mags. Can I scan and share from mags if I find something truly drool-worthy? How about other sites?

Certainly, scan away. Here's a site with a link to bunch of pics of Rosie Roussel's cars.

Hey, heres one I have the info on, Ed Darryl's #12 is Jan Opperman, the #22 is I can't remember (old age) at Trenton USAC/ARDC show in '72. IIRC Bigalow won the race, and Jan was as exciting to watch on the big parking lot as he was on dirt!
