There are yards like that everywhere, and some are very stubborn about selling but ALL will sell, the only thing is most of the time the right price is way more than the junk is worth. So many of these owners have had people take advantage of them by either stealing from them or just lying about values, that alot of them just would rather it sit there and rot away and see people cry about it, it is their way of "getting even". If any of you have visited our site you know I have seen it many times. Jim www.carsinbarns.com

What phone are you using for pictures? Did all the others in the background know that this was a secret spot too?

Agreed. Even for uh-hi-uh those have deteriorated greatly. Still some eyebrow raising possibilities.

I know where that is.....that guy at one time would let people in there to buy stuff....I'm sure you remember that. In fact I still have a few things in my garage from years ago, that I bought from that guy. Last time I stopped in I asked if that 57 Chevy Sedan Delivery, and the Cuda where still back there,he said "Yep"..... but they would not let us in.
First time I was back there was in the mid 80's, have not been back in the yard since 90 or 91. What a shame.

    You guys don't get it.

This guy doesn't need to sell YOU a damn thing if he doesn't want to. You all sound like a bunch of bitchy house wives complaining about all the junk in YOUR garages. "why do you have all that, if your not going to do anything with it, you don't need all those cars and pieces, how many cars can drive at on time"
The owner had the vision to buy up these cars when others thought they were junk. Notice how most of the old cars are NOT crashed. He bought them, lined them up and can watch the things rust away for the rest of his life if he wants.
He is VERY well off, ($) He is not a dick. In fact, he has a slew of VERY nice steel 32, 33, and 34 ford Street rods. He knows whats rusting away out there.. and no "Cash flashin" Old car "Expert" is gonna talk him into sellin anything he doesn't want to.

You guys need to think about this..

If every old timer thought like you guys, "everything has a price, sell sell sell, He's never gonna do anything with all those cars, get rid of them"
There would be NO old car stashes, no barn finds, no junk yards.

yeah, crush them all.. that would be great.

    ----------------

Oh, and if all ohio cars are rusty junk.. quit comming here and buying them all. Every car my buddy's and I build, sells to someone out west. Cali, Arizona, Ok, Utah.. ????

    Thanks for posting the pics.

You are correct the owner doesn't have to sell if he doesn't want to.
If he wants to watch what he owns rot that is his business.
As long as he remembers that if and when the EPA tree hugging types come a knockin those rust buckets are no longer gonna be of any interest to anyone.
I'd say his vision has already turned to junk.

There's one like that North of Dayton off US40.
to get in you need to Spit and Hunker a few times with the guy.
Then you get to go look - after several of those he'll tell you to go get what you need (parts) and will start talkin about selling a car or two.
Haven't been there in 20 Years. still there - googled it a few weeks back.

Josh, you are right- but it's still sad to see stuff in that condition for sale or not. I would give anything for a '57 Sedan Delivery. That one is totally unsavable and probably was a nice car when parked. Don't care what the case is- just sad to see it go. Jim

The guy may do what he wants to; but I think it is a shame to see the shit rust away and not let anybody touch it. Obviously, the guy has some sort of hoarding issue. I have the same issue; but when the shit starts sitting outside and 'going to hell'; it is time to sell it, junk it or part it out. I have 15 cars. All of them sit inside except for two daily drivers because I live in the midwest.

I have seen this scenario in the midwest a 100 times. Some idiot has money, buys something, and lets it sit and go to hell.

My Dad has the same 'hoarding issue' with tri-five chevys and 32-36 fords. He keeps the 3-window coupes and '57 convertibles inside; but all of the other shit goes to hell outside. I have seen my Dad let some nice 'less desirable' cars go to hell just because he doesn't have inside storage. I know he still has a '57 nomad and a '34 roadster shell sitting outside since 1985. The cars were actually buildable at one time, but now they are rusted to the door handles. He let all of the 2-door posts and sedans sit outside and go to hell too.

    Just my opinion....

The top half is all you need to build a 34. It's harder, but it could be built

Thanks for the pics. I've got quite a few old cars stashed, and I can understand how guys end up saying "nothing is for sale, period." Most of the ones I have are deals that were too good to pass, future projects, or parts carts for other ones i have. Then, word gets around that you have a bunch of old tin, and all of sudden people are dropping by, calling incessantly... you try to help them out, then they want to bitch at you charging $20 for something that took 3 hours to pull. After a while you just say screw it, nothing is for sale... unless you see it on my trailer at a swap.

You hit the nail on the head... My dad's yard is the same way. We finally put 6' stockade fence completely around the perimeter. A guy came over a was so beligerant to my dad for not wanting to sell his 55 Crown Vic that they actually got into a fist fight. Fence went up 3 days later. And yep, he's got a couple of good ones slowly going downhill, mainly the Nomad. See my profile pics...

Are they gonna be sold? Eventually, someday but not in the condition they are in now. The difference between the typical guy with a pile of stuff like that and myself & my dad is that we have all the stuff to redo the cars we have. New sheetmetal in the loft in the garage. All the new chrome is in closets in the house or under a bed. One at a time...

That 69' Firebird has some parts I could use for one of mine. That headlight plastic looked good. Console & shifter(or better yet, factory bench?), etc...

    Neat pics, thanks for sharing.

He may be hoarding, but at this point they'd already be gone if he hadn't.

Junkyarding is a fickle business. It's not just HAMBy car guys that come knocking. There's some real dipshits out there with the opinion that you should give them a great deal since they "need" what you're "throwing away".

I wouldn't blame somebody for building a fence. Not one bit. Let the grandkids part em out later if they want a lesson on human nature when money's involved.

Im the oppisite I guess when I relized I was not going to build the 4 46-47 ford trucks I was holding for years I gave them away to someone who would do some thing with them. It doesnt hurt that I gave them to the local scrap metal guy as he wanted to build a vintage truck and I get first dibs on anything he brings home at scrap price -the value of the trucks. NO money just good friends.

Sounds like somebody's afraid of a challenge. Those are very do-able, just a little more work. It's a damn shame to see these sitting and rotting because someone is a crazy hoarder. :( People could be loving and driving these...

    Thanks for the pics Josh!

I would rather spend a day at any cool junkyard or auction than at a car show somewhere. It's the thrill of the hunt.....

Yup, thanks for the pics, I posted some pics from a trip to a private yard in Southern Kentucky last year, even the stuff that looked salvageable was so soft it would disenigrate if you tried to move it, cool to look at though.

I feel for the guys looking at these pics who are searching for that hard to find trim peice or body part. But what's funny about some of the commentary here regarding not selling stuff, I'm sure if the guy started selling out parts at reasonable prices tomorrow a lot of it would end up on Ebay the next day.

On one hand you have to hand it to the guy for saving all those cars, on the other hand he should seek professional help for not protecting them from the elements. It seems to me he has a greed problem, Me, Me I want it , you can't have it. We are only custodians of items, we will die then they go to someone else. In this case to the crusher or into the ground. Shame on him for not protecting his hoard.

more than "just a little more work",,you'll spend alot of money trying to bring some of those back..Where if you looked around you could find something in better shape..Also far to many people find "that car" and grab it ,,only to down the line find out its a HUGE undertaking ..get discouraged and give up on it. If say that Cuda were a Hemi then yeah or something like that..most of the rest,,pray it gets on a rollback in one piece and when you see the underside maybe you still have a frame,,there is a difference between hard work and wasting time and money

  29. Old yards are just PLAIN COOL! Most of the older owners say nothings for sale because they know they are going to get brow beaten. A good example is my now friend who owns a yard close in 1980. I stopped by on a tip and asked about Studebakers. He said he didnt have any, didnt want to give me the time of day. But after talking with him, about the old days, he finally took a walk with me thru the yard. First thing I saw was an Edsel wagon, the 2 Studes...I kinda chuckled and said, "Hey you said you didnt have any Studees". He laughed back and said thats cause I figured you for some "snot nosed punk". When we got to the 63 Wildcat(a 4 gear car no less) and went to raise the hood the hinges were tight. I didnt mess with it, told hin, Id come back with some WD-40 later, as I didnt want to bend the hood. He then toild me thats the reason he closed the yard, couldnt deal with A-- Holes coming in ang F'ning the parts up by jerking open hoods and doors.
Every since then, we are like best buds! He is a little high on his prices, but he knows its stuff you cant get around the corner....so what do you do.....you either say Ill take it, or you say No Thanks.....I ususally play the buffer or middle man, cause I dont want some "snot nosed kid" screwing up the relationship I have developed...

As already stated its his junk and if he doesnt want to sell it, so be it......But a little sugar talking goes along way...he saved this stuff for a reason, show him the respect he deserves and that you care as much about his treasures as he does, and maybe he might cut a few loose......but dont insult the man, hes obviously had that done in the past and thats probably what gave him his NOT FOR SALE attitude. IMHO

I find it depressing to see so many cars rusting away until not one part is worth anything. I guess we have all run across this. I know I have. A guy has a yard full of old cars you have watched for years rust away but he refuses to part with any of them. I just don’t get it. If he is hanging on to them for the value he is losing that every day. I have even talked to folks like this, not even trying to buy, but getting the old iron moved out of the weather but to no avail. I have several parts cars in my yard and the whole car and/or parts are for sale to anyone with a need. I have sold parts off of them right here on the HAMB and never tried to gouge anyone. I have also swapped parts which is the way to go! I probably have given away more parts than sold but to me helping out a fellow car guy is what it is all about. I also take to heart trying to save these old cars because as time goes on they are fewer, fewer of them left. I guess everyone has the right to do what they want but I find it hard to believe this is a car guy. I think we all have some obligation to at least try to save these old cars. I would rather see the cars go anywhere other than rusting away. I guess I just don’t get it and never will.
