First issue I've read. Here in Kansas City, it's carried by nearly all the big bookstores and newsstands. And, judging by the amount of copies on the shelf, it's pretty popular. The response to "Scott" locked the mag in as one I'll be reading regularly.

  4. this is a straight up hot rod magazine, and props for doing what He feels is right.Think about this: Most guys my age (50) got alot of what we know about this from our high school libary,I still have some of those books (dont ask) and read hot rod every month there so if it had a bunch of crap in it the schools wold never let it in.just a thought, the only two mags that did have ALOT of T&A were Autobuff and the early American Rodder and look where they are now, yeah I have every copy of Autobuff in the binder but Im kinda a twisted guy from the start. and now a question.......is this just a east coast rag????

no, its a Midwest mag! not that john doesn't plan on moving outward.[my guess]..but it primarily for the Midwestern area...which of course, is HUGE!

The Scott dude wasn't totality out of line, but he defiantly confused Hometown Hot Rods with some of those other mags out there. Congrats to John for telling him like it is without getting snotty. Class act.

Props to Norwell for awesome art as usual.

And to Breeder. I hope that John gets flooded with subscriptions because of this thread. He really deserves it.

Nice response and certainly in line with the basics. Like it or not there is indeed an element in hot rods and racing that some acknowledge and some don't. I grew up around it at local circle tracks and car shows, shops from all around town, craftsmen (and hacks!) of many form. To say flat out "no it doesn't" is wrong. That's not to say it requires everyone's attention. Some things tend to distract the focus, even at times by design.

In all my years I can't recall the look that several magazines tend to push. Nothing wrong with it if you like it, but for the way it was, no. The cars too. Tudor sedans layin on the gorund full of rusty parts and tires nearly to the roof...a mutant form if ever we've seen one. This magazine clearly avoids that thought and I applaud their focus and style.

I too subscribed and purchased some back issues.

In the early sixties I use to send out newsletters to clients with information on car book subscriptions "borrowed" from Standard Rate & Data. Subscription and newstand sales numbers were divided into eight regional areas and the midwest always produced the big numbers for HOT ROD, CAR CRAFT, PHR and R&C, beating the west coast readers by a bunch.

That's real interesting about the sales #s for the midwest, having grown up here since 1952, it always seemed to me that every car magazine was published on the west coast and covered only the west coast cars. In high school I thought the west coast was some sort of car "mecca" until I started discovering what was happening here, it just wasn't covered in the glossie mags. the first issues of HHR billed themselves as "the No-Coast" alternative, I think John is just beginning to tap our potential as far as press goes, the cars, shows and garages have been here for a long time. The self-proclaimed "world's street rodding authority" (-more like "advertisement authority", how pompous can you get, but I do admit to reading it,) has a cover photo and feature in the latest issue of a midwest (Kentucky) shop. Buckaroo Communications is a Midwest publisher that does some midwest coverage, also.

OK, Breeder, I subscribed, but DaTinman is too cheap, and I'll have to share. Who's copy are you sharing?
Top notch art, Great reply by the editor. My sentiments exactly, yet I can use some old fashioned "english", interspersed with some German and - nevermind. I do admire the female form; however, I just don't think it belongs in a hotrod mag as a focal point.

    John,

Well good for you, as we know . . . values and morals don’t seem to start at home anymore! Some of us have to carry the flag and what a great way to get young guys and gal's interested into a great hobby and past time that is predominately a bunch of old men. You are the catalyst to change that.

I liked your reply . . . as my Dad always said, "Kill them with Kindness".

One of the many great things about HHR, it gives rodders like myself and many others a choice now . . . no garbage. HHR is a great magazine WITH OUT the girls and profanity.

As far as your grammar, I just made it out of the 12th grade, but it reads "Good to Me"!

Choice is good and I choose HHR.

Stick to your core beliefs and values, and God will honor that.

Merry Christmas to you and your Family

    ISKY
