Pete Henderson roadster.....tell me about it.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Eyeball, Dec 8, 2006.

  1. I searched and found this car mentioned a few times on here but not much about it. It is somewhat the direction I am heading with my roadster build and I am looking for some info. I have TRJ with it in but it didn't give much as far as specs.

So does anyone have more pics? And how much of a chop is on the windscreen?

    also,
when im trying to figure out measurements on cars like this
i try to find a known measurement...say the distance between body lines in an area close to where you want
so lets say on this car...this is very crude cause im holding a ruler to a computer screen
but anyways at the front of the cowl i measure 2-1/32 between the body lines
and between the 2 pivots on the windsheild post i measure 9/32
so just find that measurement of the cowl on a stock car and figure the ratio into full scale
this gives you an estimate as to how much it would be chopped
you should use a book and a more acurate measuring device
just round it into whole numbers because most chops are in incraments of 1/2 inch id guess

anyway thats just a thought as to how to figure it out
i usually do this trying to see how high cars sit and things like that

**asking the guy who owns it or restored it would be alot easier though**
    good luck

Well it's got Denver heads, stock mechanical brakes, it's a very basic '40s hot rod.
It's a joy to look at her in person. The Longley's up in Deland restored the car, they're an amazing father and son team.
I wish I had more pictures to show you.
It's been faithfully restored, but not overly so, it's got a lot of its character left intact.
I can tell you the car went through many phases of existance, at one point it had a nailhead in it and was drag raced hard. I saw the frame, it was a total mess. I'm not sure it has the original frame under it anymore.
    I'll find out more.

Beautiful roadster. Now that's a traditional hot rod!! I'd like to hear more about it too.

Yeah, you need that Milestones book.

EVERYBODY on the HAMB needs that Milestones book! Very good reading, for hours and hours. Might want to laminate the pages to protect from drool though.

  10. One of my all time favourites as well.

Rod and custom magazine june 2001, there is an article on the horse vs. Hot Rod story which leads into the history of the car.

Also the Don Montgomery book, Hot rod Memories Relived Again has many pictures of the car in period including a full page picture of it outside a gas station.

The car has an amazing history, one of the best I ever seen.
It participated in lakes, drags and roundy roundy being driven by big names such as Manny Ayulo.
It was featured in Hot Rod and B movies of the time including 'Hot Rod Gang'.
It was I believe featured in Hot Rod magazine in the 50's in its updated form.

Oh yeah, I believe that the original gas tank from the Henderson roadster somehow ended up under Gray Baskerville's deuce.

  12. Gray Baskerville wrote a side column in the rod And Custom article just on the history of the tank and how he came to own it!

To allay anyone's fears. Gray's car does NOT sit outside on a regular basis.

The Baskerville deuce is well cared for. He is certainly missed, what a super nice guy.
If G.B. isn't the one driving it she couldn't have found better hands to preserve her.

  29. Mike, welcome to the forum....I met you and your Dad at Pebble Beach last year, I was the English guy, friend of 'Nads'

    Hey,
Of course I remember. Sorry we weren't in the best mood. Despite your nice photos the car had just been royally screwed up by the trucking company.
I still love the timing tag. The only one I know of issued by Russetta during the war that still exists. One week after the Normandy invasion. It was done on galvanized roofing material.
Thanks for the welcome. 'Bout time I got into this century and got on the HAMB.
Say, I posted a question on the Vicky board and now I can't find that page to see if there's a reply. How do I find where I've been. Thanks, Merry X-Mas...-Mike
