No clew....this has got to be good!!

  15. The bumper was to break the finish line beam. Note how many of the other roadsters have extended noses and/or wings. NHRA had a spec on how far forward body work could extend from the centerline of the front axle. For those who chose to not run bodywork, a bumper could be positioned to keep everyone equal at the finish stripe.

a little off track, but it looks like Jett Field quoted it before
Ricky Bobby and Cal Naughton did in "Talladega Nights"

not only have I followed and photographed drag racing for the past 30 years, I also
look over cars and see the details people add to them.

Here is one of my favorites...

  22. Tommy Springfield's "Triple Trouble" ran three (3) 376" Chevys,two injected,one carbed.Ran 10s in 1966,reportedly hit some 9s.In 1967,he removed the front motor,and ran the car as a wheelstander ! Dennis Doubleday

  23. Has to be the oldest picture I've ever seen of SR I. Hell, it wasn't even a Swamp Rat yet.

  25. Hell, I just thought since it's a "street roadster" the bumper was to make it legal.

My Dad used to get his engine machine work done at the Parts Mart. Kip Brundage used to own/operate the store out of Campbell, CA. The story I was told is that he was color blind and used to count down the lights on the tree. I don't remember who his partners were on the car. BTW the young fan shaking his hand is me. Probably '67 or '68. Not sure where the top pic is taken, but the bottom one is at Fremont. I have some other pics from that event.

It is for front overhang so the front bumper trips the finish line lights instead of the front tires. It puts the roadsters on equal footing with the later bodied cars.

I see Rich beat me too the punch. I dont know if NHRA ever fixed the rule or not but they had no overhang rule in Super Gas when I was running. I had a front bumper that was 3 feet out in front of the front tires. I had more that one racer that lined his late model car up on my front fender at the finish line and didnt know how he got beat.
