My buddy Wes and I built this in the mid 80's.........181ci. chevy II.

Maybe not the most "traditional" RPU ... but Joe Cardoza's '29 Roadster Pickup was historically significant in that Joe was the first (or maybe second) to put a Jag rear-end in a Hot Rod (circa 1967) ... and yes, I did just say Jag rear-end and Hot Rod in the same sentence!

Joe was a founding member of the San Jose Roadsters (circa 1961) ... and has been a member of the Bay Area Roadsters since 1976.

This was my 29 which I had to sell to pay bills and start the next project. Has a 364 Buick Nailhead & TB400. Loved that little truck! Wish the new owner would show up on the Hamb with it.

It's certainly possible that your old RPU may of had some influence on the Cardoza RPU.

I believe Joe started building his '29 RPU circa 1959 or 1960 ... and Joe has been Hot Rodding since the late '40s [in 1948, he brought his Deuce Roadster to Gene Winfield for some modifications (later sold to Lew Thompson) and his belly tank dragster was featured in the March 1955 issue of HRM (pgs. 42 & 43)].

Through the years, Joe has continually made changes to his RPU ... the jag rear-end in 1967 ... several repaints ... louvers in the aprons ... injected, supercharged, & turbo-charged engines ... all kinds of mods.

Not sure on the top ... it looks to have been done by the same guy that made the top for Don Varner's (Ron Covell built) RPU ... His name escapes me right now ... but he was a very popular upholsterer in the Bay Area in the 70's / 80's.

Yes ... Joe still has his RPU ... and is still an active member of the Bay Area Roadsters ... and you can't be an active member of BAR, if you don't DRIVE your roadster!

 

Way cool! When I was a kid and those cars were mostly shown in Black & White I thought Cardozas truck was your old one Dean.

 

My roadster PU Gone but not forgoten! 276 Inch Flathead, C4 9" Drove like a freakin' go cart. The only reason I got rid of it....the damn thin kept shrinking, and eventually I didn't fit anymore. Such is life!

I owned a couple of these at one time - sold 'em a few years ago..... Orange one was originally owned by Sacramento FD and sold from there in 1958. It was drag raced with a BBC until sanity prevailed!

 

Now I've got one of these - suitable for age 12 +, some assembly required, batteries not included! Not sure if it counts?? as technically it's a ute with an integral pickup bed.
