  1. Don't forget to go back and take the old guy for a ride as soon as you get it running. Great score!

Wow, my first car was a 41 Ford Super Deluxe tudor, that my dad got for me back 59. I still have it, it's restored and mostly stock except for that early Firepower.

Having met you and your son I gotta say thats about the perfect first car.
My first car was a 46 ford tudor sedan, which I paid 300 for in 1989, it was alot worse than the 41 you guys just nabbed..

    congrats..

Cool dad + Cool Kid + Really Cool first Rod = trouble for mom. Hope she's on board with the project and HEY when it's finished, don't ask the kid if you can borrow the car on Saturday night dad.......... congrats

  7. Hey there Terry, I missed this when it first came up. What a great score! That is going to be a heckuva nice starter project.

Right on, can't wait to see some progress pics.

  8. Between the adapters and the mounts on the crossmember, I'm betting it had an early 265 with the front mounts. These motors also had mounts at the bellhousing to keep the weight more evenly distributed. The stamped piece is a Ford piece used with adapter plate and was used to hook a 49-53 flathead to the early trans OR as part of the OHV conversion.
I'm hoping you son will keep his first ride forever...sure wish I had.

That'll be a great story for him to tell to his kids. That 16 year old in me is a tad bit envious!:)

First off poor ole Dad is now pushed out to the Garage, and the 41 is in it's new home in the shop, and he has washed it inside and out twice already and it's sporting a new coat of wax!

Great car for a 16 year old. When I was 16 I had a black super deluxe...bought it with a froze motor and built a 53 merc for it.
My son bought his first car at 16....a 50 ford club coupe. He went with a 400 sbc and I got his old flathead.

It should be fun watching your son build that '41. It must make you a pretty proud Daddy.

  23. Tell him to get underneath it and clean out those rocker boxes... there's probably a surprise waiting... or the perfect opportunity to learn how to use a sheetmetal brake and learn how to weld... the patch panels are priced way too high.

Didja get a rear window for it? If not, I may be able to help... They aren't flat.

You know Andrew you bring up a intersting point.

While Samuel's fire is lit, I want to make sure it keeps burning. What I mean is I hope his first rod is a good running, fun car, with as few brake downs as possible. Of course we all know a old car will always mean some tinkering, but like wise I'm sure we've all had those certin cars that really test our fort-a-tude. I'm thinking of something Ryan wrote about his white 55 "Learning the joys of driving a old car".

All that said I think I'll be recomending a SBC, combo. I have a 283 ready for a re-build and a good 3-speed with 57 chevy bellhouseing and a NOS ansen 3-spd shifter. Easy to work on, cheap to get parts for, and usally a solid runner.

This also brings up the front end, while I would without thought stick a straight axle in there, and most likely will, a MII drives awfully nice for a young guy going 70+ down the highway, with his music playing, buddies laughing, and his mind on everything except the road. If you know what I mean....

I was lucky, my first was a '56 Chevy that just always seemed to run. Or at least always got me home.... I might have not stayed in this hobby had it been one of those demon cars that brake down EVERY TIME you back out of the driveway. Who knows, but I know it's harder to stay interested if your always worried about the click or clack you hear, or whether you'll be calling for a tow home again. I want to make this fun for him, not a chore.

  25. Get his hands good n dirty pulling that SBC apart and he'll learn plenty along the way. Cooler/faster/whatever engines can come further down the road, you're right to get him running and reliable first and foremost.

    Keep the updates coming.

NICE!! It's so refreshing to see a kid today that's into classic iron instead of hopping up another rice burner (now THOSE things P me off!) I must be getting old, because the other day i was picking up a pizza, and some kid was on his phone sending pics of my '86 Diplomat, and I heard him say to his buddy "Dude, it's even older than I am" I looked at him while laughing and just said "Junior, I got socks that are older than you" This is bad....I'm only 42 and creeping fartism is setting in....

  29. That's funny, I have an '88 5th Ave, similar to your car to drive to work. Young guys are saying, "Dude, old skool!" I say, "This is lame, the newest car I own!"

Oh, I'm soooo jealous now! I was just jealous when my son found his '47 Fordor but my dream was to have a '41 Ford anydoor car. I gave up and moved on to my current project. Good for your son, hoping his generation keeps the old car hobby alive.
