That picture of Shinoda (and some others in this treasure trove) was taken at Great Bend, KS. Can't say when, but it might be the first US Nats.

OK - first, this selection of photos is absolutely wonderful in its preservation of racing history! Thanks so much, Farmer for posting them.

In post #2, the pix were taken from all over, the salt, Daytona Beach, Indy & Gasoline Alley, etc. I can't ID any on that page.

Post #3, 3rd line down, 1st pic - it's the Summers Brothers "Polliwog". Farther down, the very wide car is Athol Grahams' "City of Salt Lake" which crashed first time out and killed Mr. Graham. Also note "The Redhead", as the next to last pic on this page.

Post #5, the number 15 Mercury stocker was driven by Tim Flock, a famous NASCAR driver.

Post #8, the '57 Ford was driven by Ralph Moody, father of Holman/Moody racecar builders for Ford, etc.

Post #9, the first pic is the "Bustle Bomb" dragster - ran at US Nats @ Great Bend. The third pic is the Art Chrisman car.

Post #12, the "unknown racer" is Goldie Gardner, Brit driver famed for a salty MG. (note the Union Jack on side of car) Fourth row down, first pic - in the background is Jazzy Jim Nelson's Fiat altered at Great Bend.

Post #18, mostly Indy stuff, but bottom row, first pic is Wilbur Shaw's Indy-winning Maserati, beautiful car now in Indy museum.

Post #19, second row down, first pic is Kaye Don's "Silver Bullet" on the beach. Designed by Reid Railton, it went after Campbell and Segrave's LSR records, but couldn't do the deed. Fourth row down, middle pic - another view of the Polliwog.

Post #22, first and fourth pic, the "Golden Commode", now known as "The Pumpkinseed". Look close at fourth pic, Mickey Thompson in jacket. Then, another view of Polliwog.

That's all I can pick out right now. Some of these photos can be ID'd completely with a little research and brain picking. Let's keep at, folks!

Great photos... Fantastic find, and many thanks to your friend and you for sharing them, and not keeping them hidden.

This is not a Shoebox custom like you listed but rather the George Cerny 1950 Plymouth wagon Shop Truck.

Great work Speedtool and Rikster, In batch #2 I see Rex Mays Alfa #14 as it ran at Indy in 1937 and quite a few other 37 indy runners like Ronnie Householder and a couple of Babe Stapp. Then in one of the composite pictures there's an 8c engine with very long headers which may be 38 after it was modified by Fred Offenhauser and Ed Winfield.
The 'Olds Streamliner' is the Bustle Bomb's ****.

I've kept poring over these terrific historic pix, and identifying even more cars, people, and places. Bear with me, OK?

Post #3, the first pic is another of Goldie Gardner (unknown racer) with his MG racecar.

Post #5, the white Ford stockers are at Pikes Peak (sponsored by Colorado Springs Ford dealer). The 3rd row down, 1st pic is a powerboat race - you can just see a boat to the right of the spectators.

Post #8, the same Fords at Pikes Peak. The 3 guys at the Mercury racer, Tim Flock in the middle, knee held up is Bill Stroppe who built both Mercs.

Post #9, the shop truck from Hall's Speed Shop in Wichita - is at Great Bend (they are still operating as a speed shop).

Post #11, 3rd row, 1st pic - this is a club car, the "Motor Monarchs" (SoCal, I think).

Post #22, the guy in the straw boater hat next to the cop? That's Eddie Rickenbacker (WWI ace) who managed Indy for 15 years before WWII.

Post #23, I'm pretty sure the 3rd photo is Malcolm Campbell with the Bluebird in 1935.
Anybody notice the red bobber bike is a British JAP (J.A. Prestwich)?

That's all for now. I wonder who took these photos over nearly 20 years? Was it a newspaperman? A racefan, or his girlfriend taking pix? It's quite the mystery.

Again, thanks to Farmer for posting them. What a collection!

It would be interesting to know who the photographer was who got to witness so many amazing events.
5th post 2nd row middle, check out the Odd Rod in the middle of that eclectic lineup, it's hard to imagine what type of compe***ion that might have been,
also the Shaw Maserati in those shoes, I can't make out what kind of highway patrol that is behind it.

Yeah the guy has been long dead, at least that's what i was told. My friend bought these pics as a collection of the guys' years of hotrodding/photo taking on his hotrod trips. I REALLY appreciate the info you all have posted re: the pictures...history, etc. And I thank all of you for the big thanks I have gotten for posting these pics. It was a lot of effort as i had to scan each original photo on my scanner, crop, rotate, and save the files on my computer. Alot of them were off-center when i scanned them so i had to scan them over again until they were centered, so thanks again for the appreciation! :) If i get a chance i'll post more up here as i scan them. I'm glad you all have enjoyed these pictures. I wish i could have met the guy who took them, but never will as he's dead.

Farmer, thanks so very much for scanning and posting these. It's already helped me with some archival/history stuff I'm doing in conjunction with another fella to record vehicles that have run on the salt flats by number, cl*** and they year(s) they ran, not to mention the team or individual. Big job, but we're doing what we can. This was started by Sum Patterson and can be seen here:
http://purplesagetradingpost.com/sumner/bville-cars-1/bville-cars%20index-main.html at least that's the "car" (as opposed to motorcycles) section.

While checking out the really kool photos, I found several of them that I think are of the innards of the 777 Kenz & Leslie liner...but I'm not sure. They're in the 2nd batch and numbered 42-45. They show what I believe is a Y-block with T-bird valve covers. (I'm not very knowledgeable about Ford motors)

If someone has some input on this, I'd sure appreciate it. And I sure look forward to any more photos that might be forthcoming.

I think you are referring to Lloyd Scott's "Bustle Bomb" twin-engine nitro dragster that had an Olds motor in front, and a Caddy in back. It was the first digger over 150 if I remember correctly.

This thread has found extra life on the Landracing.com forum - now some of the old salt dogs and other racers can weigh in and help ID some of this marvelous stuff.

That's a great shot of the Fuesenberg. Cool to see both Topping Specials, too.

    Thanks a lot.

Thank you for making such an effort - amazing photos that someone collected or took themselves. Great that some can identify and add a bit more history for us to enjoy.

Speedball car was owned by Dave Marquez of the Ventura Motor Monarchs ... subject of many car mag features & a decade ahead of it's time in quality of construction.

Fur Biscuit is there any way of finding out the photographers name from the estate sale or something?

No it's the Odd Rod fosho, I did mention the rear of the Bustle Bomb

    I'll give this a try...

19.jpg is "Halley's Comet" the Mercedes-Miller of McClure Halley. This is a very late shot of the car, definitely 1936 but probably later...

12.jpg is a Maserati 8CTF (probably #3032...which would mean that the guy tending to it is Cotton Henning?)

20.jpg is the Alfa Romeo 8c 2900 Touring MM Spyder #412030. This photo could have been taken anywhere (Pikes Peak, Bridgehampton, Watkins Glen...) but it may more likely be at Muroc or Bonneville. This is the car that's with Ralph Lauren now.

15.jpg I am going to take a guess here and say that it is Hal Cole in the KK/Grancor Special, Indy 1949.

21.jpg I think this is one of the Tuffy's Offy cars at Indy in '49, possibly during qualifying...something's not totally right about that guess though.

Hopped up T roadster with Bardahl decal.jpg is obviously the Multy Aldrich T in what looks like a later incarnation.

Hot 4 carbed Illinois roadster.jpg is the Ullrich Brothers' Fuesenberg (Ford ch***is, Duesenberg engine.) As the plate indicates this is probably a picture taken in the midwest or on the East coast.

MG TD making a night run at Bonneville.jpg is from either 1954 or 1957? Fur Biscuit would know.

-Fur Biscuit wouldn't know the photographer's name who the photos came from....i'm the one who got them from a friend. He doesn't know either. It will remain a mystery, but it doesn't matter cause he's dead now ;)

10.jpg is George Connor/Marks Miller Special.

11.jpg is wow, Rex Mays in the Bowes Seal Fast special (Alfa Romeo 8c35)

12.jpg is Cliff Bergere's Offy engined Midwest Red Lion Special.

13.jpg Kelly Petillo's Offy powered car.

14.jpg The car on the right is, I think, Frank Brisko's Miller FWD...Elgin Piston Pin Special.

15.jpg. This one is wild. It's a Maserati V8Ri (#4503) that has been widened to fit two people. Babe Stapp was the driver. It is a Topping Special.

    17.jpg is Harry McQuinn's Stevens-Miller.

    18.jpg Should be Ralph Hepburn's Stevens-Offy.

19.jpg is Ronnie Householder in another Topping Special, this one a bizzare one-of-a-kind Miller.

2.jpg is the third place car of Ted Horn.

20.jpg This one is a real mind-bender. It's obviously a 6CM Maserati but what is it doing on a road in Colorado? I am going to guess that this is ch***is #1552.

21.jpg appears to be the engine of 6CM #1552. Does anyone have any record of Cotton Henning taking a car (not the 8CTF) to Pike's Peak before the war?

My point was that Biscuit is the keeper of arcane MG information on the HAMB.
