  1. Urp...that's the one. I always thought the "piece of sh*t you could actually take a sh*t on" was rather ironic. :D

I figure the Beverly Hillbilly's truck would not qualify as it was kinder original!!!

  3. Really looking for "novelty"?

Each to his/her own. I built them in plastic when I was a kid. That was then and times change. Now I see OCC building this kind of "stuff" with 2 wheels. Waste of usable parts and $$$

Well the thread is for novelty hot rods, just going back in history to bring em all together and have a chat about them.
But I wonder how amny folks saw these originals in shows and other who saw them in the toy stores and from there were motivated into main stream hot rodding.

Those bright and shinny novelty rods on the cover of those early hot rod magazines sure attracted my attention when living in the old days of black and white TV etc.

  7. a bunch of us grew up seeing them at shows....check out the showrods thread it been going about a year

Novelty rods and such usually get a good bashing, but as an exension of what fiftyv8 has said, most new rodders don't have a highly developed sense of taste and style. I would be horrified to be seen now in my first car with all of it's "cool" mods.

  10. Meatball - I remember the bathtub thing as an Eldon Kit, I remember as a kid I thought that they were cool. The molding, plating, & color - without paint was ace. Just build it & it looked like the box picture. I also remember building the sand dragon? I think with double sand tires & a Corvair engine.

You mean one good fire would rid the world of the lot of them in one hit!!!
Boy I hope that does not happen, they should be kept and protected for more generations to suffer not just us.

FiftyV8, Ray Farhner built two of them. The original was for show and didn't run. Then, a couple of years later he built the second as an exhibition drag car with a racing hemi on fuel. The driver was crazy, but not crazy enough to drive it as fast as it was capable of.

This photo was taken at the first and only run it ever made, in Phoenix. It then became a show car too. They are identical except the original had only a gutted 331 hemi and the front wheels of the original were the 18" Americans mounted with Avon motorcycle slicks on the front. The original was a real wooden horsedrawn hearse body and the copy was fiberglass.

Cool, now that is some history to recall.
    Thanks, Tom.
Happy new year to you and all the other folks who took the time to post or read any of my threads during 2008.

The car show promoters paid the owners so-called feature car fees to appear in non-competition. The better known cars were then advertised and in theory, brought in extra admissions. Many of the better known cars (Roth, for example) made their owners buckets of feature car cash. That was the motivation for many builders. Ray Farhner was (since deceased) and Daryl Starbird still is, both builders and show car producers.
