    Looking for some skoolin.

What is the coolest, most traditional, unique, and period correct tire and wheel combo of the 60s??? looking for something that isnt your everyday average torque thrust.

  2. My area in Pa. you seen lots of stock wheels that were reversed and usually painted red.

  3. You'll probably get a lot of responses to this thread.
Opinion posts seem to do that.

Basics are, cool is as cool does.

If you like it, nothing else matters.

Not much help, granted, but like most times in building a hot rod, you're on your own to a great extent.

If you see something you really like, copy it.

Stealing ideas is a time honored hot rod tradition....

In Southern California in the mid to late 60's, the Early Times Car Club set the standards for wheels...Americans, Cragars, and Halibrands and Goodyear Blue Streaks were pretty much the norm...this photo is from 1967

Wouldn't it depend on which car?

Around here Torque Thrusts, Cragar S/S, and Ansen Sprint (and clones) were where it was at from the mid 60's. A little earlier there were quit a few chrome reversed wheels, some with Baby Moons, some with Spiders and some with chrome lug nuts.

There weren't many custom wheels in '65, at least not in Pa. Mostly bare wheels or baby moons.

  11. So you said the mid sixties, you are still leaving out what kind of car you have. It all matters. Full tilt show car? Drag inspired car? Low buck car? Custom? Hot rod? Whatya doin? As far as "everyday average Torque Thrust", they were on a lot of cars in the sixties, and if you go to the trouble to find REAL American mags for your car today, it would not be "average". Other guys have stated the other obvious options. Chrome reverse wheels were another popular look. Look in old mags( the old way to do it) and I am sure something will jump out at you. D.

  12. In the crowds I ran with chrome reverses were common. You could get 'em for $20-$30 each at Western Auto and they seemed to look good on nearly anything. A few kids had Cragars. I'm going for the early/mid 60s look on my '56 Fairlane. Debating chrome reverses or Vintiques stocks painted black, with baby moons (smoothies) or original poverty dog dish caps.

I am more curious of the wheels of the era than for my truck specifically... but if youve got an idea for it im open.. 65 f100 short wide bed ... stock height for now. semi gloss kirker hotrod black and chrome trim parts.

I am mainly learning the traditional ways... im only 27 and new to the traditional scene

  14. I can vouch the same for the Dallas area.
Every once in a while you would find some old school rodder running full Moon discs, but we all thought they were out of style.
He usually had a DA, with a leather jacket, and we considered him a dinosaur since we were all into the Beach boys So Cal surf thing.
The torque thrust went on EVERYTHING from roadsters and coupes to muscle cars.
I remember lots of those chrome pointy full Moon style wheel discs too.
Summer school '65 at Bryan Adams high in Dallas some guy showed up with a '55 post that was set up gasser style, and it was the coolest thing we had seen since Motley's T-bucket!!!
Had Halibrands on all four corners, and the perfect gasser stance.
    Thanks, Mike

In my opinion, custom wheels were the story of the 60's. In 1960 hub caps or painted wheels were the thing with rare chrome wheels being made rather than just bought and mag wheels very rarely on anything but race cars. The popularity of chrome wheels spahned companies like Mel's Chrome Wheels and Appliance Plating and other wheel companies. Soon came Cragars and Americans in the usual hot rod game of one-up's manship. Mel's became John's which became Western Wheel and the race was on with the new giant wheel business exploding through the 60's and still growing.

Chrome reverse wheels, maybe with baby moons, with thin whitewall tires. Thats the look I remember for customs in the mid/late 60's when I was a kid. It's the wheel/tire combo I plan for my 64 Acadian wagon.

The wheels of choice were regional, in the Puget Sound area @ that time period was American 5 spokes, Halibrands for the "bucks up" among us. Radir tri-rib 5 spokes, Cragers, and Chrome reversed for us peon less fortunate folks!

Torq Thrusts are my favorites. What tires were you running then?
The wheels you can find, but finding 60s style tires is the problem.

Good thread, hope to find the answer as to what would look best on a 1962 built '30 Ford Roadster with Buick finned drums.
