That's probably a smart move. 2" doesn't sound like a great deal but I'm sure that it all adds up and is exactly what is needed to clear the hood. I hate to get rid of my hood because it's so nice looking but if I keep the 331 I am going to need some new hood sides.

Here is a picture of a '32 roadster with a Ardun equipped flathead. The bubbles look large in the picture but didn't look out of place in person.

Custom Builder & Jeffery James, Thanks for listening & the kind words. I'm new to the HAMB. I'm putting a 354 Chrysler in a 30 A Coupe. No hood, No fenders, the engine looks too cool to cover it up! My first search here was '30 Coupe' and I found some incredible builds. I got answers to questions I haven't thought to ask. I'm 58, when I was 15 I helped an old guy put a 53 331 Hemi in a Model A. That "BIG Giant Squared Off Extended Bellhousing"! I helped move the engine around a little while HE torched the firewall. I "cut" some too. When I was in the car with the torch, the engine kept getting bigger & BIGGER & kept coming further & further inside & we kept on cutting ! I learned a lot. Things have changed. "Most" people are doing a much nicer job now. Good Luck!

I like the blisters are set in the louvers, but it must have been tough to trim the louvers neat keep them straight after welding.

Not trying to tell you how to do this BUt if you have your cowl AND radiator shroud mocked up you now know the inside demention that will be needed to run a hood with a Hemi that size. I cut a wood broom stick handle at 29" that was t he demention of my 354 Hemi and started moving it back and forth to see how far I needed to move the motor back. I also have a '29 Chevy coupe, and have measured it and don't see 2" helping you much****uming the '29 is close to the same as your '31...........................
I ended up puting the 354 in the '36 Dodge truck, a new SBC in the Chevy coupe. Wanted to go hemi in my '36 Ford coupe without cutting it and decided on a 241 like has been said before.

Cool I would love to see you '29 Chevy! That 29" of your 354 is what I originally measured as the width of mine but we round off at 30.
i think that the engine valve covers have to sit back 12 inches from the start of the hood for that to work. I wish I wasn't so attached to the 331 because a smaller HEMI would be the ticket.

If anyone has more inspiration as far as images go Hot Rods, European Sports cars, Customs what ever throw them up for us to gaze over.

My 34 has a fair amount of setback combined with cut-outs exposing just a hint of valve cover. I like the raw look of it 'just fitting in' rather than a bulge. Bit like getting that slight flash of stocking top!
Any further setback would make it impossible for me to drive as I'm pretty big so this combination works well for me.

  13. SoCal has two sizes of blisters.

The larger one looks to be about the same as the one shown on FiveWindowJonny's good looking Deuce coupe.

J.J., I think the blisters are really cool and signal a "beware of contents" that will peak interest in the car. When they are body color they blend right in anyway. Your rod is gonna be bad**** any way you do it!!~Sololobo~

  15. Another HAMB blister thread.

Take note of the feed scoop near the top as well as the blister on the black and yellow roadster in the SoCal ad.
This one is a nice size and I believe it's the smaller of the two.

  16. My blisters were specifically built to clear the Parker Valve covers on the '54 331. You can barely open the hood and actually have to flex it a bit to keep from scraping the fenders. They were riveted on after paint and kind of have a Race/Bonneville look.

I think that style would look good with a hi-boy, better than blisters molded and painted to match. The blended matching ones say "street rod" to me more than Hot Rod. IMHO.

BTW, Rex Rogers at Custom Auto beat mine out ............

THe other option is to get a 270 Red ram. They fit. Dont move the engine back, if you ever want to sell the car, I doubt it will be a selling point. Yea neat for you, not neat for someone else.

The hood on this car is unbelievable and like the rest of the car, the more you look the more you see that you overlooked before. The small bubbles were possible because of the swoopy stretched frame. I spent hours walking around this car and finding details. Count the louvers.

Look closer, the blisters are mounted on flat surfaces not on top of the louvers and the louvers arrayed around them. Pretty clever in my book and definitely has to be custom built for the application. Also, nothing wrong with the blisters being unpainted, more of a competition look. In hot rodding your allowed to make your own statement about "style and appearance".:cool::D

This is about the best one I have seen with blisters. How much was the frame stretched?

On another note, who has a 276 Desoto or a 241/270 Red Ram? How do you like them?

  24. C'mon now yourself. Those hood sides are a definition of "custom side panels to fit"

NOT on top of louvers........those started as BLANK hood sides with louvers laid out to fit the engine and cut with a pull-max. The blisters are aluminum, shaped and fit using a wooden buck and riveted on after paint for more of a competion look.

Rodders Journal seemed to like it but what do they know ? Come to think of it so did Rod & Custom. The STYLE is Hot Rod and the APPEARANCE is outstanding !

Just keep ordering YOUR parts from a 1-800 prefix, life will be easier and your steet rod will be smoooth.............

Blisters have been applied on aircraft and hot rods since the beginning of time. Some have been painted but Five window Johnnie is right, some have that bare machine race look to them just what is on his award winning Deuce. To each his own, but to sit here and comment about what he has done to his hood sides almost insinuates that it wasn't ever done like that in the early years of Hot Rodding.

I don't see one single problem with the appearance of your car Johnnie. Others must agree with me or it wouldn't of made Rodders Journal not long ago.

Anyone have any idea of what would have been the rule that insisted on hoods in the early 50's while running the lakes? It seems that after looking at at all of my reference material a hood top was required but not so much the sides. I went back and looked at THE BIRTH OF HOT RODDING book and see a lot of great shots of ideas that can be applied. Some really cool ideas came from Streamliner classes trying to run Flatheads in cut down T bodies. Even Hilborn's streamliner had a really cool looking blister. If anybody has images like that for ideas please post them up.

Not a blister but an option.

I am putting a 331 in my 34 sedan. I think a hemi engine is a really gorgeous piece of machinery and I would never think of covering it up with side panels. Sort of like having a beautiful girlfriend or wife and making her wear a bag over her head. But hey, we all have different tastes and that happens to be my flavor.

  29. Here's a couple of pictures of a 32 I took at a cruise night in Ypsilanti MI several years ago.Don't know the owner but the cutouts look a lot like the ones on***** Smith's car.
