We are building a neat 62 econoline truck for Woods , Ryan Falconer built the 300 inline , fuel injected. HELP! I NEED A (Heavy Duty) stock motor mount, its a tube that goes from frame rail to frame rail , unibody frame rail I guess you could call it. will post more pictures soon.
The truck you saw was supposed to be our parts car, Woods cleaned it up for his Son in law to drive. The one we are doing is a ground up custom. Under the truck we narrowed the rear leafs and rearend to fit the biggest tire we could in stock tub........it runs shockwave air to help it if it carries anything. c-4 trans and the motor is really bitchen, the headers are un real stainless , custom fuel injection, coil per cyl Ryan said it will dyno around 300 HP. Dropped and narrowed axle up front ,4 wheel disc brakes , stailess fuel tank, the works.
Cole, what you're looking for is a 65-67 crossmember. 61-64 had the sheetmetal arms that supported the motor. 65-67 had the tubular crossmember. They were the same for regular and heavy duty, but the mount were welded in different positions depending on whether the truck had a 170 or a 240. I'll see if I can dig up some pics.
Here's the crossmembers you're looking for. The one on top is from a 240 van and the one on the bottom is from a 170 van. 65-67 are otherwise the same. You need one to do a v8 or a big 6 (300) conversion, so they're pretty popular and hard to come by... but not too hard. I've been compiling a lot of information about motor swaps in Econolines, so if you have any questions, let me know. Joe
The moter mont angle is different on a 300inline 6 to a winsor motor. I tried a V=8 crossmember in my 54F100 build and the inline line would not bolt up. I had to fabricate my own mounts.
Woods has three trucks, I guess one is a later model , I "borrowed" the cross member out of one to mount the motor in the one im doing , I had to make new mounts on the body and changed the angle so the trans dont hang down, now I need to replace the one I used. I believe Its the top one in hellfish's picture above. Will it lay on the rockers?? no.
Cole, Before you send the check do you want me to send some pix of the crossmember out of my Econo P/U ? Dave
probably. That's the 240 crossmember. Supposedly a v8 or a 300 will drop right onto one of those, but some say it needs some tweaks. The 170 crossmember will also work, but you'll need to cut off the motor mounts and make new ones. The 170 are shorter and at the wron angle for a 300, or something like that. You will probably need a 65-67 dogbox too if you're running a 300. The 65-67 box is longer and taller.
Had a 300 six in mine for a while. Also had a set of Clifford headers on it with a 3;50 gear in the rear. Was very quick and would pull the mountain passes with ease. Was a lot easier to cool than the 302 in it now. The 300 is a tall motor also,I put spacers between the motor mount and the mounting tabs to lower it.
I doubt it. Can't wait to see it....you just know it's going to Schweet! (WIIIIIIDE chrome wires on indy car tires? hahhaaaa)
I find it interesting that of all of the shops Dan visits, when it comes time to spend his own money he takes it to.....................Cole. That says something.
A friend of mine used a dropped hot rod axle and had it narrowed to fit the Econo. It dropped the front end WAY down, but messed up the entire front end. He had to re-engineer the steering, and he put in a new, relocated MC and booster and pedals, move the shocks, etc. When it was finally driveable again, it rode like crap and it could steer, but had very little movement. The front end was down low, but the rear end was still up in the air due to the Econo's design. Lowering the rear also requires major reconstructive surgery. These things are NOT easy to lower very much without a significant amount of major work.
