IL ****s on taxes. Cook county sales tax just went up to 10.25%. Highest in the country. Btw, National Taxpayers Union gives Obama an F rating. So it's sure looking like the rest of the country is gonna get a taste of the same real soon. Back to the 70s!

What the heck? That ****s. I understand trying to catch people trying to get around paying taxes, I can't rightly complain about that, but book value is BS. Pretty much common sense that people rarely pay book value on a used vehicle.

What he said! A friend of mine was contacted by the wonderfully so******t state of illifornia a couple of months ago for this. You can buy and keep all you want, yes, but when you buy and sell them, look out!
Oh, yeah, I got my second notice yesterday(first time described in the past thread) this time for the wifes '66 chevyII. If they think I'm gonna pay another $1600 they're gonna have to try ****ing it out of me...and you know what I mean! Friggin' fascists!

I think the state will find a way to stick it to you one way or another.

  5. All you need to do is send in a copy of your bill of sale showing what you paid for it. This has been hashed out here several times over the past year.

Shoot, as if we haven't already gotten stuck with the "temporary" 9.25% sales tax. It's been what, 7 years since they raised them?

All states are suffering for the same reason. In California police officers and fire fighters can retire at 3% per year worked. I know cops that are retiring at 52 years old and are getting $80-90,000 per year or more for life. Good for them, but the states are unable to pay for all this much less all the other stuff. Its a real mess. All the promises are now coming due and people are living longer, too, so its an increasing disaster.
Not a rant, just the way it is, at least here.
Hopefully you can get an even break on your problem with your car.

What many said. WV will get on you to get a dealers licence after so many cars in a year also.

  12. This explains why the old car hobby isn't as popular in Illinois as some other states . Just be glad you didn't buy a new BMW , you'd be out about $80,000 .

A friend of mine, who just retired from one of the local DMV offices tipped me off to this a few weeks ago. Get a bill of sale and that should take care of the problem. I'm expectiing the same thing on the 34 Chevy that i just bought. They are specifically going after older cars, to get more tax money. It concerns the stated sale price. If the govt. thinks the price is too low, they come after you and your money. By the way, the dear state of Illinois not only has one gas tax,...they have a sales tax on top of that.:mad::mad: I've heard it's even worse in the Chicago area, where there is a municipal gas tax in addition to the two state gas taxes.:confused::confused: And the state STILL can't balance the budget.

I also know several major collectors/collections in Ill. Maybe I'll talk with a few of em and see what they've had to do. I know for a fact that there's no law that says how you handle your own property (property on topic...let's not get off track). My father and I bought and sold so many cars I can't remember em all. Every one of em transfered, taxes paid, only one ***hole from the city gave us **** about it. Tried to have the state stop us claiming we were dealers. He got fired. The only advantage dealers have over us is they pay no taxes on their purchases. They are for re-sale. Dealers must also collect sales tax on sales to end-users. As long as John Q Public let's the people they pay for administering civil duties **** them around they will.

The bottom line is that it's uncons***utional to dictate what a person can do with their cars once they're legal owners. No matter how it "looks" to that person causing the grief, you can sell it, keep it, store it, use it, does not matter. If they don't like transfering plates, **** em. It's their job. If you make $$$ on selling your property you pay income tax like everyone else. Where's the problem with something so ****in simple?

That sounds like a fairly good deal to me. $90 is only a 6% sales tax on a $1500 project car, only 0.6% on a 15K car. What do you consider a "reasonable project car price, when s**** price alone is so high?

Contact your local State Representative. Tell him your problem, tell him you VOTE, as does your wife, and you would like some help with this insane problem. You are being shafted by the state: they are singling YOU out to pay more taxes than you rightfully owe based on what they think it should be, regardless of you having proper do***entation.

And write a letter to the two Chicago newspapers as well, outlining the problem, and then, just for kicks, contact the TV news channel "comsumer advocate" people and tell them the problem you're having.

That would PISS ME OFF! It is NONE OF THEIR BUSINESS! If anyone really NEEDS to know WHY, it is because you are in the PURSUIT OF YOUR HAPPINESS! They need to BACK OFF or be REMOVED from their position!!!

Pure harr***ment from the state of IL. I just got my second notice for another car I ***led a year ago. Paid the required flat tax fee as required, but then they say I owe over $800 additional without even knowing what the cars condition or type. At some point, IL folks will get together on this and force their hand. I had to contact former owner to get the bill of sale I lost, then send it in certified mail. OH, of course they give a 2 week deadline for all this.

  22. bill o sale don't meann diddly here in minn.
(they ***ume your both scammin to avoid the tax)
they will look in a "old cars price guide "and tax your car for what" they "think it should be .(hmmm must be all options and big engine).. even both partys claiming the selling price it will take an appraiser with pics to prove them wrong... if it ends up being the lowest value in the guide in minesota they will not issue a "clear ***le' for a parts car

use this guide it is what most states use ...
most folks at the dmv ***ume that anybody buying a old car is buying the best one out there ...they told me.. "heck the tv shows /auctions show these old cars as being worth lotsa money so yours must be too!"
we have had to have 3 cars re vised on value and have won each time but it was hours on the phone and many mailings of pics and paperwork(which was never returned)

hint never give original old paperwork to the dmv with past ownwers info they do not save anything and the make no copies for in thier files ... give them copies and save the originals show them if you must but ask to getthem get them back while your face to face with them....

shhhese i feel for ya and i am so sorry your gonna go thru this ...
i need to go lay down now and keep from going postal at the dmv when they open in the morning..

and yes i live near j jim and he's been lucky

Well, I just got a tax notice in the mail today. The State of Illinois (or is that state of corruption ?) says that I owe $1100 in taxes on the 34 Chevy that I bought last June. Figuring backwards from their tax table, they figure that it's worth from $20,000 to $25,000, instead of the $5,000 that I paid for it. Rotten @*#&%@"*#%ing crooks!!!!!:mad::mad: I had thought that I was OK on the tax thing, because the ***le showed up about 3 months ago. Forgot to factor in the speed of government.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

This could have all been avoided by simply sending a Christmas card to Blago, along with some Christmas Cheer. What were you thinking?????

That's interesting I received a similar letter from the Illinois dept. of revenue last week regarding a 1965 Starfire I purchased in June. they believe I owe an addition $1,800.00 in tax.

I understand it's a third part appraisal company that comes up with the vehicle appraisal. I wonder if they work on commission?

Isn't this where Barack Hussein Obama is from? Wait until he applies this logic to the whole country.

  28. Nothing to get fired up about guys. 3 members in the club I'm in got the same letters in the last year. Each took a bill of sale in and all was forgotten. Sure its a little h***le, but as long as you didn't give more than $15k (on the bill of sale YOU provide) you won't owe anything more.

Its on public record in my county where I had to prove my 56 vw was only worth 50 dollars instead of the 3500.00 value they said it had. Just had to send them a pic and fill out a form, but it does get your ******* in a twist.:D

An appraisal works, too. The last one I got was on a car we'd owned for over 13mos!!!!
When I got my first one, I called Springfield and the (very nice) lady told me that they use a computer program that kicks 'em out.
