What was your ride in High School

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Hank37, Dec 6, 2008.

  1. 69' Dart with a built 340. I am lucky I never got caught doing some of the things I did in that poor car. I still have it and its waiting for a rebuild,

You guys are probably gonna laugh, but my "ride" in high school was a 1975 Chevrolet VEGA....:D
TH250 behind that "radical" 4-cylinder, all dumping into a 2.92 geared 8.2" rear end.
It was an extra car we had around the house, so I sort of "commandeered" it...no one seemed to mind.

We found out that the constrictor in the filler was only spot welded in 3 places, so a hammer, a chisel and about 5 minutes allowed me to run the car on the cheaper leaded gas that was still available back then.
shortly thereafter, the cat plugged up from all the lead, so we straight piped it, then everything was good after that.

Actually, it turned out to be quite the comfortable little ride. Bucket seats made long trips pretty easy and it got about 23mpg (when I could keep my foot out of it...not that there was much to put my foot into in the first place).

When I turned 16, Dad decided to help me out and shod the car with a set of new tires...JC Penny AR78-13's! WHOO HOO!
I figure I really lucked out, because it turned out those were 4 of the stickest tires I've ever had on a car.
There's an old country road that branches off the main highway, near my parents house, and it leads right into town, where I went to school, so every morning I was "Emerson Fittipaldi", driving like a mad man down that road.
Years later, I learned that there were a group of guys, who were a couple of classes ahead of me, who used to frequently run that road. They were all able to traverse it (in much more powerful cars, mind you) in under 3 minutes (the road is about 3.5 miles long and quite windy), so they collectively called themselves "The 2 Minute Club".
When I ran into one of those guys, I noted to him that my best time on that road was just about 2:20 and he was floored.
He told me that's one of the best times he ever heard of anyone going down that road...shy of a guy who owned a 308 Ferrarri and did that road in about 1:50.
...then I told him I did it in a stock Vega and he got sad, real quick. :D :p

Anyway, that was my first "ride".

It was really bad. 1988 ford ranger with 2.9l v6. Did put headers on it and an lsd and 3.73 gears. It was fun when I was 16.

Went through high school in the 90's and my ride was an 87 Shelby Daytona, since my '65 dart "winter project " never got done (and still isnt for that matter) So here's a much better picture of me in the 80's among some of my old man's cars.

Before I got my drivers license I had a '57 Chevy 210 2 door sedan, '65 Chevy p/u and a '70 Roadrunner. When I turned 16 I had a '64 El Camino, then a '68 Chevy p/u and ended up with the '60 Impala in my avatar that I have had for 30 years now.

1929 Model A coupe with a '46 flathead out of my grandfathers '46 Ford schoolbus. I rode to school the first day of first grade in that bus and a few years after. When he retired it in 1956 he parked it in the apple orchard behind his house. When I turned 16 I drove the stock Model A from Michigan, where my dad was stationed in the Air Force, to Pennsylvania to help him on the farm for the summer and after chores at night he and I did the conversion to an Av8. I drove it until the end of Highschool and the first two years of college. wish I could find it and buy it back.

My ride was my buddy's Model A sedan. My damn parents wouldn't let me have a car.

57 Chev, 2dr post Belair, 327, 4 speed muncie, 2x4 Weiand Tunnel Ram. 486 gears in a white housing. Super Trick wheels. Traction Bars. Rolled and pleated black interior. Shackels of course. It had a cable operated gas pedal so I could turn the carbs sideways. We called it the "Waaaah-pum Pedal" A very mikeyduck arangement but looked so cool. All show no go when it came down to serious racing but still turned on pretty good.

  21. never forget that 1951 Studebaker Commander V8 - Just do a turn to the right and spin that right wheel half a block. Never could beat those ole flathead Hudson's though. Great times.

I wish it was my Buick! Unfortunately, I hadn't discovered Craigslist yet so I was banished to the Auto Trader. Favorite was my '85 Jaguar XJ-6 though.

In high school I drove the same car my mom did to high school, it's the one in the front. When I was a senior she was exactly twice as old as me. My brother was driving it to high school at the time of this pic. This was around 1998 and I was driving the black one, with a 302, dual quad intake, rock crusher 4 speed, and 12 bolt posi all out of a 68 Z-28 unbeknownst to me.

I know this doesn't technically relate but I thought it was kind of cool. Enclosed are pics of my dad home on leave from boot camp and myself home on leave from boot camp 30 years later. My grandma gave me the picture later. Some things never change, I guess.
