Well, the auctions are back in town.........Anyone going ? I always hit a couple and I make sure I hit Barrett Jackson just for the automobilia and memorabilia that is there for sale. So much cool stuff...........I go there for that and don't really pay that much attention to the cars while I am there, but I do usually have it on the TV when I am at home that week. Time to go watch the rich people play and prove that they have more money than the guy next to them............
Yeah, nothing like watching a bunch of egotistical idiots in front of television cameras, drinking from an open bar, buying cars they will never even drive, bidding ridiculous prices.
I might run up for a day,but like Kerry I will sit home and watch rich****s ruin the car hobby with inflated prices,,,,,,wonder how many wont be there because they were in the mortage/banking biz............
I've never been, but I've watched it on TV. I think this year will be VERY interesting. I'm curious to see what prices are like and if they have the bidding crowd they have had in the past. I think prices will be down and the crowd thinner. They can't spend the 401K money they lost.
After the stock market crash, I'm thinking a lot of the usual suspects will be a**** the missing. I look for a lot of cars being withdrawn before the start, and a ton of sellers being very disappointed at what their cars bring when the gavel falls.
It'll be very hard for sellers to get the money that used to be paid, especially with the no reserve contracts. It will be interesting to see how the bidders value the inventory. The FOGGER
I will be stopping by for a day or two. I always like to take a gander around there. I do expect the crowd of bidders to be smaller this year, but you never know.
Its funny to watch the rich buy those cars for the asthetic value. iots just a place to be seen and make up for other deficiencies. I'll buy ANYTHING with an open bar. I hear the real action is in the parking lot anyway. By REAL i meal real people. not the pampered. Daddy, oh Daddy, I want to go faster 2fer10,heck gimme 4
I went last year and was blown away by the quality of the cars being sold and how much money people were willing to pay for them. Not going this year but do plan to watch, primarily to see what effect the current financial climate will mean to this auction.
every year we have a get together to watch the big ****s spend there money, we eat pizza and drink cheap beer!!! its good for some laughs !
I'm going to Russo and Steele for sure. The average quality of the cars is way above most of the BJ cars. I might go to BJ on one of the cheap days. The price for admission is way too high on friday & saturday, but I do like to check out the memrobilia.
Yes, I'm heading to Barrett-Jackson this weekend to get a couple of my cars ready to sell. I'm selling a Cutl*** W30 hardtop and my pride and joy a '53 Lincoln Capri convertible. The Lincoln is probably my favorite of all the cars I own but the powers above me tell me it's time to send it down the road. It really breaks my heart to part with it. It's been like part of my family for some time now. I could use the money but I feel this is the worst time to sell it. I'm afraid I'm in for a financial beating next week. I'm also gonna run some stuff over to Ft. MacDowell in Mitch Silver's auction. This is not going to be a fun venture this year I'm afraid. Gotta pay bills somehow. Update..........one weel latter. Sold the Lincoln (sniff) sold the Cutl*** ( Yea!) Bought one car too. It was a good week after all.
If anything, I think the crowds of bidders will be LARGER than before, for several reasons - 1) Like the stock market, housing market, etc, you buy when things are cheap. There is a solid chance that prices overall will be down this year. Folks with money not tied up in other investments that have gone south, will have the money to take full advantage of a depressed cl***ic car market. 2) Anyone who has all of their money in one investment, regardless of what that investment is, is an idiot. You guys ding these B-J buyers with their money and call them "stupid". but chances are they are pretty damn smart since they are there, taking advantage of said depressed market, and you are not. 3) Yeah, the prices these guys have paid/are paying HAS made a bit of a mess of the whole hobby, thanks in part to Speed and others for airing these auctions. In turn, that makes the guy with the four-door '70 Dart 225 car think his car is worth the same as a '69 Dart GTS with a factory 440, driving prices up everywhere. These auction cars tend to be real condition #1 and #2 cars, and these are cars that you simply DON'T drive on public roads! All it takes is some uninsured illegal, or some drunk jack***, to completely destroy a vehicle that is truly irreplaceable. 4) Some cars are going to retain their value, regardless. Some will rise, and others will fall. Tastes in the market differ year to year. Anyone remember the first musclecar boom in the late '80s? The Ferrari boom in the early '90s? The Mustang boom in the late '70s? Prices go up and down. Supply and demand works in a free market. I'll watch this year again.
The GM Heritage Collection is supposed to be selling about 250 car at BJ, mostly late model stuff. I wonder how many phantom bids there will be?
I think it will be interesting to watch. My prediction is the top cars will bring good money, but more like 3 years ago good money. My guess they will be down from the stupid money thing were selling for 2 years ago. I also predict all the rest of the cars, the drivers and such will be give aways, just not enough money to go around.
I think when craig jackson starts flapping his mouth spanky should hit him with the gavel really hard !!! That will bring prices up!
I agree completely. I have three local, weathly, car buddies that go every year. Sometimes buying, never selling. They told me they are SO looking forward to picking up some bargins this year....... and yes, they drive them when they get them home. Looking forward to watching on Saturday at a party at a buddy shop.
Wow. It's kind of a bummer that people have gone to the BJ and the only thing they took away from it was the rich douches driving prices up. I'm not saying that isn't there (in spades) but there is so much more to get out of it. I've gone many times- and I'll go again if I have the time. Once, I struck up a conversation with another guy while looking at a 64 Thunderbolt. It turned out that he was the owner and he was super cool. I'm sure he could tell I wasn't a legitimate bidder, but he asked if I wanted to sit in the car! I'm pretty sure that's the only chance in my life I'll get to push in the clutch and otherwise fondle a real Thunderbolt. Another year I was walking outside the main tent. A 48 Tucker drove by. I can't imagine that I'll get a second chance to see a Tucker drive only few feet from me, hear the motor running... The Barrett Jackson can be really cool if you give it a chance.
Yes indeed, GM is selling off 250 cars of their collection. But not all are new, in fact ranges from the 20's to the 60's mostly, with some newer ones. It also includes the first Pontiac ever built (1926). As well as the Buick Blackhawk concept car, which can not be licensed ot ***led. Times must be realy tough for GM to come to this.
Ive read this is a token gesture to make it look like they are tryin to save the conpany...bad idea in the long run
I will be hitting most of them to see the cars since some of the cars there you will never get to see in person again. Just look for the coupe in my avatar out in the parking lot.
I stay at a hotel near the Pavilions for GG's and always ask if there's rooms available for B-J and the answer is, "we sold out in August". Not so in November, plenty of rooms available. As late as a couple of weeks ago, I was getting e-mails from B-J saying that they could squeeze in a couple more cars. I suspect that there will be more than a few real bargains this year. I honestly do not understand the mentality of a lot of posters here that bad mouth wealth. Reminds me of those monster.com ads where the little kids are saying that they want to grow up and have mediocre jobs and be yes men.
You are correct, it is cool. BUT, I hate the fact that it is so money driven. Craig Jackson says it is a "family" event. Then why the hell is it so expensive to get in ? What is it $60 to get in on Saturday ? Just to walk through the door ? I understand you gotta make money but the set it up so the common family can come and enjoy the event. Yes, there are some cool people there for sure but there are double that in rich, snotty ***holes. Granted, I wish I was rich like they are but jesus, what is with the at***udes ? And I LOVE the 65 year old women dressed like they are 25 with their face stretched so tight from Plastic Surgery and their rich *** hubby with the comb over and a quart of hairspray caked on his head. That kind of stuff is more fun to look at than the cars.........
I think the good stuff has already been sold, if you look thru the auction list there are a lot of sema type clown cars.... Saturday is a terrible day for a spectator to attend. The auction slows down due to the publicity type auctions, charity auctions, celebrity stuff. Also by Thursday half of the cars have already been loaded on a transporter, nobody wants their new car sitting in the gr*** lots getting fingered by the public. parking is easy on Thursday and you can see a lot of nice vehicles. I sold a car there in 07.
Exactly. Stop worrying about the wealthy, ignore them and enjoy the cars. Monday is a great day to go if you want to just see the cars. 15 bucks, not crowded. A low key day.
My dream is to have one of my project cars done and in the 2011 Barrett Jackson Auction. Time constraints and other projects won't allow me to be there any sooner. Then all I need is 2 bidders that really want it and a favorable car market..............Wish I had one ready now. I feel that the investors are ready to drop their worthless stocks and invest in IRON. I predict record prices this year on top quality cars. Only time will tell. Bob
You're most likely right...a smoke and mirrors gesture. Even if they got on average $50K for each, thats only $12.5 million dollars. That should help pay some of the $17 million spent each year on providing ****** to the employees. Update: The GM Heritage collection is looking at realizing only $5 million dollars for the 200 cars on the block. That definitely won't pay for the ******.
My Dad and I are taking his custom built Studebaker "Super Sonic" this year... He's definitely sweating about getting his money out of it, but if it brings the cash anywhere, Snottsdale B-J is it. Look for the Stude running mid day on Saturday (SpeedVision coverage)... I'll probably be driving it up on the block while Pops lurks in the shadows.
