B.A.King - If the old coupes and sedans were not cut up for race cars they probably would have been junked anyway. At least they went out in a blaze of glory!

It sure would....I'm surprised more hot-rodders don't go with the oval track theme for their cars.

This '32 Chevy has been a race car since the '50s, I forget the name of the track it originally ran, I think a defunct track south of Richfield Springs NY.

Note the singe 4 under the double 4 on the side - this was the first car Lou Lazzaro drove, at Columbia Speedway (NY, north of Richfield Springs, long gone) if I remember right.

Ken Thompson drove this car at Weedsport and around Watertown ages ago. It can be found on eBay with an asking price probably twice what it's actually worth.

This car came with the story that Wayne Reutimann drove it around 1970 or so - unusual because it has a Plymouth body. It may be in the Zephyrhills video a couple pages back, it's in Florida now and ran there in the fall. It's interesting in that it has a shortened tunnel ram intake with one 4bbl carb on it. Which is how they ran at Lebanon Valley apparently.

This one is a new build with a '36 Chevy coach body, it's legal for the Midstate Vintage club in upstate NY.

I have a few others I could post - one '37 Ford coupe that has a cage in it made out of what looks like household water pipe - if I can find more pictures of them.

There are some beautiful modifieds in this thread. I would have loved to see some of the great racing up north.

If you take this thread and the one about old stock cars and combined them, you would have a true history of stock car racing in america. At least a modern day version of it.

Man, what a coffee table book that would be! Of course it would have to be two or three volumes.

    Rustynewyorker,
Might that #11 coupe have been driven by John McArdle. I used to watch him at Canandaigua in 1964 in a Limited Sportsman coach. Flathead power, same #11, and also blue & white. Just a WAG...

  13. I loved the Richie book, great stories of how Evans and Jerry Cook would battle night after night, state after state! Sure they were battling for points but also for wins, Evans was more out there, while Cook raced for a good finish! Some of the stories are funny, because both guys lived in the same town of Rome, NY. They seemed to show up at the same track, they would play games with each other to trick the other guy going to another track. Evans had two trailers and one time left one on the side of the interstate with a modified, while he slipped out the back door and headed to another track. Sometimes his wife would go a track and Cook would come up and asking where's Richie, they were always playing games!

Aside from the Islip "pit entrance/exit" pics, the gas station images of modifieds are my favorites. It takes me back to the day when it seemed like every gas station (or body shop) had some sort of race car there. My neighborhood, when I was a kid, had no fewer than half a dozen modfieds and a smattering of figure eight cars with-in a five block radius, and that was before Marty Himes moved in!

Dover, Charlie Jarzombek, on Long Island Jam, we believe this was the day he took off to the moon shot, that famous racing shot of him up in the air and in the fence.

You're absolutely right Rich. It seemes everywhere you looked there was a racecar around. On a Saturday afternoon you would almost be able to set your watch by the stream of racecars being hauled/towed for when Islip's back gate opened at 4:00PM.

I also remember it was a big deal when they closed down the dragstrip to make the pits larger for the Saturday night crowd.

  26. Brookfield might be where it ran originally, but the current paint is from when it last ran with the Midstate club as a vintage racer.

When the Modifieds ran at Dover , it was under the ALL STAR RACING LEAGUE banner...and late models where part of the mix...
