    fuckin A...

we have known all along that financial institutions and our government are up to no good and in the end WE end up paying for it.

no matter what your political affiliation is finger pointing doesn't fix a problem.... our patriotic duty requires everyone to cowboy up and do their part.... perhaps that means save money and be financially responsible for yourself.

I would like to know why we still feel the need for space exploration....how many trillions have we spent to go to the moon ? Quit cutting education and start cutting crap most of us will never ever see any benefits from.

    (a little Aussie lingo there)
I too am a veteran and enjoyed the company and antics of your countrymen sailors. I got treated real good in Perth, I'll payback.
I have a garage and all the projects we can eat.
Come on. I like, a lot ,the way offers of help and aid are coming through.
Heck, Maybe we all could caravan to the last HAMB'ers house when were all hosed.
    My prayers are with all.

unemployment is a oppertunity to go in a new direction.

  5. Sorry to hear about your situation. I know how tuff it can be. Just a little inspiration...I was 20 years old, my wife and I had been married 3 years when I started my biz back in 1979 when we had the worst economic clouds in history. I got fired from my job and never looked back. All I had was a beat up car, no money, no parental help, wife had no job, no banker and very little knowledge of life. (The wifey never showed it, but she was scared to death)

WIth what I had, a borrowed compressor and spray gun, I took the back seat out of my car, loaded up the tools and started doing body work at used car lots, then fake painted signs for 'em (cause I never did one before) and soon picked up a striping brush to stripe their cars, crooked and all. Although what I was doing looked like crap, I still kept at it for several years before really making any significant $$ as a striper. We survived, barely.

Although we were kicked out of 2 houses, have had more cars repoed than I can count, nearly starved to death along the way, lived in our vehicle several times, among other de-humnaizing consequences, I can proudly say I have not had a job since 79.

There were times when I shoulda went to work for someone else but I'm too rebellious and independent to settle for defeat, (Or just plain stupid). After 30 years of self-reliance, raising three kids, and still with one wifey, I'm still hustling and surviving. It aint easy but remember this, If you let someone else control your life thats exactly what you'll get.

My younger Bro lives in Anderson, Mo, owns his own body shop. It's tuff but he makes it by working hard and hustling a few other things on the side...buying/sellng , taking on a resto or rod project, etc. He's a prime example of doing his own thing and surviving in a very small town.

Ask yourself what you traits, skills you have, and what it will take to start your own biz. Look for opportunities where others fear to tread or an area that is being neglected.

If you keep going after what it is you want, you'll find it.

Some of these Chuckleheads buy hotrods. Overpaid but at least the money stays here... well for the most part.

These chuckleheads will keep getting 30 million dollar contracts as long as other chuckleheads keep buying tickets.<O:p</O:p
    <O:p</O:p

My company that I worked for closed after 9-11. Stating that was the reason, even though the company was building a 300 million dollar family yacht. I was a little concerned but I had a great working relationship with my clients and no non-compete clause to keep me from contacting them. 8 yrs later I'm happier and more wealthy.

Keep at it and good luck man.

Agreed, but not many see it that way. Those people want threads like this closed down.

It's not long now before someone puts their foot down, comes on here and says, "Sorry, this is a traditional Hot Rod site, guys," and deletes this thread.

I agree - their time IS coming.

Many folks consider folks that can't find a job lazy. It's only when they're out of a job and find out that even trying your ass off for hours and hours every day, filling out online applications and hitting the streets for six months STILL won't find you a job that they change their tune. Then someone calls THEM lazy. :(

It's hard to look for, let alone interview for and land a job making a wage you can survive on when working two or more minimum wage jobs, 16 hours a day, every day.

  15. Are you suggesting that somehow we have made money off of our 'investment' in invading Iraq? How was borrowing billions from China good for our economy?

And to Amaverick- Yes, this American is pissed that we squandered our resources on an unnecessary war.

Fuck Yea!! Dave Ramsey is a ruler!
No BS, just good Old fashion common sense. My wife and I started working Dave's plan, and we just finished 1 year without charging or using credit. Its hard but way worth it.

Learn to read for comprehension. What I said was that the war had nothing to do with our economic crisis. I never said our government made money off of it. I said much of the billions invested by our gov't in the war were invested in US companies and therefore individuals. In other words, that money was (and still is) plowed back into the US economy. I don't recall saying anything about China.

Add me to the list, got my walking papers this morning. Don't really care about losing the job, losing the Good BCBS insurance is what sucks. Oh well, what do you do. Like Dave Ramsey says : You know what you can do when your debt free ??? Anything you want.......But just not with insurance. I could care less about the job, JUST NEED GOOD INSURANCE ! ! ! !

It's over 10% in Michigan(I think it's about 15% in the metro Detroit area)....but that's not the whole story. Now more than ever you have the "underemployed". Guys working part time and taking jobs that pay a fraction of what they made before. Then there are those just entering a barren market, and those that aren't eligible for UE. I wouldn't say you've got 90% of America that can spend money, because even if you have a job chances are you're making less than you did last year and the year before.

I joined the list at the new year, but working in the auto industry I've been preparing for this. I wanted to leave Michigan last year for different oppurtunities, but my wife's family and church is here so we're sticking it out. I get sub pay and health care for a year, so it's really not a bad situation (relatively speaking). I'm looking to do something new and exciting with my trade, so hopefully it works out for the best.

    Good luck to everyone!

If he can get to Houston, Doc can live with me rent free. I'll provide food and job.

Anyone else in the same predicament, PM me.

  22. You didn't say anything about China. It was a comment on the overall impact of a war of choice on all of us. We are borrowing to fund it. Speaking of comprehension, when I referenced a 'return' on investment, I meant 'the country' -all of us, our economy, our infrastructure etc. The idea that it all gets "plowed" back intoour economy is a fantasy.

  23. 29nash...gee thanks for the 'lesson', but prove it...

  24. How much is it to maintain our military outside of wartime situations?

    I'm sure it isn't free.

Thats the number the "look how much the war has cost" people forget to subtract.

There are 3 fields where jobs were added last quarter; heath, education and the gubmint. For all the talk of sacrifice the politicos do, they sure don't do without. Now the new administration says we can spend our way out of debt. That always works well! Government always costs you money.

I hope this arguing just fuck's off. Guys what is it about this thread that is just not sinking in? I am only one of the first of many to follow in my position, take it as a warning.
Even if you feel secure take precautions, more than you feel necessary. I thought I would have 6-8 months safe here with my savings and things like my car and parts that I could sell.
Over here a Nailhead is rare and sought ofter item a bog stock running one can go for more than 2g let alone a VERY well worked one, I didn't get a quarter of what I paid for it.
Tough times are all around, selling your stuff is akin to hemorrhaging money, no one can afford to pay what they could just a year ago.

You know what has made life bearable in the last few days? The support of friends here on the HAMB, great guys like Povertyflats, Mazooma, HighSpeed,LowDrag, Czuch and VonRigFink, offers of help and the support of others.
Like it or not we are all in this together, not just the US or Australia but the whole damn planet.

Guys like you 29nash really piss me off. Do you really think we have not looked for a job? I mean seriously? The flipping burgers, picking fruit etc is as far out of my possible job range as rocket scientist. Why? Because there are award wage levels, being my age the employer is made to pay me more than a 16 year old or a 20 year old, so who do you think they are going to hire for the menial jobs? Not me thats for sure!.
For the love of god, pull your head out of your arse and look around, your perfect world died long ago.
    Doc.

The HAMB is a very unusual place,I think, even for the wide open internet..I've read this thread all day, added my .02 worth twice, and just so happened to spend 2 hours on the phone today with a guy who has SERIOUS connections in Washington,DC..It was a total coincidence,we weren't talking about that shit,we started talking about car stuff..first...then he held my attention with an insiders look at where we as a country are going, and it ain't pretty...and we basically have no idea what the US gov has in store for us..I have NEVER been a conspiracy nut,but I sat still and listened to this man for a LONG time today...I think, and thought before today, that we are at the tip of the iceberg...And Doc,man,I don't know you,but I hate reading your story..All I can say is good luck to you...You certainly seem to be overdue for some..I laugh everytime I read your signature line, every post...

    Welcome to Michigan, circa 2004.

Here, we're running an 11% unemployment rate as of today. Keep sending our free-trade jobs to China...(not you personally oddrodgarage...just saying).

On a lighter note, according to the Learning Channel and their "Armageddon Week", specials this week, the world is supposed to end on Dec 21 2012, so just sit tight and it will all be over soon.
