YES!!! This is the job I've dreamed of for years, and the wife said "Go for it". Hotrods, ocean, NO SNOW, more old cars, I'll be emailing you later tonight when I get off work. I can do all the things you require and do it with enthusiasm and a great big smile:D. How about a father /son team? My 20 yr old son has the itch to learn the trade although he's into the slammed mini truck thing right now, but that's ok with me. Thanks for giving someone this once in a lifetime opportunity, Ed.

I sure could use a top shelf professional metal shaper / fabricator / tig welder that is at the top of the custom car game with many many years in this exact job. Someone who when they tig or fab a part, the cloudy skies clear, the birds and angels sing, and a sunbeam shines on the piece.

We have a great 4 man crew now, but could use some more of the above mentioned help.
A sincere thanks for all the interest from everyone I have talked to the past months.

    Hello
We are opening up our LA shop again soon for repair work and builds. I would be happy to talk to you about and work that needs to be done in LA, and remember we buy and sell classics worldwide.
We are also in the new shop in Wilmington, NC building cars, selling cars, and having a lot more time to surf. I will be back and forth between the two. It is amazing that these days that you can diagnose how an engine is running with live sound and video from across the country. Crazy technology.
    Thanks

Well do we have a Winner? Has anyone been hired from this Post ??

  8. Wil, good luck on the shop! I was actually out there in Wilmington a few weeks ago at the college there for a fire and rescue certification class but left your info at home because I left straight from work and was in a rush since I was late.
I am definately going back soon though! I will actually be in LA (Orange County, Laguna, etc) and Vegas in April! If your anywhere near Collins Avenue in CA then I will be in the area and would like to check out the LA shop of yours!

Right now I just have a couple of cars for sale in LA in Marina Del Rey in a little spot I have worked out, right next to Venice. We have been looking for a new permanent home for Sakowski Motors West, but are taking our time in the transition.

I wanted to thank everyone who has responded in the past. Feel free to keep in touch. Sometimes I don't have time to get back with everyone as much as I like.

Again, thank you Ryan for supporting the shop by allowing us to post.
I hope have added something positive to the Hamb Community over the years.

The shop has been rocking here for 6 months now in Wilmington, NC. As well as keeping a little presence in Los Angeles with a small remote location.

The sad news is that my guy up front who does all of our billing, detailing of car, pictures, computer work, listing work, answers the phone, moves cars around, office and sales manager is moving out of town to San Diego. He is a great guy who has learned an insane amount, and has been a huge asset over the transition, and will be our feet on the ground in San Diego now.

So I am looking for someone to fill the position.
****Please read this entire thread to get an idea if this my be a fit for you.
The type of person would be someone that wants to be part of the lifestyle of a custom shop, extremely trustworthy ( with a huge list of people I can call to verify ), a nice pleasant person, I would rather spend time with a square that a "super cool" person, excellent writing skills and computer skills so you can make incredible listing with correct english, not willing, but wanting to work tons of hours to be part of the team and excel, must love to work at a sweating pace, and learn a lot, etc..

Many people think that a hot rod shop is slow and kicked back, but really you have to be twice as fast, twice as smart, and twice as good as the guy at the Ford Dealership to make it. It is relatively easy to be really good in a hot rod shop, it is relatively easy to be fast, but what makes a pro is that they can do both, and make it look easy. And they were willing to put the time in, when everyone else went home.

I am really looking for someone who wants, and is a position, to immerse themselves into the shop, and in return get a lot out of it.
Read my former posts on this thread about how successful people have been who have done this.

Someone who is into the history, hobby, and love of old cars is probably a better fit than someone looking for a "job", or needing a job.

A lot of people wanting this position, are in the position they "need" a good paycheck without the 15 years in this specific field to go along with it so they could make that paycheck, Or they have a lot of responsibilities right now to be able to do a job like this.

There is not much money in it, which eliminates anyone with responsibilities needing much of a paycheck.
( unless you really have 10 years experience in this exact job and classic car sales, I would be willing to talk to someone like this)

There would be a chance to make it out to Los Angeles a couple of times a year or so to help us with our cars out there, and you could be part of our effort to get the Lakester to Bonneville, and even drive it one day. But primarily you would be in Wilmington, NC.

You could also work on your hot rod in the shop on nights and weekends. There are many many perks to being part of the shop for the right person.

Again, not looking for a pro per say, but really looking for someone with a love for what we do looking for a start.

    Thanks for checking us out.

Man, timing is everything. A little closer to retirement, kids out on their own and I'd be there in a minute! The wife and I talk about retiring in NC all the time. Gimme a few years. :D

  12. Wil, good luck with the shop man. The hardest part is finding someone that is not just there for a "job" as you stated. With times like these people are trying to get anything they can. The local city fire department and police department are hiring but there are a LOT more people this year trying out and a lot of them are doing it just for a job so for people like me that want it as a career are screwed I guess you can say.
Hell I'd move down in a heart beat for a job like you are offering and I have been wanting to move down to the beach as well... I worked at a shop doing similar to what your looking for but really it was a little bit of everything. I did office work, fixed the office computer, dealt with customers, detailed the lot cars, helped with sales, worked in the paint and body shop mostly and helped in the mechanics shop. We did hot rods and motorcycles mostly and odd things here and there so it was good because I helped run the shop, keep things organized, put cars on the internet, helped customers find and buy cars and parts online, etc.
I was thinking about moving back to California and work at a bike or rod shop but I just like the cost of living in NC much better. :)

Not a bag gig, but for anyone moving to Wilmington right now.......good luck...hard to find a descent house b/c of the summer coming, and the students(college town). If my wife could find a job equal to what she has now with the local hospital, i'd jump on it.

Here are some pics from this morning, not bad for 15 minutes from the shop.
Every 20 minutes a really good set would come in, these are the in between waves.

Yeah, so many people these days have the mind set, " I'm gona git me a job, and I will never have to work another day in my life".

We have an insane great crew now, just one guy setting off with his girl to see the world, so it would be nice to fill the spot, but not crucial.

    Here you go.
    More to follow.
Do you ever wonder right before you do something, that this is probably not a good idea.
The first time this FED has moved under it's own power since the 50's when it crashed.

We are going to get the Hilborn dialed in next.

Now that I know it stops, I am about ready for a fun ride soon.

Still looking for an apprentice / office guy etc

I have been through a number of guys the last 4 months.

It is unbelievable to me that there is no hot rod kid out there crazy enough about hot rods that wants to work.

I would have killed to sweep the floors at a hot rod shop for free, and did sweep shop floors for free just for the chance to learn and be around the metal, welders, fixing things etc...

I need a kid around 20 who has the skills that most high school kids have ( should have ) these days: come to work, likes to take pictures of vintage cars, can upload pics on computer, can write an add on ebay ( need at least B evel English writing skills ), clean cars, help out in shop, search the web, LEARN, do some filing in office, order some parts. And must like to have 50 year old dirt/greaser falling in your eyes.

I did a midnight run to charlotte the other night and bought a real 32 Ford coupe. Got home at 7am in the morning. A mad mission. Someone who wants to go along on the missions / adventures.
    Looking for apprentice.

THE CATCH is that you don't get paid like you have 10 years experience UNTIIL you have 10 years experience.

can't be on drugs or be a drunk.

MUST be crazy insane about hot rods and working on them, learning about them, or it just would never work.

This is NOT a 9 to 5 job. 24 7 Bad Pay, get used to it or being a hot rod man is not for you. Much easier ways to "make money".

I guess I can not understand it, because I am that crazy about hot rods, in my daily life. I have to live it all day and night, everyday. No balance here.
If you are not that into it, I will drive you crazy in a short time.

If you think you might be that crazy, get in touch. Only if you are looking for an adventure.

If you are almost that crazy and are looking for a job, the Ford Dealer would be a better fit.

You must be hot rod insane to work here. You must have it real bad. I finally figured that I won't be happy with anyone that is not willing to sacrifice about everything in their life for the opportunity to organize the nut and bolt section of the shop, and grub through a bunch of 50 year old greasy bolts. And be happy doing it, thinking, " I wonder what these came out of."

How dare you come to my hood and steal a 32 that I did not know about and should have. On top of that you didn't even stop by and say hey!!! I want pics of that '32, actually I should go check and see if my coupe is still there.

Haha!! Good luck finding someone. I did a tattoo apprenticeship for almost two years. I can't believe I actually used work like that and go to school full time. Had a lot of fun and would not trade it for the world but you also could not pay me enough to do it again. hahahah!!!!

I am sure you would not have wanted a real 32 5 window with old school straight axle and suspension, with an original 32 grill.... pleated old school interior...
I didn't get in town until about 11:30 pm, and was rolling at about 2:30am towards Wilmington. I got so lost on the way back. I was in the middle of no where in some field. I had to call 911 and tell them the abandoned intersection I was at to get directions I was so lost. I figured they would be pissed calling 911 for directions, but true to North Carolina, they gave me directions, and 2 different options, and even told me to call back if I got lost again.

You must know some your hot rod kid who could work the office/pics/ebay/shop helper?

I will be at The Port City Rumble this weekend, a couple miles from the shop. www.officialportcityrumble.com

Oh man that coupe sounds awesome!!!! Pretty funny you got lost and called the Police for direction. Sounds like something a crazy drunk would do hahahaha!!! As I said, need pics of that coupe. I'll trade ya!!

Good luck with the new shop. I think its cool that you chose to come over to the East Coast. I would like to see much more of the same. If only I was 15 years younger without the responsibilities I now have, your opportunity would certainly be one of interest to me. My family and I come to the coast at least once a year, we're about 5 hours away. Good luck finding someone who "gets it". It's a career opportunity not just a job. As an automotive instructor I have to try to make my students understand the difference, it's difficult to get them past the I just need a job mentality.
