...And Roy, 'This will be my last caged picture, also. corngrower probably hates me by now! But thanks to him for creating the greatest thread ever. BTW, love that Offy midget you ran. And speaking of Harry Turner Race Cars and his monocoque chassis, Ralph Baiza still runs his with a SESCO engine in the vintage division out in Southern California. And credit Gary B. again; he won Turkey Night in 1970 in his own Harry Turner #16 with a Chevy II engine. 'Quite an accomplishment in between the transformation from the Offy dominance to the SESCO-Chevy.

Roy,Little Fauss and all who are posting all these great photos-thanks for making this the best thread ever!

TDC-the photo of Billy Englehart is OUTSTANDING!

BTW-I sure don`t mind the photos of Open wheel racers with cages as long as they still have classic bodywork as opposed to the barn door look and aero crap of today`s cars.

"Got this in a package of stock car photos sent to me by Wayne Doebling, our photographer in ASA back in the day. According to his date stamp, it was April 1969, and it looks like Salem. Don't know who these two guys are, but they're obviously not having a good day. Figured someone on here would know them..."

Pretty sure that is Karl Busson in the Cedoz Chevy #17-Not sure who is in the other car-a wild guess is Don Nordhorn.

Behind Mario in that picture is Dick Lothsaw Steve Lothshaws dad in the hat and glasses and that sure looks like a young Rich Vogler with his back to the camera talking to Dick

'Always thought this was a super-cool looking car and driver combination. Johnny Parsons,Jr. driving for his step-dad, Duane Carter,Sr. at an IRP USAC sprint car race in 1970.......'Unfortunately, not too long after this shot was taken they commited "mortal sin" by putting a cage and a wing on the car for brother Dana to take to Pennsylvania for the Williams Grove National Open. Our friend, Buildy will remember this pic for sure.

I sure do,I was there that day. Offy powered Super-Sprints were rare as hen`s teeth, too.
Those old WG National Opens were great,70-80 cars trying for 24 spots, and you never knew who was going to show up.

Damn and I was worried about posting pictures with cages, now we have barn doors, fenders on top of cars makes my cage pics seem ok

Roy, do you have any "hand stand" photos? I'm sure this gang would be impressed.

'You are right on the money, mlight9! 'Indeed, little Mike McGreevy in Porter Goff's 'Easter Egg' car after winning the trophy dash; BCRA at Capital Speedway in Sacramento, March 1962. 'Ironic that you mention Leonard Faas,Sr. Porter Goff and his brother Moe, were always known to have a stable of about 4 or 5 top-of-the-line midgets at one time, as was Faas' KingOLawn Racing Team.

'As previously mentioned, the topic of who is on the cover of the magnificent book, "Dirt Road To A Silver Crown." For all these years, I simply took it for granted that it was Bobby Olivero, 'one of A.J. Watson's fine drivers. Man, was I wrong! Well, here he is, the man himself! Congratulations, racer5c! What an honor to be on the cover and like you've been so grateful before, to have driven for the legend, himself. I salute you, Roy!!!

In my eyes Mike McGreevy is one of the most underrated midgets drivers around. When Kenyon got hurt they thought enuff of him to hire him and he won the Championship for them. Then he won it again the next year driving for someone else. He did a lot of his own engine work plus the chasis. Smooth, clean, fast and hardly ever crashed, besides he helped me get my first USAC ride.

or a midget? i'm still trying to figure out how to tell? is it the wheel size or? i know 72" approx. wheelbase is a midget but i can't tell from a picture. it looks kinda like my sprint i just bought. it's just different, i hadn't thought of sprints or midgets on the salt flats or the dry lakes. i wonder if there might be some others?

There was a midget and a sprint car on the salt this year that I remember. The Midget was an old Pop Dreyer midget.

It is in the VOT class. I would think if it is a midget they would have entered it as MVOT. That is unless they couldn't make the displacement limit for the midget class.

A/FX- in oval track, midgets typically have a wb in the 60- 70 inch range with 13 inch wheels. Sprint cars typically have a wb in the 80 inch range with 15 inch wheels.
Vintage Oval Track cars running at B'ville can be decieving as they allow a longer wb for stability.

While they have never been the most popular or heavily populated class of cars, oval track cars have been run in LSR since the begining.
