Thanks Tom! Do you recall any ET and/or MPH 'numbers?' And I'm pretty sure many of our members would really be interested in any technical details you may remember. You know ... the stuff that made the car 'work' ... Dykes or .043s? Cam Dynamics or Lunati? ForgedTrues, Venolas, or (lightened) TRWs?, 4.88s, 5.13s or *5.36s<-*Wow?? etc, etc. Share what you can!

Alas, I've only been able to share but a few of my very own images on this very-enjoyable thread, but ... I'd like to 'repost' one that Bob Rice has *'tweaked.' This (the 'bottom' image), I understand, is the Rice *'quickie treatment' revision.

So, without further adieu, here, one more time, is the gorgeous McMaster & Gunning 1957 Chevrolet, 210 Four-Door Hardtop *O/SA, *at the time, 220 HP/283 Cu.In. Powerglide, Junior Stock Race Car ... in 'the pits' (and in really FINE company that particular day, I might add!) BEFORE Bob 'cleaned up' the image ...

What a sweet setup. Cragars, fenderwell headers, stance. Even with extra doors that '57 is so right-on.

WoW! Watta great read! Parham & Payne 'broke out by .001! This piece really captures the drama of splitttt-second Junior Stock racing!

  7. What did that '55 look like?? Any details? My '55 raced in the whole Suffolk/Richmond circuit and the last owner I know bought the car around 1974-76, the car had been built much earlier though as a drag car.

Okay, not a stocker but the look of Project X here shows the detail and cleanlinest you would see in most of the competitive stockers back in the day. I can only assume as I sadly, I wasn't there. Too Cool.

Taken @ The NHRA Bristol Springnationals 1966 (or 67). You can get a clue from this shot why it was called 'Thunder Valley.'

I could hardly hear for a few days after returning from the '66 event (alas, I was just a spectator) . The AA fuelers were deafening, but the 'Stahl Symphony' really rattled the mountains too! You knew 'the boys were THERE!

Wow, 11 Div. 1 cars win class, 3 of them "hometown" boys, Charlie Hampp, Jay Wheatley and Buck Wheatley! And now that I think of it, I used to own two of the cars. Too bad I never raced either of them.

65 Deluxe thanks for all of the info. The 68 class wins from Indy is good stuff. I remember the weekend-still brings back great memories. I have been looking for a source for all of that information on the mid to late sixties. What book or publication did you get that information from? Thanks Jim

Guess I could have just as easily done this in the first place but anyways, here's a scan of all Indy '68 winners.

Thanks 65 Deluxe-I was hoping there was a book out there with all of the stats. I have looked on the NHRA site and got some info but wish I could find a list of the whole era. It seems strange I have lists from most of the major AAA racing of the teens but have trouble tracking down mid-sixties drag racing. Figure there is something out there-hopefully I will stumble on it someday. Thanks-Jim

  24. There's the Patrick Bros. "In-Bomber" in H/Stock.

jimdillon- would you happen to have any recolections of this car or any other sources for '68 Nationals photos or footage?

  26. Anyone have photos or footage of Indy in '68 or how about the results of the Springnationals in Dallas 1969?

Hot Rod 28AR, sorry I do not have any recollection of that car at Indy in 68. Probably some of my best memories were at the 67 Nationals when I was only a spectator. Probably the best drag racing I ever witnessed. The gassers and altereds were still putting on a great show. Went back down in 68 with a friends 61 Vette and it gave us fits early and we spent the better portion of the time seeing if we could get it to run right. Had fun at the hotels where the cars were virtually rebuilt in the parking lots but saw very little of the racing itself. Great looking car though. One of my favorite 57s ran out of the Midwest stable-think it was Al Maynard, if my memory serves me.-Jim

Grabbed these (with permission) off of the Supercar Registry website. It appears they were all shot at US 13 Dragway, in '69?. Im unfamilar with the driver/owner of the 57 Pontiac or the Orange Crate 59

Thanks for posting these, I have never seen them before. The Pontiac I don't know. There was a '57 Pontiac wagon that was a regular in the brackets. The '59 appears to be Sterling Clough. He later ran a '55 Sedan Delivery as a bracket car. The '57 Chevy looks like Erik Claudy. Erik built a '69 Nova with a 350 and TH350 which he ran in stock classes. Brad Watkins sold the '57 wagon and bought a new '69 Z-28 which he had prepped by Tony Pizzi for G/S. After he sold the Camaro to the Wheatley Brothers and quit class racing, Brad and I were partners in a '65 Chevelle bracket car.
