i need some help here, i"m wanting to put a 351c in a 1950 mercury. I"m seeing this front sump as a problem, has anyone done this before is their a way i can make this work? I would like to keep the original front end if possible adding power steering and disc brakes. If this information has been posted before could someone point me in the right direction.

    Thanks signed forever sumped

Bronco oil pan or an aftermarket pan will do the trick...

Glad you posted this. My fiance, "DaPhantom" here on the HAMB has a 51 F1 with a 351M. The front sump oil pan sits about 1" above the front axle. I can't find a freakin' junk yard pan to save my life and the aftermarket ones are pricey as hell. Any suggestions for a guy on a budget? As in, does anyone here have one they'd sell me? (after the OP gets his, of course)

  8. You can always build your own, just get a couple of factory pans, cut them up and weld back together all the while having it bolted solid to an extra block.

I thought of doing that, but my welding skills are, shall we say, shit. That sucker would leak like a fishnet. Somebody has to repop those things for under 200 bucks, but I'll be damned if I can find one.

Yeah, they charge drug prices for those sumps.
If you find a source post it please.

  11. The best price I've found for oil pans has been at the dealer. And they're nice and new, just plug and play from there.

Kind of what I was thinking. I'll keep looking. If I find one that's priced like a car part and not like a kilo of coke, I'll post it.

would this type of oil pan be a double sump? Also what year bronco?

  15. Did Broncos come with any other V8 other then 289's and 302's? Didn't know that much of anything on a SBF would work on a 351-C.

First hand experience: I can tell you that a 302 Bronco pan will not directly replace a stock pan on a 351W. The oil pick up position is different between a 351W and a 302. I ended up making a custom fit for my 351W with chopped up 302 fox body pan.

A previous post states that the bronco pan will work if it's a 351w or a 400 i'm not sure what came in a bronco, i've read somewhere that the 400 has some interchangable part with the 351c

Make friends with a parts man at a Ford dealership. Ford has a whole bunch of different pans. I had a 460 and it seems they had 3 or 4 different rear sump pans. Price was reasonable, too.
Ya gotta check the dealer prices. I have found a number of times that the dealer is actually cheaper on some stuff.

351M/400 4x4 pan rear sump with a partial front sump for the pickup tube. From the JY, you'll need the pan, pickup tube, pump, and the special maincap bolt that holds the pickup tube. year would be 1977-1982 f150-f350's Also 78-82 Broncos. 351W, 302, etc...don't fit the Cleveland, only the 351M/400, which is part of the 335 series. Most 4x4 truck guys will swap out the 351M and put a 460 in, so 351M's usually are plentiful to be given away by them. Of course, I'm up North where 4x4's are the norm, not the exception.

I used a dual sump pan from a late 80's early 90's Mustang. Gave me more room than the bent Bronco pan I removed. You need the pickup to go with it. Cost me 25.00 at a salvage.

It might be a month or so before it warms up enough to crawl around on the ground to get it off. Jeff

Junkyard, I just might take you up on that if Kreatures doesn't beat me to it. I am going to look around here and see what I can find, I will let you know.

    Thanks again Jeff

    Later Broncos did...

That and the rear seal is larger on the 351W...pickups can be changed.

Previous post stated 351M or 400 - pans (among a few other things) interchange with 351C

You are correct....and doesn't everone always agree with you.....

  28. I stumbled upon dealers as an excellent source of parts years ago. I needed a pan for an early Nova V8 conversion and they weren't available anywhere else.

I use a lot of Chevy internal engine parts right from the GM catalog, pink rods, pistons, etc. Some dealers have a better performance service than others and cater to the hot rodders.

Found a kit put out by Ford Racing Performance, M-6675-A460, I went to ask.com entered the part number took me right to Ford Performance, $150.00, pan, rear sump pick up, mounting stud, gasket, dip stick and tube, it will give you locations of where to buy it. Shipping not included. Damn dealers anyway!!!

I got mine off ebay for about $40...I usually see them go for around 80-130.
4x4 rear sump from a 400 or 351m. Make sure you get the rear sump pick up and main cap bolt as well.

Mine is a little different than most that you will see...I think it may have been for a unique application as it is shaped different than most 4x4 pans?? (This one has an angled side, drain plug is on bottom instead of angled rear) I was told it may have been for a fox body application (OT...anyone recognize it?)...it should still work for what I need though.

Here is a pic of what most 4x4 pans for 400's and 351m's look like just for reference:

Go to junkyards and look for the older bronco's (78-79 ish?)
