ok, so l love markys ppe,who doesnt? it looks like it would be a blast to drive, for about 10 min, or a couple short passes, or till it scared the bejeebers outa me, wich ever came first, im guessing the later! i have seen a few cars built in a simmilar fashion as the ppe, but most seem to be strip only cars. my questionis this, im sure in not the only one to want to try this, has anyone ever built something simmilar for the street? iv seen some attenps but manny fail to acheve "the look". i understand that the street version would need to be quite a bit less radical to drive daily, but would love to see some pics of somthing along the same line, but for street use. any body got any pics? ideas on suspension(rear)? projects underway? iv got a rear section off a 4-door and a good cowl and doors from a 2-door, if i keep thinkin about buildin somethin like this ill never figure out how to finish the 2 projects ahead of it! thanx for any ideas orinfo on your builds.

  7. Why would you want to build something like that? UGH, traditional? Not likely, try Old Tool Rodz for this sort of crap.

The PPE is what it is because it has a top fuel dragster Pontiac motor and represents one of the most wild and experimental eras in DRAG RACING.... Wild and Wooly and on the verge of mayhem...

To build a tame, streetable version is like building one of these:

i was thinkin still resonably rank, like 450 horse pontiec with maybe 4 or 6 2 barrels, maybe usin the stock tank, possibly quarter elipyic rear suspension, add a rad, lights and drive it every day?

Bantams and other oddball coupes have been on the street for years, but the problem is when an engine gets in the way of the vision of the driver, well, thats against the law and its going to get impounded.
Its the crazy engines that make these things so popular. If you were to put a tamer engine in it to make it legal, well, then its like all the others.

Here's a Bantam from 1962 that I photographed at the Mickey Thompson World of Speed show in L.A....now if you put some big meats on it, that might be OK, but a blown engine would just make it a trailer queen.

I think this is a PPE knock off, but in no way is that a bad thing. The PPE is awesome and so is this bantam. I don't see how anybody could think that they aren't awesome. They are like an Ed Roth drawing come to life.

Ummmmmmm...have you seen some of the drag cars from the 60's?

I would say that it traditional in the context it was built in, or for you I guess the Winged Express and all the other AA/FA's are OSR abortions too then huh?

I'm stunned that some people here don't like that car. Or that they think it's not traditional.

Am I at the right place? It says "Spreading the gospel of traditional hot rods and customs to hoodlums world wide" right there at the top.

Looks like a hot rod to me.

Of course it's a hot rod, as other PPEs might have been, or not, but it isn't (THE) Purple People Eater, just more famous than the others.

My buddy Bob Bishop, TACRA,(Marana AZ), in 1957 or 58, had dirt track oval Stock-Car named PPE, a '38 Plymouth Coupe. Whatever the exact year was when the (song) was new.

hey this is the same car as that red one. THis must be a later pic of the car?

  21. There's nothing traditional about the PPE. I cant see the "WOW/Inspirational" factor in it.

Why build a knock off? The PPE was built already. It's like guys that want to build a bubble top car in the Plow Boy style. It's been done. If Plow Boy builds another bubble top in his unique style; that's great. If someone else builds one based on his construction method you're as imaginative as plain white toast.

  23. Same argument could be made for steel model A roadster bodies on 32 rails, 16 inch steel rims and bias ply tires and motivate by a triple carbed flathead. Been done before, probally some time in the early 30's. :D

its kinda crazy thats whats cool kinda like 60's drag cars! munstars car looks good to me as well as the rest of these. The ppe is the only one pictured with that over the top engine placement and chop! it doesnt have to be crazy to look good, munsters car shows the contrast.

No, there were NEVER any over-the-top drag cars built before Purple People Eater.

    Whoops...

And if Plow Boy wants to build a bubble top like Starbird or Roth, or even the Brown Neck Bandito.... then what? :D

The PPE is very traditional in a radical, experimental '60s sense. Maybe not the new and improved rear suspension, but he is wanting to drive it. That's my story and I'm sticking with it. :)

Yeah I know, I saw that one coming, but that's traditional rodding. My point was more about exteme or let's say radical cars.

Not to hijack the thread, but I find plow boys Atomic Punk build much more interesting than the original bubble top show rods. Yes, it's clear where his inspiration came from, but it's how he got there that really makes it tits.
