So we started on a car my buddy Zombie drew for us. He did a killer job, and totally got the whole feel of the car on paper. And all through a telephone conversation.

We're starting with a 1930 Model A Tudor of a strange origin. Tommy C found it behind a meat packing place INSIDE an old refrigerated truck box. I'm sure you've seen the kind. Sitting on the ground and used for storage. It was already chopped, and they did an ok job, but did us a huge favor by not welding it, just tacking it together. It's a really good specimen with not a lot of rot, so I'm guessing it lived in upper Canada or down in the south west here.

So the whole premis of the car is an early-mid 60's show dragster, but not over the top on the show part. Definitly overkill on the go part though. Tom already had a 504 stroker MoPar RB motor, and to that I added one of my favorite Weiand manifolds, the "Hi-Cross ram" and a Vertex Magneto from the Mag-Master himself, Len hughes.

On to mocking up the car for some concept shots, the Hurst slicks aren't for this car, we were waiting on the Radir 8.20x15's to arrive and a set of Chrome Reverse from The Wheelkid.

The motor arrived back from Opel Engineering with a dyno sheet that read just fine for an 1800-2000 pound car. The final outcome was 527.8 ft/lb of torque at 3600rpm and 450.7 hp at 4700 rpm on 93 octane and 9:1 compression! Gotta love the wedge.

So, up on the operating table it went. Once we got the ride height established, the body was welded via struts to the table, and the drawing and concept call for a complete tube chassis built to SFI25.4 specs. Drive train is a TTC TKO 600 (hot rods have three pedals, right?) and the ever present Ford 9" with my patented "Double Live Gonzo" treatment. A Quarter-max Pro-4 Link.

Cool. Modern Intake manifold looks out of place on this car, although I agree it's one of my favorites too. Other than that, really nice. (not that you asked for opinions:)) I love the old orange max wedge valve covers. It's one of the reasons I putting one of them in my Dart instead of a hemi. Who is Len Hughes and how would I get hold of him? I've got a Mallory Super Mag, which is really just a tad too new for my project to be exactly period correct. I'd like a Vertex. But he might know if I could get a Vetex style cap for the Mallory which would bring it in line with the period.
I'll be interested in following this project; there aren't enough Mopar cars out there other than hemis and Mopar power is more than equal to anything GM has ever built.

How is it a modern intake when it came out in '64????? It was designed for the Holleys that were used on the Ford 406 Tri-Power, which this one has on it.

I'll pm you Lens telephone number. He can build you what you need, and make it as period as you need. The one in this car is a '62 vintage mag that he had on the shelf. So it has the right tag on it. We're going to search for a brown cap, but haven't found one yet.

I don't believe that Wieand intake came out in '64. I never saw an intake with a removable top plate like that in '64, '65, '66, '67, or even '68. I think it's newer than you think. But like I said, it's still one of my favs too. Didn't mean to offend.
Thanks for forwarding the contact info!

You didn't. One of my manifold collector buddies (and that doesn't mean he's right) said it came out that early. That's why it was designed to take the 406 carbs. Could be wrong though.

Do you mean the front tires? 18x2.25 Radir 12 spoke spindle mounts, P&J Alum-I-Beam front axle, chrome hairpins, Schroeder stearing box.

  17. AWESOME!! Fantastic choice of motorvation!! Long live the big block Mopar!!!

I believe we started seeing the Weiand Cross Ram in the Direct Connection Catalogue in the mid seventies, but it looks so cool and not at all out of place on that machine.

Should be enough grunt for that little car!

That's the plan. Zombie and I are working pretty close to make sure that happens. The grill shell will be all aluminum. So far, all I did was correct the stance a little to give it a little more rake. But with the drawing on black with no road or floor to reference, I may have set it up just like he drew it, or not at all. I'm trying to be close though. We talked last night, and he's going to view the photographs and see if it's close. The seats will be different, as the 25.4 cage is a funny car style, and you have to have a head rest inside it for the driver. We'll use a low back, probably purpose built set of seats in the car, with a headrest on the drivers side.

We also got SW 2 5/8" flat needle gauges, which according to my friend Chris that collects them (SW stuff) and seems to be an ultimate authority on them, says they fit the era of the car, but that they would have come out at the end of that target era. So much was happening in the 60's with drag racing, other than the muscle car stuff, it's often tough to pinpoint the exact year of origin on some stuff. He told me that SW had a "range of 3-5 years they'd make something, but not any really specific year."

Well, there you have it. the DC catalog doesn't lie. Tommy C has talked blower, and by the time the car is done, it may just have one. Who knows. I left enough room in front of the harmonic balancer to take a blower pulley, just in case. This thing would be insane with a blower, and probably way over powered.

    Did I just say that?

  21. Sweet car....."do they still say that?" You gonna stick with the dark blue flake and scallops? That will be killer when done!

Well, Ya really dont have to worry about what ERA that Manifold is from if your useing a Brand New Aluminum fron axle beam.

Pretty Cool to see that Wedge used in a Hot Rod, So many people these days taking the easy road with Crate Chevy Power.

Just to let you know. I have a pair of OLD '60 Hair pins that look Damn close to the ones in Zombies Pic.
