I'm wondering if they do private label/promotional cars? I'm thinking of doing a car for the Jalopy Showdown. Maybe a Johnny Lightning if Hot Wheels wont bother with the little guy??

a buddy of mine in Japan had a custom paint job Hot Wheels car done up for about 3 years in a row for his shop in Osaka.........
this was about 8 years ago -

he had to charge $40 for the thing - only 1000 produced and he said he was NOT doubling his $$$

    so

be prepared for a huge price tag - a lot of $$$ up front and about 1 year lead time.......

Hot wheels does. I have a couple of them from the different Hot Rod Mag's Power Tours. They have the Power Tour & Hot Wheels logo on the special packaging. I haven't opened them.

I think this is most fitting..
maybe they will show up on May 17.

  15. HAMB dude "Abe Lugo" works for Mattel.

Also, Sean72 is in with a company that does all-new period die-cast; alot of really cool vintage stuff. He had a thread on here awhile back. I can't remember the name of the company right now, but if you do a search on him it should be easy to find.

Also, Jcruz works for Jada, I believe.

I used to do alot of work for Funline (MuscleMachines). When i worked for them, they had been developing a new, all traditional line, but it got killed sometime in 2007 (maybe I shouldn't be saying this..). Anyhow, they worked some of the stuff into their 2008 release, like a '57 fuelie motor and OE steelie wheels...they're doing some vintage drag stuff, too. I think it's all in 1/64th though.

  17. I seem to vaguely remember once reading a story of a young lady who wanted to have Hot Wheels make a version of her Dad's 40 Ford Tudor...

Again if I remember the story right, once she got the estimated costs, she made plans to sell the bulk of the order (7000 cars? 70,000 cars?) on EBay and supposedly, they made their money back because the most rabid collectors gladly paid a princely sum for such a low-volume Hot Wheels offering that they could only get from their family.

Anyone else remember reading that somewhere in the last 10 years? It was in some magazine but the details fail me a little over time.

The girl and the dad designed the 40 ford sedan as they wanted to build there real one.
They sold all off all the hotwheels they orderd and used the money they made to build the full size car.
I belive it was white with red flames on the front fenders.

  19. Thanks Henry29....Good to know I wasn't imagining things....

  20. I think if Abe had his pick it would be a custom '57 Fairlane

A bunch from the HAMB could be made into them: Evel, Plowboy (3) Fritz, Bad Bob, Denise, ect. Is a cool idea.

That is true. Sold all the hot wheels and built the real one. Here's the hot wheel. Sorry for the bad picture too much glare but you can see it.

Check out hotwheelscollector.com, if you go to the customs board there all several guys on there that will do limited runs and they do some pretty nice work. Most of the specials are put in baggies with a printed cardstock attached. Another place you might want to try is Liberty Promotions http://libertypromotions.com/ They will do runs for clubs and events.

Thanks everyone. I figured somebody here would have some idea. It's not a big deal one way or the other. I just think about the Rat Fink models I had as a kid...still. So if someone brings their kid to a show like the Showdown and buys them a toy car, maybe it will stick with them for years. Might make a cool "How I got hooked on hot rods" HAMB story years from now. Geez I'm getting sappy in my old age!!

  26. Well, if sappy in uncool than I'll be a nerd!

I moderate HOTWHEELSCOLLECTORS.COM for mattel. Most custom, convention or club cars that are in limited quanities are code 3 cars (made by a customizer). There are many placs and people who do these and they can be done on a card or in a baggie with header. Some even go as far to put them in acrylic cases. A member on the site "nightstalker" ownes nightstalkers customs he does awsome work but it is pricey. Liberty promotions also do Hot Wheels code 3's but they are not in favor with Mattel. They also offer variations in their promo runs so there will be a few cars that are different and more desirable.

At the SEMA show a few years ago, Hot Wheels had a booth, and they were offering
"custom" Hot Wheels. If I remember correctly, you had to order 5000 cars of the
same model with the same artwork. They worked out to be about $8.50 each back then.
They also needed about 10 months lead time.

The Back to the Fifties show in Minnesota has them made most every year...
You could try and contact them at www.msra.com
amd see how they do it...???

  29. Son of a *****! I had one of those 40s, picked it up at a swap meet. Was out of the packaging and a little beaten up. I cut it up to make a custom from it. I wonder if it was worth something even with some chips?
I think it would be a cool thing if it isn't to expensive. Id LOVE a HAMB version, you think HotWheels will drag out the old A model mold for it?
    Doc.
