Cool pics. I've also always admired surfing, but have never taken it up. I tell people I'm a terrible swimmer, but an excellent drowner. :D I do however participate in the land version - skating and have recently switched mainly to longboarding. I've actually been thinking of sticking roof racks on my car to carry my longboard or perhaps a surfboard. I'll actually be moving back to the beach eventually (right near Ron Jon's) so I probably should learn how to surf or least swim well enough to keep afloat.

thats whats so great about southern california, its where both hot rodding and surfing got a start, and before all of those terrible beach blanket movies, surfers were considered just as ******** and outcast as hotrodders (discovering uncrowded, previously unridden waves just as easily as it was to find a deuce roadster), if only we could have been so lucky to live in such a time. im both a hotrodder and a surfer, and couldnt imagine any better lifestyles.

Along with surf transportation, surf music and drag racing go hand in hand...

Our boards fit in the back, sideways and between the seats, no need for a rack...

Well, I think they were surfing in Hawaii long before hot rodding in SoCal got started, but your point is well taken. The two seem to go together very well.

Cool stuff. If you're interested, there are some awesome, vintage surfing photos in the Google LIFE Magazine archives.

The first item I bought for the 54' Wagon was a long board to hang out the back.....

These guys (surfers) generally don't care about the transportation, just as long as it gets them to where the waves are. If it's a cheap old jalopy and it runs, ok. The cool old cars that we see here, are for the most part, what has been cheaply available in days gone by.
Billabong, a large local surf company gets it's Reps cars (current model) serviced and repaired at my work. Without exception they are a disgrace! The surfers that I know couldn't care less about turnin' wrenches, or even keeping their cars tidy.

I'd love to have a Dewey & Weber longboard for my roof, but the 'Nomad' roof just don't look right with a board rack on it...
