A friend of my sisters acquired this painters box with ROTH and VON DUTCH artwork on it. Looking for any info, authenticity, real, fake, valuable???????????
Its current owner sent this with the pics:
have been doing some research as well, and found out a few things.
    1. The box is the real deal and was given to a guy with the last name
    Dominguez by Ed Roth himself.
    2. Some one other than Ed or Von Dutch painted the Von Dutch on the end
    of the box.
    3. Ed Roth carved his name on the top as you can see in the picture and
there is a second Maywood address that was painted on top a very long
time ago that you can just make out, that is different from the Maywood
    address on the front

I don't know if it's "authentic" or not but if it is, it's valuable.

What are the addresses on the Roth box?

My skeptical meter is pretty well pegged...

I think someone is pulling someones leg here...looks pretty crappy

  5. Let me state that I am by no means an expert on Ed's work. That said I think you have a really nice old style hand crafted wooden box,but I doubt that Ed did any of the painting on it.Possibly someone who worked at his shop did but that is not Ed's work.Likewise the V--D---- work. What does the inside of the box look like?

  6. didnt vondutch's box go for a million or so.. i could be wrong but it was major buckaroos!!

There have been pictures of similar boxes on here before, maybe even the same ones, but even by the poor pictures, the artwork is not by Ed or Von Dutch.

Pictures are small and fuzzy, and I'm certainly no expert, but it looks quite amateurish to me.

My curiosity got the best of me, so I looked it up in the R&M Auction book, it went for $310,500 with the commission added...

  22. Fritz's word is gospel in my book!............kool to have it on the shelf either way

  23. It looks to be pretty well crafted;I especially like the,"pent roof" design of the lid and the shaped wood handle. If it was hand made,it was done by someone who was pretty familiar with wood working tools. If store bought,it was likely pretty expensive.Still would like to see the inside.I have several vintage paint kits and am always interested in seeing them.

If I saw that at a garage sale, I'd buy it, but I would do so knowing it wasn't painted by Roth or Dutch. No way.

  26. My fake meter is pegged too if for no other reason than the fact that the 'vintage lettering' is:

    1....poorly done

2.....a whole lot newer and has minimal wear and tear compared to the rest of the box.

Nonetheless, it would make for a neato garage bench-racing conversation piece.

All you got to do is look at the side that says sign painter. 3rd grade cursive with a paint brush.

But.... If you like it and really it is kind of cool. What the hey. Enjoy and know you got a real old cool looking kit.

The box art looks to be painted around the 80s.Ed would never carve his name or in
initialed on anything like that. Like a few people have said it's a cool piece to have as a
conversional piece but that's about it .Just my 2cts......................
