Hi People, Looking for 16" hubcap options for use on a taildragger, what options are there apart from Caddy Sombrero's? Cheers Steve
those spinner plastic ones form autozone. Caddys are the onlly 15.....and the only option. i see new steelies in your future.
I like the look of DeSoto caps myself. They are 16" and stainless. Some had DeSoto branding, while some just had little emblems that can be painted over. Look at Desotos from 48 to 56. Relatively cheap and readily available.
What about the Rolls Royce wheel covers that were used on the Dynaliner. I think those would looks beautiful on a early Westergard custom. There was a pics of the Rolls Royce car that originally used them somewhere in the Concours thread.
Sorry, I just double checked, some were 16" most are 15" But here is an example of some that have been modified: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=2260982
Also, tail draggers were popular in the 40's right? Wouldn't running 16" wheels be a popular or common thing to do then?
I was referings to the cap not what customs were doing. Just correcting my statement about Desoto caps being mostly 16" ers.
I didn't even see your post until after I submitted my own. I was busy looking for a pic of the Rolls Royce. I get what your saying though.
I'd be interested in hearing too, although I have seen very few 16" full size hubcaps and I'm not fond of full wheel disks on a taildragger. I think that's why artillery wheels have become so popular, they're the nicest looking 16" option for a 40's car. The bomb lowrider community loves them, that's what is going on my '40 Chrysler to replace the 15" '54 DeSoto rims I have on there now. The car just doesn't look right on 15" wheels and tires.
There is a tech article in the little books I have, that shows you how to make 15" into 16" by welding/brazing the 15" cap onto a 16" dress ring. I have been meaning to do a tech tread on this after I try it myself. I think it was done my the Alexander Bros if my memory serves correctly.
I've got a 16" cap on the wall that looks like a sort of flat chrome steelie with a center bullit. I think it was from a small dually tow truck.
