This is my mother's 1960 Corvair. She has had it since I was a kid. She is giving it to me this year, so I will be driving to Colorado this summer to pick it up when the roads are a little better. It has some heater problems, so I will need to get that fixed before the Wisconsin winter hits next year. I think the rims will be the first thing I will change.

Let me know what you think.

Why? Is the steering box hard to get?

just put a '65 Monza back on the road for my Bro......do yourself a favor and forget about the factory heater ....get yourself an electric heater/defroster unit and you'll be much happier for it.....enjoy your new ride....

  7. I'd ask my mother what her dream for the car was/is.... & make it happen.

    Ralph Nader is not impressed.

I am impressed, that's a good looking car.

  10. Call Ralph Nader if you need any info on these cars as he was a self proclaimed expert on them. A buddy of mine had one of the Spiders when they came out and they were very fast.
    Later,

Nice car. I like the wheels. A buddy of mine bought one just like it new and when he got to the rise of a hill the air got under the light front end just enough that he had very little contact with the road to steer with. He wound up backwards off road. JB

Ahhhhh..memories...first car was a 61 Corvair...always loved that car,til it started throwing the damn belt off, usually at the worst possible times..wanted to torch it on the spot the night of my senior prom...may have been excessive RPMs,though..Fuck Nader, that looks like a nice car..

Cool car, was raised around those things too. Very euro inside. You're lucky she's kept it so nice.

Any upgrades like an electric fan and late alternator? Think that's #1 for my dream vair.

    have fun with it!

Because everyone wants them for their hot rods. They're real easy to reverse.

Very nice. Definetly needs a wheel change.

The steering boxes get used on hot rods, check out the one Speedy Bill sells, just as an example.

Ralph can go procreate with himself. I wanna know how much VW, and the other various European manufacturers using swing axles and/or mid/rear engines paid him to keep their names out of his book of doom.

I think they are pretty cars. They are fun to drive if it's a 4 speed. Powerglides were really turds. There were a lot of dress up items and speed parts for them when they were new. I'm sure a Google search will help you find avid enthusiasts and lots of help. The heaters did work somewhat if everything was brought back to original condition. They had a reputation for leaking oil. We called them slingers...as in oil slingers.:D I seem to remember the push rod tube seals being a problem. It can all be fixed and a fun car.

My greenbriar van had a factory gas heater that would put out heat before the tubes in the radio warmed up enough to play music. I don't know if it was available in the coupe.

  18. The heater probably just needs a new water valve?????

    Sorry, could'nt help it.

The deep groove pulleys fixed the belt problem pretty well, but you had to learn how much tension they liked and keep on top of it. Also, that damned oil leak was the oil sending unit, which was mounted in a hot spot. I think they relocated it later, but have heard of guys drilling the shroud and using a 1/4" pipe nipple long enough that the sender stuck out, and that kept the sender healthy.

always liked these cars. i had a 66 as a project for about a yr. got it for free, got bored and didnt have anything other than time invested so i passed it on for free. i didnt realize the front end was all one tub and didnt have a traditional fender that could be unbolted.

should be a fun little cruiser. and i agree,....wheels gotta go.

Many of the 1960 Corvairs had a gas-powered heater. They were great on a cold day and would warm up the car instantly. The glow plug, fuel line, or whole heater may need replaced.

The regular heaters were not the greatest, but if the entire system is repaired and maintained, it will keep at least the driver warm.

Also, the original style rubber o-rings in the engine got brittle and would crack, letting oil leak out and drip on the exhaust manifolds. The smell would then get picked up by the heating system and blown into the interior. The new replacement o-rings do not get brittle and crack.

Look for a Corvair club in your area for help with parts and repairs. The national club is called CORSA.

Best looking 'vair I've seen in a long time. Take care of your momma's baby and it will pay off! Good luck.

  25. yes , i'm sure unclee was just pulling your leg ...it's probably a plugged heater core

the first car i ever drove was my father's 1961 Corvair . he ended owning 7 of them at different times in the 60's. my favorite was a 1965 Monza 2-door hart top with a 140 HP engine and a 4-speed. drove it to high school many times

It's beautiful. Does it have a push button trans. Like the color.

  29. I had a '65 Conv. a '64 Greenbrier and a '60 coupe... I only kept one part of the coupe to use in my '46 Ford...

If you have the gas heater, you should be fine, the 60's had them...

The regular kind blew warm air that surrounded the engine back up through the car... one leak, and you'd be breathing and smelling what ever fluid or vapor that was leaking and it was not efficient system at all.

I'd pic up the book "Kustomland" since the paint is good, you could just do a watson-style panel job on it, with a set chromies and be good.
