I think they were banned because of the automatic transmission fluid. If those things blew up, you'd have a lot of very slippery fluid all over the track.

  5. hmmmm interesting, thanks for the info. George do you have any of the videos on disc now that you put them the computer? If you'd like maybe we could try and upload them on PitstopPitbull to make them look better for you. OR Do you have WS_FTP Pro? It's how I upload them to my site.

Pete, I don't even know what WS_FTP is! I have the original movie films from the '60s & '70s that I videotape with my mini DV camcorder and I then upload the video to my hard drive. I make the movie with Windows Movie Maker. I add the music and race sounds. The sound in the Trenton video is from the 2002 Thompson Ice Breaker.

I ran a Powerglide in my Late Model back in '78 for two weeks. It was VERY fast but tough on brakes (coasted into the turns), and VERY unreliable. Had to change back to a std. trans.

Kenny Weld took this car to Bridgeport New Jersey with a Transmission that had a forward and reverse working gear. Somewhere after 5 wins or so in a row, they barred the car. They claimed it had to have 3 or four forward gears. Rules just said forward gear.

  12. Anyone know which Weld car this is?

The first batch had inboard shocks. These coil overs are in the conventional placement.

Compared to todays "Bill Board" modifieds, this car speaks reams for a return back in time.

Referring to Kenny Weld's transmission, I remember him at Flemington one night. Once he figured out the track, he worked over the regulars.

In the pits everyone was grumbling about the trans. I heard guys saying that it looked like a boat trans, fluid drive, forward and reverse only.

Kenny didn't race there after that night.

Great thread!! On page 80 there is a picture of my dad's old car, it's easy to find look for the 72 that's upside down. He was going down the back stretch at the Waterford Speedbowl, jumped wheels with another car and landed on top of the pit gate ripping it out of the ground. He said he remembers sitting in the car and he thought the air cleaner came off because it was touching the windshield. Nope it was still on the motor, the frame was bent up 90 degrees right in front of his feet.
The track ran the rest of the races that night minus the pit gate, they just parked a backhoe in the hole in the wall so no one would get hurt. Gotta love the good old days!

  25. That was some nasty crash, I recall thinking that when I saw the photo. It is amazing what photos pop up here and then who shows up verifying they or someone they knew drove this or that car. So much bull ring history here on this thread,

in the very early 60s at Waterford it seemed like there was a car in the fence in front of the grandstands every week.I remember a modified wheel and axle hitting the grandstand about 5 rows up from the bottom and bouncing completely over the bleechers into to consession area behind it !that was about 2 rows infront of my family .I was right around 6 years old and I thought it was great but the folks didn't think so wonder why !Nobody got hurt and racing just went on.Walt Simmons lived in Moosup Ct. then and I remember him having several Cars stripped and ready to get the racing parts transfered from his latest wreck to the "new " stock car.

The driver in that photo of the Open Cockpit Modified #3 is Ronnie Schwendenmann at Freeport. he also drove the 333 modified,141 sedan, and #1 open cockpit car at Freeport. He left Freeport first for Islip and then Middletown. He ran the white X at Middletown. Keep the photos coming, love them.
