I'm surprised no one has mentioned the "Smokin' White Owl" or the Sidewinder in the successful rear engined dragster posts. For those who weren't there I would suggest getting copies of the history of LIONS parts 1,2, and 3. Three stunning DVDs. This is Fontana, Sept. '64. The CORRECT way a dragster should leave.

The aircooled engine in the little digger looks very similar to the J series engines use in piper aircraft ( Cubs, Vagabonds etc) they make about 55 to 70 HP depending on how they are set up. I believe they were made by continental

T.V. Tom sold the car to Tom McCourry who commisoned Tom Hannah , bunch of Toms!, to do the Wagon body for it and then it was run on the exhibition circuit. Ivo got back in it when it was later painted black with panels. It now sits that way at the NHRA Museum and Ivo commissioned a clone of the Show Boat version, non-running, for the nostalgia shows.

This pic and the one with flames are due to a small bet going on between two photogs, Lahrs and Alhadeff, on who could take a better shot. They picked out the Magic Muffler car and the rest is history!

Alhadeff took this one and Lahrs caught the first one.

I am far from perfect, that is why I seek guidance from the chapel. Getting much better with time, doubt that I will ever be perfect......My apologies to the chapel.

the cars on here deserve better than a two star....Bad rating . Maybee you need the chapel yourself. Dont take out your frustation with me on the hot rods !

peace, love and granola brother !

Some what off topic... Here is an update to the whereabouts of Tommy Ivo's Showboat/Wagon Master exhibition drag car mentioned in several previous posts. It is currently located @ The Flying A Garage/America's Car Collection, 500 East Winnemucca Blvd., Winnemucca, Nevada 89445 (775) 625-2551.

Thanks to Ralph Whitworth for collecting and allowing the public to view such immortal cars.

Here is a link where you can view some America's Car Collection video clips including 5 of Tommy Ivo himself describing the history of the Showboat along with VINTAGE video footage of it on blazing down the strip. click here- http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=AmericasCC&view=videos

I took these photos in Aug 2008 @ The Flying A. If you would like to see some more pics from the collection, go to my page and check out the album titled "The Flying A Garage". Hope you enjoy the trip... I did !

Th kart wasn't even running, according to Tommy Ivo, who was driving the digger in the other lane. They were supposed to race, but the kart broke, so they staged this and one other picture for the magazines.

  26. A buddy of mine had a Healey 100 with a 283, 3 2bbls back in '59/'60. Was Vette eatin' SOB. The Olds powered Sidewinder rear engine dragster came before Garlits. Didn't ever work too good though.
