The Mar. '09 issue of Hot Rod has a feature on the Hunert Car Pileup, and in the accompanying text I found what I consider the best written piece on the differences between street rods, traditional rods, and rat rods that I have read.
I've been hot rodding in one form or another off and on for 55 years, and have seen and done some of just about all of it.
Opinions are like ***holes, we all have one, and some stink more than others. But I feel like what pleases you is what you should build and drive. and I also feel that with the mindset of the latest government administration and it's people in congress and senate that we will be far better off joining forces a bit with the other facets of this incredibly diverse hobby of auto enthusiasts or else we're gonna see alot of **** happen we ain't gonna like!
I agree that "orange" Willys (looks sorta gold to me) is a trailer queen most likely, but what the hell, if that's his bag, so be it!
But the line between street rod, traditional, and rat rod can get blurred at times and IMO, should not bring on flaming here.

Bob , you are the funniest ****er on this site. I always enjoy your post and that Willy's comparison is dead on. I have a guy here locally that does not understand the difference. He is a hell of alot older than me. But he is so much into himself it is hard for him to listen to anyone else. I will stop know before he figures out who I am talking about.................lol..........

I dont think that small block would have been cruizing around the.......Oh forget it. Nice car though. I likey!!
Dont mind me. just in a mood to harr***. This can go on all night. But for real. I cant find any sites where there are just hot rods or just street rods. We are all one!! Just different styles. I like boxer briefs you might like tighty whities. Your not ever gonna have a site dedicated to what you like unless you shut it down start from scratch and pick n choose who joins. Than the site would just ****. Besides. You can do that in a chat room.

It all depends who's driving them , you can pick them out a mile away as they prop their cry baby's around their cars. They wouldn't know the difference between a street rod or a Hot Rod!

Wrong. anything made before muscle cars can be traditional. doesnt have to be a flatty.
flats were just more common because there were so many of them around

    By "History" you mean,
    Restored Hotrod?
    Original Hotrod?
    Famous Hotrod?
    Barn Find Hotrod?
    Famous Owner?
    Famous Builder?

    Care to explain?

    But I love flames!!!!!
I get what you're saying. But there's a place for everything. Your shoes go on your feet, your gloves go on your hands, your underwear goes on your head(if your names Kirk) you know where this going, right?
Try taking that orange Willys to Pebble Beach and tell the judges all about how many hours were spent building it,how long it took to build, how much was spent, how it was built "HIS WAY",and see how far that gets you!!!

Back in the 60's we had hotrods. I never heard the term street rod until much later. My 34' Ford pickup has a souped up 8BA flathead and the newest part on it is the F-100 steering box. It is a hotrod.
I'm building a 41' Ford coupe with a souped up 8BA flathead and it is being built as I would have done 40 years ago. It is a hotrod.
My kid taught me a new word recently. I found out what "bling" is. My cars don't have any of that there bling. Matter of fact they don't even have any paint.

So a muscle car isnt a hot rod? Im just saying theres more to this traditional thing than a 40's or older cars. The pics that where put up here where rail jobs and a willies.

But if someone would have begun the "billet" craze back in the 50's,it would be considered Traditional today. Why? Because it would be the way it was done "Back in the day",LOL.....

A hot rod is any car thats been modified for speed, simply put. A muscle car can be a hotrod, but a factory musclecar off the show room floor is not a hotrod.

Something wrong with a little debate? Makes for great conversation...

  26. I was signing in for the National Hot Rod reunion in Bowling Green a couple of years ago. The form had several categories including "street rod" and "hot rod." I knew which one I wanted to check. But just to be sure, I asked the sweet looking gray haired lady at the counter what the difference was. She said "Street rods have power windows and air conditioning. Hot rods don't have any of that ****." Hot rod it is.

You just don't understand. And it can't be taught.

Rail jobs? Firstly, I'm not sure what the hell that is, but I'm guess a dragster of some nature, and I didn't see any drag cars posted here as an example of a traditionally styled 1947-1960 era hot rod.
