Below are some pics of a recently uncovered Merc custom. I'd like to know more about this car's body mods. Such as did this car start out as a convertable? What is that decklid? Or whole rear clip for that matter? Anybody familiar with this car?
Looks very Coachcraft-y to me. I don't know anything about it but I look forward to hearing more. The fadeaways look really well done, that'd be tough to pull off considering the shape of the stock front fender.
It looks to be channeled, raising the fenders up. Just like Jimmy Summers gorgeous '40 Merc Custom. Once again Jimmy Summers was infamous for the fade a-ways for 40's cars. Wonder if there is a connection? What's the dash, maybe '39 Mercury? Maybe this is a '39, though they didn't have vent windows. I like it, except for the dip on the doors. Wonder what was used for the grille too? Thanks for sharing. Ken
Oh, the deck and rear fenders look to be 39/40 Mercury with the obvious work done to them. The front part of the rear fenders seem more rounder to me. Oh, I'm sure Rikster will have the more correct info too........
Hey Lone Wolf, looking at the pic, there's an uncanny similarity with those rear fenders to the ones on this Mercury Custom. Maybe the were used or mixed in with the Mercury rear fenders. That would explain the front part of the rear fenders being round. The deck lid is of a '39/'40 Mercury. Need a side profile of the two to get a better idea. But there is no denying it's a '39/'40 Mercury. I love the exhaust thru the fenders, ala the Westergard '39 Ford. Ken
Interesting. The car appears to have originally a convertible, as evidenced by the pinched lip around the passenger compartment above the decklid. Those also look like stock 40 Merc convertible top latches at the top of the A pillars. Exhaust is run through the trunk, much like this car... Looks like a stock 40 convertible trunk to me.
Wow! This is a very sweet car. I have to ask are you planning on building one like this or is this yours?
i agree its a 39-40 merc with buick back fenders and bumper. i still like it,even the doors cut out. here,s a side view of a buick.
Daydreaming mostly. I have a rough `39 Ford tudor sedan. I look at it sometimes and think it would be good fodder for a "sports" custom like this. I'm no where near talented enough to pull off what you see in those pics, but I know I can get the channel done and the fenders raised up on the body. I often wonder what it would look like if I lopped off the top and used the roof panel to form the rear body. Might look like***** or it could work out. I would never think about cutting up a good body, mines got some real problems. I could cut away a bunch of those problems by doing something like this. I've had this car nearly 15 years and I've gotta get something done on this thing.
Well just go out there and cut the*****er then you have to do something with it.......................lol............ just kidding. Why not channel it and give it a carson top?
Think it is a chopped and sectioned 40 Mercury convertible with some Buick parts and influence. There is a similar one in the 40 Mercury section at Carnuts.
Almost. It is a 1939 Mercury (dash gives it a away, although I have read in an article that this is a 1940 Merc with a 39 dash installed... but why would anybody take a wonderful shaped 1940 dash out and replace it with a 1939 units. So I think its a 1939 Merc) I dont think the body is section, but rather channeled over the frame and the hood was sectioned to fit. In a very similar way as Jimmy Summers did with his own 1940 Mercury. The fade ayway fenders sections look to be from a 1942-48 Buick and so do the rear fenders. Trunk is Mercury and the rear bumper Buick again. The original builder of this car is unsure. Although it looks like Jerry Huth has been working on it since the exhaust system is similar to the green 1940 Mercury shown in an obove post, that we know he built. The padded top on this one must have looked fantastic. The shape of the window trim gives a slight hint of what it must have looked. (scan by Per Webb) Old Cars Weekly has a nice article on the car.... Here
I'm not a "Lead Sled" kinda guy, but that's one HELL of a nice Merc! Everything is in perfect proportion, and just right. It's a BEAUTIFUL car that I'd love to own...
I think i saw this car in a movie once,or one like it anyway.it was on a trailer i think in the movie and i want to say it was found in the san luis obispo area a few years back?am i right anyone?
Another Indication it is a 40 Mercury is the windwings, 1939 didn't have them. Also, the rear fenders look to be 1940's as well towards the back but obviously modified in the front and on the wheel opening. i agree with Rikster, not sure why anyone would put a 39 dash into a 40.
The hood has been sectioned quite a bit. There's another old 39 or 40Merc that looks similar except it's yellow and has red wheels and the doors are cut down even more. It's not as well proportioned and this car. The grill is the same though. I agree that it's a '40.
