Your boy looks to be having fun. My grand daughters came out to help in the garage and used my roof panel supports on the 28 as jungle bars. Good test of my welding skills I guess. My daughter was'nt too happy with the dirty hands and clothing but the kids had fun and I got to visit with them in my environment. Fun for me to. And now they know that all cars are not store bought...ghost

Yeah. All the chevy threads fell off for a while. I have'nt done much myself I've got a storage trailor loaded with a large mac tool box. That my brother owned and a ton of late 50 and early 60 corvette parts. That he also owned and are now mine since he passed away. And I have been taking them over to my shop to inventory and put away until I decide what to do with them. I thought with his tool box and mine I would have enough room for everything but not quite. but on the good side I have enough tools to fix tools now. And when I get it all organized I can get back to work on the 28. From what I can tell from the board. Everything slows down on here...ghost

I got my 1928 chassis stripped down, just need to find someone to blast it in the area ( and come up with the money for that ) . Today, I'm building a mockup SBC and a trans out of carboard in order to help do some visualizing before I start cutting and welding things.

If your going to run a hood, and sides, Clearance will be tight. I set my firewall back 4 inches. And my distributor is 1 inch away from the firewall and the clearance is still gonna be tight for fan and radiator. But now it will work, with a short waterpump. I used the stock fire wall and just built a 4 inch sleeve all the way around it while it was out of the car. And welded it back in on the outside edge. It did not hurt leg room at all. Just a thought...GHOST

Well, I started on my '31 roadster, took it apart, removed the welded frontend. installed a '48 chevy pu front end I already had set up with disk brakes. Also got a replacement used front crossmember which I will need to replace. Now I need to find parts to refurbish my stock '31 front springs and bushing. The rear part of the spring has a "pointed" pin and this is wore down. Anyone know who sell replacement parts? Thanks, Joe.

Ghost28, thanks for the advice - Judgin by my mockups, and some measuring, I think I can get it to fit without setting the firewall back, but it'll be a tight fit, and will require a short water pump and an electric fan. If I channel it, which is the current plan, I need to get the engine as far forward and low as possible. It looks like the front crossmember will need some of the rear part cut to possibly clear the front pulley, and the engine/trans mount crossmember will need to be hacked and lowered (or replaced with something fabbed up) to clear the trans bellhousing.
Thankfully, the car won't be running hood sides, at least most of the time. However, its looking like it'll need the hood removed whenever I want to pull the distributor.
Don't have a donor car yet, so I could always go with a 4.3V6 to save room, but would prefer the SBC. On a tight budget, so I can't get too fancy. Still trying to figure out an inexpensive way to keep the parallel leafs, and to get it as low as I want, but can't come up with much short of Z-ing the front frame, and thats a last resort.

Joe, The filling station has everything you should need to fix up your springs. www.fillingstation.com Their website is pretty hard to find stuff on, better off with a print catalog. check out Part number RW-39, sounds like what you are looking for, it's different from mine though.

  13. I'm looking at a '28 chassis for a possible project- is there any real difference between the '28 and '29 chassis, besides the mounts for the engine?

I don't think there is a difference on 28 to 30 except engine mounts, and the gas guage hole on the back pan. All three are on a 107 inch wheelbase. 31 and 32 went to 109 inch wheelbase And I think the frame rails on 31 and 32 might be taller in some areas. Hope this helps. And let us in on your possible project when you can...ghost

  16. Ghost28,

Thanks for the info! I've been piecing together a T speedster for a while now, but the chance of a complete chassis is enticing (plus I've always loved the '29 Chevrolet)- anyway, we'll see how things pan out over the next couple of weeks (translate as, "I've got to sell some stuff to even make this happen)...

  17. Forgot to ask this, but what would be a reasonable offer for a complete chassis (minus the radiator) in fairly good original shape with old tires? I don't know if the engine runs, but will ask when I speak with the owner in the next couple days.

    Thanks again, Bill

The only difference I can think of would be the front crossmember on the 29 probably won't go back as far as on the 28, due to the inline-6, but I've never seen a 29 frame up close. I've looked closely at my father-in-law's 30 Coupe frame while working on it, and the frame rails looks pretty close, only the lower section of the frame channel is completely flat, whereas it has a slight downward slant at the edge on mine.

I believe the frame is the same, the '28 was supposed to have the 6, but motors weren't ready yet so they used the 4 cyl for another year. The 28 was first year with front wheel brakes, and the '28/'29 brakes are alike. The rear motor mount crossmembers are the same, I don't know how they did the front motor mount(I knew once, but have forgot:eek:), but the radiator, hood, cowl, and such are the same on '28 and '29. They installed a fan shroud to fill the gap between 4 cyl fan and radiator.

Bill there was a complete chassis advertised here in colo about a month ago. No motor just suspension, wire wheels, and frame. They were asking $100.00 and I couldn't get my money out fast enough and missed it. Sold in one hour. I would say around $300.00 to $500.00 if the engine runs, and it is not rusted through in any areas. If the motor doesn't run $200.00. I picked up my whole car in pieces. No motor for $400.00 but I think I got lucky. GOOD LUCK...ghost

I agree. Also, you can recoup some back with any chassis parts that you plan on upgrading, like rear axle, I sold the housing/brakes/ entire assembly for $200. Parted out, you can do better than that with individual axle shafts, drums/backplates, spider gears, etc. all selling for over $50 per piece. I sold a front hub/back plate/shoes for one wheel for $60(I kept the spindle) . They all sell well to original/purist buffs.

Thanks ghost, doing great. I've been lurking, reading most of your posts, at least on the chivvy stuff. I'm working on door window/riser/wiring/ on Hot Rod. Warm today, warmer tomorrow and Saturday! It'll be hard to stay in the garage, rather be curisin'!:D
