These stories are why I like the fact that My 28 tudor has a clear Michigan****le ..the numbers match my frame ..and i had a****le search done on the vehicle before i spent a dime building it.
For cris'akes guys. States have been****igning VIN on cars for years, some corresponding to 1930s numbers, some not. Granted, a Model A guru would prefer to have the original *xxxxxxxxx* MOTOR NUMBER on the****le. My brothers and I had two of such. The 1929 that was my Grandpa's (owned by my brother) still has that original # on the motor and the****le. It's called "Numbers Match" It's very popular for collectors, and many will pay a premium for such. That don't mean that somebody else's Model A has to be like that! It don't make a***** what the number is if the****le has it on there and it's on the car. In the 1970s Colorado had a Vehicle safety inspection. Stations that were authorized to do the inspections were also authorized to stamp numbers on vehicles that were****igned by the State Dept of Revenue. When a car was dug out of a junkyard without a****le, the owner applied. They issued a "temporary registration", with an ARBITRARY numnber. Sometimes they used the motor sn. Sometimes they used their cousin's phone number. It was up to the supervisor of the local DMV. The owner of the vehicle brought the paper, the Authorized inspector, (I was one for about a year), stamped the # on the car and signed the paperwork so the owner could submit it for a Certificate of****le. One guy brought in a blank GI Dog Tag, (he was a Vietnam Vet) and I obliged his request to stamp it on that Dog Tag. The car was a VW that he had purchased in Guam, that had never been stateside until then. As we speak, most states have a proceedure. Some call it "Assigned VIN", some call it "Lost****le Search". Some call it "No****le required for vehicles over***xx year. For Criss'akes! Just Go to your state and find out what it needs, then just do it.
Okay, zman………..didn’t mean to confuse, but since it slipped, and you didn’t understand; By ‘new team’ I meant the team (D), that’s been in charge of Congress for several years now…………………… we'll use your NON-bullshit politics as gospel from now on....; ..he, he..
that wasn't my point. point was is that isn't the original as stamped from the factory number. factory number was under the cowl and had stars in front and back. yeah it may match the****le blah blah blah i don't care. i also don't give two*****s if some state****igned a number to it. it's obviously NOT the original number as i have already explained. that is all. carry on.
When I bought my Model A at Carlisle, it had a good, clear PA****le that had been transferred from an Ohio****le. To get it home, I had to register it on site as a passenger car, which was all the****ling service could do there, then when I got home,re-title it as a street rod because of the windshield height (a real PIA!). Pennsylvania then voided my passenger****le,and hence the PA****le I transferred it from, and any past reference to the Ohio****le and probably the car's history and then issued me a completely new VIN tag to mount on the firewall. So, my Model A has a clean PA****le and the****le number matches ONLY the VIN plate on the firewall. The ways of the DMV's are mysterious.
I do not have a****le for the 26 model t i am building, but i found a website in which you can get one for any car. here is a link to it http://www.broadwaytitle.com/
Model T did not have a frame ( chassis ) number.Only engine no's. Replacement engines were blank, and the no' was transfered.
So you have like a 1988 New York registration card and a frame that should match? I don't understand what you're worried about. If you ever decide to sell the car you'll need to verify the frame matches, or make sure the frame you use has the same number on it. Will cost you about $60 for a two-year standard registration, I don't know where you get $500 from or why you think you need a****le. The last time I registered a pre-1972 car from PA the DMV clerk literally did not want to see the****le I had in my hand at the desk. It should be free to inspect your frame and verify the number on it if you're worried about it. As long as you have the frame with the number, you have the car, anyone else using the serial number is doing so illegally. I'm sure if you go in with the reg, the reciept, and your insurance cards, you walk out with plates and never have a problem. If the serial comes up already in use, then they won't give you plates and you have some work to do. Or they may give you a non-transferrable registration and let you go. As I already noted, they make it so easy to register a car you don't have a registration for in New York, I'd be amazed to hear of someone having a problem with a car when they do have the paperwork for it. If you pick up a DMV MV80 (the green form you use to register every car in the state of NY), it has about 5 choices to check off for body style - 2-door sedan, 4-door sedan, suburban/station wagon, convertible, or pickup. There are no other choices. There may have been in the past, but not in at least 20 years. A tudor = 2DSD; a coupe = 2DSD (as shown on the window sticker). Hell, I saw a '25 Franklin Touring at an AACA show over the summer that said "4DSD" on the registration instead of "CONV" for convertible, they have no option to check off for a touring car and I'm pretty sure most DMV clerks wouldn't give a***** either way if they even know what a touring car is.
The whole, entire point of this thread and many others like it,is GET A****LE BEFORE YOU BUILD THE CAR!!!!!! This cannot be stressed enough. You might be fine with a Broadway****le-and then again, you very well may not.Do a search, read the threads. Most DMV folks just want to move the paper on if it's pretty much correct. but PA govt employee wages are being frozen and you meet some DMV'er on the wrong day and you've gone to****le purgatory, doomed to submit and get rejected over and over again. Please, just get your****le first.
I thought the point of the thread is the OP has a good NY registration for his car, but is afraid to actually try to register it because it says "2DSD" on it instead of "Coupe" ...
Why would you need to buy a model a****le? Are they making you register models in New York now?!?! Damn tree huggers.
I wasnt able to get a****le before because when i got it i bought the frame and body off of a guy who didn't have one. I have a bill of sale for it and figured that it would just be easier to use Broadway to get a****le for it. Anyother suggestions on how to do this an easier and more effective way? Any info would be appriciated.
Went to the DMV today to re register my daily and inquired about my situation. Looks like everything is A ok with the number on my frame according to the dmv. I have 6 forms to fill out pay tax,****le fee, and registration, make a rubbing of the number and I'm good to go. Pain in the**** but better than taking the risk paying $500 -$600 for a****le I'm not sure about. I'll end up about $250 out of pocket total and be able to sleep at night like Von Rigg said.
Last year I got Model-T for Illinios and New York state reg. said it is 2DR. No more coupes, roadster etc. It is 2dr, 4dr, truck ect. Jeff
I had not seen the last couple of posts. First off I was VERY specific to the seller that I wanted an open registration for this car. He****ured me he had owned it for 20+ years and this was not a problem. The registration he handed me was from 1953 signed in both the buyer and seller spot. The make line said -Tudor- not 2dr sedan. The registration did not match the frame numbers and I was afraid he had used the numbers to register his coupe when he built it. I should have walked but I didn't so too late now.
That is not true in all cases, on my car it is quite visible below the firewall on the drivers side and it was verifyed by the Cal DMV and again in Michigan by the State cops when I moved here. Thats Just my experience. <HR style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #e5e5e5; COLOR: #e5e5e5" SIZE=1><!-- / icon and****le --><!-- message -->Coupster I presently live in Maryland and bought a farm in Vanderbilt Mi. to retire on . I plan on bringing all my old cars and trucks with me . I have read Michigan DMV siye and did not see anthing about getting the cars/truck ID #'s inspected . Was your case the exception ? I just want to be prepaired Thanks Dan [/QUOTE]
What he said, can't preach it enough. I have transferred NYS registrations with no problems (in other states) but I always accompanied it with a letter from the director in NY stating that was legal ownership because they aren't going to believe you in another state. Since model As had the only visible serial number on the block and dam few of them even have the original engine, you might want to do your homework on that before you run into a snag. One thing that you may run into is they require a bill of sale from the person who sold you the car, and technically that should be the person whose name is on the****le. If you are not comfortable getting a little creative there (as in breaking the law and fabricating a bill of sale), then better stay away from that whole process.
So i am a little confused in how to license my rat rod i just built.... i did not have a body to start with so i made my own i bent up tubes and sheet metal'd it it looks alot like a 1928-1933 model a sedan i need to get in licensed but i dont want to go through state patrol. i was wondering how i would go about this... thank you, paige
Best way to find out if someone is using your vin number is to go to the DMV and have then do a search of the vin number. If you need to give them some***** n bull story about you are thinking about buying the car and want to know the history on it. They charge about 3 or 4 bucks here to do it. I think they do things different in the east than here here if you don't have a****le in your name you cannot register or liscence one.
Every state is different. You should be able to find information on line for your state-if not,hit up the AAA in your town. You might get the right person at the DMV ( ), but I would instead supply your state representative with a written question about what you want, then ask them to get the information from the DMV for you. That is what they are there for and the DMV ain't likely to screw with a politician responsible for their budget.

In the state of Washington: Registering custom-built vehicles takes quite a bit more work than registering ordinary cars. However, both types of registration are handled by the Washington Department of Licensing (DOL). If your vehicle is homemade,****embled, rebuilt, a street rod, or a kit vehicle, you'll need to add a certificate of inspection to the list of paperwork needed to****le and register your creation. VIN Inspection Before you can****le and register a custom-built vehicle, it will need to undergo a VIN inspection by the State Patrol (you'll need to make an appointment). Washington will want to trace all vehicle identification numbers that appear in your new model to make sure no stolen parts were used. If you****embled or rebuilt the vehicle, or if you've modified an existing vehicle to the point where it needs to be registered as reconstructed or refurbished, then you'll be asked to provide documentation proving the ownership of the car and its parts. Bring along all bills of sale for every major component part you used to build the vehicle, as these will be reviewed. If your homemade vehicle doesn't have a VIN, the State Patrol will****ign one and even attach the VIN plates to the car. In the case of a kit car, which combines a chassis with a different frame, engine, and body parts, the State Patrol will use the VIN on the chassis as the vehicle's VIN. There is a fee, collected by the DOL. And 10paige17, do an intro as requiered, or at least put some real info in your profile - and you'll learn real quick that Rat Rods are not tolerated around here. Buying a****le to use to****le a car that it was not originally intended for or altering a****le in any way is against the law in any state. It is covered by federal law. You do time in federal prison as a rule for this minor infraction of the law. There have been a lot of fellas that sell****les suitable for framing for dislay purposes only. I am not sure about the legality of that but I do know that if you are only using it for display purposes they will leave you alone if it is illegal.
You won't know if that****le is good until you try and transfer it. More and more states are checking on that. Without a VIN check it is not known that it is good. we crush rat rods...
