i LOVE those cars,,,but i believe you did a section job on the hood/deck,,not pancaked (i do love the cars though)....pancaking means basically cutting the hood or trunk so it lays flat (like a pancake), and welding the curved portion to the fenders or in the case of a decklid, to the quarters,,,a good example of a pancaked hood is shown in the pics of the barris aztec posted by twochops.....

i think sectioning is actually much harder to pull off than pancaking.....especially with all that flat metal that's prone to warpage...

  17. Here's the rear.But I don't think you would call it pancaked,just rounded.

pics I got from the HAMB and I'm almost positive the Trendero would have had a pancaked hood (if it ran hood).

  19. Good question.Did it have a hood?

What I meant was the engine compartment was shaped like a car with a pancaked hood. That usually meant from the grill, the body went up and over past the radiator and was all one piece, molded into the fenders. I don't think the Trendero ever had a hood.

any side shots of this one?

  24. So what you are saying is to cut the leading edge off and weld it in as a filler panel...right? That's how it looks on the Aztec pics.

Jim, my Olds has a pancaked hood, and my Chevy has a mildly pancaked trunklid.
If you want to see a radically pancaked hood, look up the LaJolla, Harry Bradley's old car, now owned by Jack Walker.
I'm at work, and don't have pics here...sorry.

    Hey,

A true "Pancaked Hood" will have metal all around it, think trap door in middle of hood panel, or like a '61 Lincoln Continental or '63-'66 Chrysler Imperial's hood panel.

I'd much rather section or pie cut a hood than pancake one! A true pancake job is gonna require a flange be built and welded all around the inside of the opening you've cut to give the new hood panel something to sit, seal or ride on, once the panel is closed. All of this welding will be in the area of the hood panel that's low or no crowned! Not a biggie if your squirt gun welder will dial down so you can control heat. A much tougher job if you still do most of your welding with a torch.

Here's a photo of the trunk on my 51 Studebaker 4 door sedan. Originally it went all the way down to the gravel pan. It was cut off and a new panel made to replace the cut off portion with the license plate being frenched in. My friend also built a new channel around the opening and added a rubber seal.

I call it "pancaked" but don't know if that's the correct description of it.
