This is one my favorite photos, even though I never saw him run, I love this shot of both of his mods. Always sharp looking cars.

Here's a unique one for you Rich, Paul McElearney one of the best wheelmen from Long Island, but he didn't do it a modified, he was an amazing street stock and late model driver! Used to run on rails around the track.

How about this one from the GNRS. Ran in a "outlaw" super modified class in the 50's & 60's with no engine limitation. It has a blown SBC.

  21. Great thread! Wish I had something to contribute, but don't right at the moment. I'll have to go through the boxes of old photos the next time I visit my folks and scan a few of my great uncle Don MacLaren's race cars. Wish like hell I knew where any of them were today!

Hey Pete, your comment about Paul McElearney...He was the most under-rated of the Long Island drivers and could have wreaked havoc in the mods had he gotten a quality ride. He did a stellar job in the Outlaw late models wheeling the Resner 60X up in New England. Besides a great driver, his stories were the best. I used to 'bout bust a gut listening to him tell a story.

His brother Joel owned the Danny McNamara #98 mod, back in the 70's.

Your uncle is Don MacLaren, the super modified legend?

  24. Not uncle, great uncle, but yes, my name is Ross MacLaren. My grandfather was Lloyd MacLaren, Don's brother. My father, Ricky (Lloyd's son and Don's nephew) worked at 5D's Welding in Tewksbury, MA, one of the extended family's businesses, back in the late 70's/early 80's at the tail end of Don's racing career.

The 76 on the car hauler, the owner was Pete Chesson. The driver was Stan Ploski. Picture from Flemington. That car was unique, such as helicopter clevis on the front inboard coil overs.

Cool ! Dig up the pics; I'm sure everyone would enjoy them.

  27. I would! Funny how a lot of racers take so much serious but when you really get to know them, most of them are rip riot! They like the stone cold look, but inside they are just big kids! Gotta love it!

Fred Harbach was the best and threw the best pit parties. His saying was "Win or Lose - Fred's got the booze"

Here's the only picture of one of my great uncle Don MacLaren's race cars I seem to have on my computer. As stated in one of my previous posts, it bears the name of his welding shop, 5D's Welding, where my father worked with him for a while in the late 70's-early 80's. Hopefully I'll find more when I go visit my folks on Sunday and get to dig through their photographs.
