When I first came aboard I was contemplating a S10 frame swap. Mostly because I was tired of hunting down parts. Then i got a case of horsepower envy and wanted to pu a SBC in my project. So I started to think swap the frame, brakes get updated, front end gets updated, it may be easier to swap the engine, and so on. Then someone on the thread said the above quote. I started to think, I bought this car to be different, my orignal intentions were to rod it like it would have been done by some 20 something year old in 1957-59. If i put an SBC in it it will be like everyone else's. So I took a few days pull all my parts boxes out, laid them in front of me and decided he was right. And I can't thank him enough. This is the engine before and after, still need to do linkage and getting some stainless fasteners for the head. But its pretty much all there. This site is the best place anyone with interest in rods can find on the web hands down. So thanks to everyone who has answered my stoopid questions in the past.:D

Okay one more question. Rewiring it to 12 volts, what is teh best alternator to use? One wire or three? I want to use an internally regulated one.

    Thanks again,
    Jack

    right on! looking good.

  6. If I had all thos parts laying around in boxes, I would have done just what you did too. Great looking mill, you WILL be a happy camper. Ditto for one wire.

  7. Wow, Once you were lost, but now your found... Glad to see that that you saw the light...I'd like to thank the 350/350 quote guy also for all the good he's done for the world. Some times just a few words can change the world into a better place.

Just for the record, If I was walking by your car and saw that old stude six hopped up with two pots, Id stop under your hood and stick around for a while as oppossed to the 350/350 which would just have me shaking my head looking for another car to admire. Good luck with the rest of your build....

The problem with 1-wire is that it doesn't really adjust for load very well. I don't pretend to understand it all, but the idea is that a 1-wire will have 13.8 volts at output, while a fancier (OEM auto) one will have 13.8 volts at the regulator, which is downstream from the alternator and should be a more accurate reflection of your car's electrical load.

Where would a 20 something year old find an alternator in 1957-59 ? :D

    ..nice looking engine.

It is great to not see another 350/350.

  12. A one wire unit is easier to connect, no doubt about it. However, a three wire, because of its design, is better (or should be depending on how it's connected) at determining what the voltage actually is at some distance from the alternator....the one wire units regulate themselves by looking at the output voltage, which hasn't had any reductions from whatever's going on down the system.

One wire units have been used in a lot of situations with absolutely no problems; they're easy to install, and they work well, most of the time. But there are some situations where they don't do so well. Some reading for ya: http://www.madelectrical.com/electricaltech/onewire-threewire.shtml

That is totally cool! And yes, a 1-wire alt. would be easiest. Just one wire from it to the battery (+). You can try to mount it down low if possible so it won't stick up on top of the motor and scream "Here I am!" as soon as you open the hood. Even though my 56 Chevy has a SBC/Turbo 400 combo, I also tried to keep the vintage lood by using Offenhauser valve covers and avoid the store bought look.
Being a couple hours south of the Stude factory, there are always plenty of Studes seen around here, even in the junkyards there are some old ones.

We call them the "709 club".... you know, 350, TH350, and a Ford 9 inch.... 350+350+9=709

As far as alternators go, the one wire is more expensive and not always in stock where ever you go. Not something I'd want to wait a day for an auto parts store to get when I'm several hundred miles from home.

I like the GM 10si/12si series of alternators, always in stock, much cheaper, and always done me well.

    Just my two cents.

HAHA. I know. I looked at the powergen alternators to keep the generator look. But I can't justify spend 300 more on just a case. Besides, budget budget budget.

Thanks for the info and the kind words. I'm really happy with how it came out. Well if it looked like shit, I guess i would have kept it to myself!:D

There has been a 1960ish Lark coupe in CT for years running an Edmunds head on a hopped up flat six. The car has been on the road for about as long as I can remember-at least 15+ years. Way before this style was popular.
Cool setup, and yes, you will likely be the only one with it at a show (unless it is a Stude show).

Good choice! Went through the same thing myself, looking back I can't believe I ever considered putting a Chevy in my Commander but now I have to find something to put the Chevy in.

What's wrong with a generator...find a guy in a rural area that services tractors, and likely he will also rebuild generators...tell him what it is and what it's for and get your generator rebuilt on the cheap...

I was thinking of doing this. But I have already taken the old wire harness out. Mice apparently liked the taste of old wiring. After I had this shipped up to me, say about two weeks, I went to get a wrench out of my tool chest and I had this giant nest in it! Between that and the spiders it was crazy. I was just going to use a new wire harness and do it that way with the 1 wire. I didnt want to deal with regulators and such. Anyone think it would be worth it to go generator, even tho the old harness is out? Or how about would it be cost effective?

  28. I think you have chosen the best route with keeping the flat-6. You have done a great job. You should be very proud. One thing to consider about your alternator is location. With all that hard work in making your engine look as good and as period as you have an alt will look a bit out of place. If you decided to use one put it down low and close to the block, out of site.

I use generators in 3 of my cars (..2 of them flat-6s..)and have had great luck (...now I did it...) with them. All of them have been rebuilt and look perfect.

I know an alt is a good choice but again "there is more to life then an alternator":D

it depends how much you care about being period correct...i rewired my car and put an 1 wire alternator on it just because it was easy and fast, when the time comes and when i clean up under my hood and when i rebuild my flathead...a generator will be going back on.

There are some good speed parts for it out there !
Keep us posted with the engine !

    THANKS AGAIN ! :)
