California needs a wholesale cleansing of it's unlimited supply of liberals. I would hazard a guess that 95% of the really stupid laws are put forth from the minds of the liberals, who have nothing better to do than fuck with the lives of the rest of us.

you would be nieve if you believed this kind of law COULDN'T be passed. these politicians and special interest groups fly bullshit laws in under the radar ALL THE TIME. if you do not believe it COULD happen you are seriously diluted. this government is no longer "For the people"...

...ok. i need to leave this thread. i feel dirty just talking about politics.

It's incredible how what Rdhotz explains goes on to people concluding that people will not be able to sell their car themselves.

I wonder how some people make it through a complete day sometimes.

  6. Just California? It's getting so bad in Washington that it will soon be tradtional to not pay or cheat on your taxes.

Is that so we can make CA as nice of a state as PA? Maybe some day we will be as good if we just try hard enough. Last time I checked, I didn't hear of any big rush of people wanting to move to PA despite all the great laws, or lack of, you guys must have.

But, anyway, the whole ideal of this apparently proposed law is so far off the charts, it can't even be realistic and no way that is going to fly if it is - no way in hell.

  14. Of course, they'd be the 9th or 10th if they hadn't spent everyone's tax returns on doctor visits for toenail clippings for illegal aliens. Then you wonder why someone would want to try to evade paying any taxes they possibly can in your state? But I'm getting wildly off topic, sorry.

They have one of those laws in this state where you can only sell X vehicles without a dealer license. Trouble is, if you never put it in your name, or the car doesn't have a title, there's no real way to know. And from what I've been able to gather from the DMV, you can't put a non-title car into your name unless you put plates on it. They raised the title fee to $50, so I'm that much less likely to put a newer one in my name unless I'm going to drive it. And they have a form you can use to dispose of junkers at the scrapyard so that's not an issue.

I kind of think this thread is beating a dead horse, unless the state can raise revenue from that law somehow, it won't go through.

Nice thought, but CA people pay out more in Fed taxes than they get back. That is how other states who generate very little income can stay afloat and brag about their low taxes. We are paying for their asses, not the other way around. But, that's cool, we're all in it together and you're welcome.

And by the way, I don't dig bashing illegals. Sounds like you don't actually know too many unless you are referring to good old American felons of which Upstate NY is full of. Most all the illegals I experience are some damn hard working people who will do pretty much everything to stay away from the police for obvious reasons - not having them coming to their house every other week trying to deal with their meth problems like a lot of non-illegals we all know all to much about. No group is perfect, but illegals are far from the tax dollar sucking scum that a lot of America seems to want to think they are. I bet your neighbors in upstate on average easily suck more tax dollars than the typical illegal, easily. And not only that, a lot actually pay taxes which they will likely never see any return on other than the boot out of the country when we have gotten our use out of them and it is politically advantageous to make a show of it.

That five car rule has been the norm up here for years. Probably because of the gipsy wholesalers (a fixture of the used car business for decades, and generally honest if they knew you and liked to do business with you). Long before Russian immigrants came here in droves ten or fifteen years ago, and large numbers of them started stealing anything that wasn't tied down, hustling it into containers, getting it past the customs people (and pissing them off), and sending what was legally once yours outside our borders to parts unknown.

Although this could be the typical politician knee jerk reaction to specific outraged citizenry, it sounds like in this case that they are actually trying achieve order out of the chaos.

My license and bond and insurance and dealers plates average about three grand a year, and don't forget things like the DBA (assumed business name) fees and mandatory annual instruction class hours the state hits you up with just for good measure. Then you get to add the county and/or city licensing location (got to have a location, and it needs to be in a commercially zoned, often car lot specific area) fees (and rent or payments/taxes) on top of that. At that point you're in business as far as the state is concerned, now it's up to you to go out and buy an inventory, and decide if you're a one man operation or if you're going to hire employees to help you run it (and add in all the costs and grief that entails).

The bottom line is it's up to you how many cars you want to sell and how you want to go about it, same as it's always been.

What happens if I have three restorable cars, but with no registration and insurance? If I offer them for sale can they be impounded?
An overzealous cop, city inspector, or pissed neighbor can turn you in!

  18. Got a $50 ticket for having a for sale sign in my window in Chicago. The slob-lot owners used to line 'em up at all the intersections with cell phone numbers on the sign and pretend to be a private party seller. They would stay there for weeks.
I've sent several letters to my alderman and the editorial depts. of the newspapers suggesting a private seller permit, like the garage sale permits we have to have. Just provide proof of registration and be legally parked. No reply.
Illinois limits you to 6 cars a year sold as a private party. Seems fair to me.
Too bad the many have to suffer the sins of a few.

  19. My brother was looking to get into a small dealership. Besides the classes, etc, which are fairly cheap, the bond was around 8-10,000.
Then you have the DBA, use permits, rent, insurance, dealer plates ($175 ea) etc.
To have that place would cost close to 4-5,000 a month.
that does not count smog fees, license fees on the cars, any prep or repairs. Or buying the cars, which cost more because of the curbstoners bidding them up.

meanwhile the illegal places are still running full bore stuffing all those expenses in their pockets.
Illegal aliens don't run them all, but some do. They are not as proper around here like they must be in Berkley.
They and all the other the other tax dodgers (citizens) that collect welfare, etc, and flip cars or whatever are the reason for this law.

And to you guys that keep saying this wont get passed must not read what you are looking at.
    It is already the law.

I'd just like to see it implemented, like all the other laws on the books that don't get enforced.

here in cal. if you buy any car with the intent of reselling it for profit you are a dealer, and the state wants a cut...$$$...so now you need a license ,bond, building, sign, ect:
the new law is to stop unlicensed dealers, now the cops can make the call and who knows where that can lead!

Well, I have never in my life been successful or determined enough to sell a single car for profit, let alone several in a year, so I guess I won't need to worry about either one of those problems. I am almost always lucky enough to buy high and sell low.

  22. What ever happened to free, white and 21? Oh, sorry I forgot what year this is. It is still America isnt it? Or is that all but gone too?

  23. Man this thread has gotten nasty. So now it's my turn.

You Guys better check the laws on the books in your states. This is no new thing cooked up in Cal. They copied other states. As far as our laws, I'll take 'em over other states any day.

Lived in Michigan, Ohio, Texass, NJ and NY. Left them for good reason.

I've never bought snow tires. I Drive my coupe year round. My house and taxes are cheaper then the same place would be in NJ or NY. Michigan and most other states home taxes are off the chart when ya looked at what you pay per $1k of value. ours are less then 1.25% of the purchase price.

Democraps and Repooplicans are all nuts regardless of the state their in. Liberals or conservatives are after your wallet.

However, if ya think Cal is so bad, please, please stay where you are. We are doing just fine without you here.

Oh forgot about the illegal issue. Don't care how good you are or where ya came from, if you came here illegally you broke the law.. Get the F outta here. My family came here legally so can they.

you all seem to have have forgot, there is a reason it's called "The Socialist Republic of California" and has been for 20 years or more. if you look at all the laws that don't do anything, but make the state spend money (gun laws are a perfect example), you can see why we are 43 billion in the red. there is only one reason for this, this state has been run by democrats for along time.
now, i am not saying it's only there fault, but if you look at all the gun laws for instance, you will see, their names are on every one of them.
in other words, passing gun laws that are passed to stop crime doesn't due anything, but it makes the state another bureaucracy with staff that has to be paid for. i e, cost to the tax payer for nothing that gets accomplished.
remember, the only way a state gets in the red is, they spend more money than they take in. kind of like the hole country does.
also, if you think people are actually running to Calif, you haven't seen the latest stats.

    check list for bashing:

    1. entire state of CA - check
    2. illegals - check
    3. welfare moochers - check
    4. liberals - check
    5. conservatives - check
    6. a few other misc. states - check
    7. now gun haters - check

Wow, this thread is getting good.

All because of some misunderstood "new" CA law that actually turns out to make some sense and has apparently been on the books for a long time and that many other states have as well and maybe even worse versions of.

Sounds like another perfectly good reason to trash talk CA. Well, don't worry, I am sure with the next earthquake, we'll just sink in the ocean and you won't have to worry about us anymore. Never mind and carry on unless someone wants to throw in some other completely off the mark bashing of something else they hate about CA, any laws in general or whatever just for good measure.

"Consider this, firearm sales are already controlled like that. I would imagine what they are looking at is, you would still be able to sell your car to your buddy, but you would have to accomplish it thru a dealer. Think of the savings they would have by not operating as many DMV offices. There would be no more sales tax revenue losses by people putting down bogus prices. And best of all no sliping thru the cracks on emissions testing. Now I am not saying that this is fact but coming from Calif I sure could see it happening."

Bingo....Calif is in one incredible financial mess...ANYTHING is going to be considered to streamline the budget......anything.....dont count out anything. "Desperation" laws could passed right under our noses...
