What was your first hot rod?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 2many projects, Feb 4, 2009.

  1. Nothing newer than 1960 please.
Really want to keep this thread in the 30's 40's and 50's cars and trucks.
I guess bikes would be okay too.

  2. In 1951 I bought a 30 A cpe for $25.00..cut the top off,channeled it and installed a v-8 60.....Looked like todays R Rods.......Not a pretty sight to say the least...

  3. Don't know if this would necessarily be a hot rod or not (it was to me then!), but the vehicle I'd call my first hot rod was a 1950 Ford Club Coupe that had a modded V-8 flattie, with a 3-speed and O/D. Had the coolest-sounding exhaust on it - dual exhaust with the old-style Thrush straight mufflers and chrome tips. It had the single carb on it. But, it had a mild cam in it that really woke it up.

Owned it for one day...not because of a wreck, though. I was 17 when I bought it for just $300 from a neighbor up the street. I had cash that I had saved for a different car that I wanted ('64 Impala), but this deal was too good to pass on. So, I drove it home and parked it in the driveway, anxious to tell my Dad what a stellar deal I made on it. Plus, HE had a nearly identical car in 1954; same color and everything! A guy drove in the driveway as I was cleaning some stuff out of the trunk, and asked if it was for sale (the FS sign was still in the window),and I said I'd just bought it, but said that $1,500 would let it go! Of course, this guy said nothing, but reached into his pocket and paid me $1,500! Well, shit. He came back just as my Dad got home, and he drove the Ford home with his wife following. Dad asked abouth the car, and I told him the story. He congratulated me on my business prowess, and took a hundred from me in the process!

Me? I went over to where the Impala was and bought IT!

My first one was a 1953 Merc 2DR hardtop with a 430ci lincolin motor, a real scary ride. I worked in a wrecking yard at the time(1961)and parts were no problem. Wish I had some of the cars I helped scrap out.

    First car? Hot rod?
    Probably the 36 Chevy sedan.
Paid $50.00 way back when- lawn chair for a seat (pipe clamps holding them down). No mufflers, Brightest yellow you ever saw. Mom hated it but hell- she hated all my cars back then.
Looked like this but not near as nice.
I'd like to have it today.....for 50 bucks!

34 Dodge sedan running 265 Hemi (Aussie 6 cylinder) aand 3 spd. Swapped it out for 318 & auto (dumb) then swapped that for 360 & auto. Then I sold it due to a business failure. Pissed me off. Neat car.

I bought a 32 Ford 5 window in 1960 for $75.00. Had it for about 3 years. Put in a tired old flathead and had a lot of fun. Too bad there aren't deals like that any more.

47 (or 48) Merc coupe - all grey with stock interior, nice V8. Bought it from a couple of old folks (of course I was only 14+ at the time - they were probably all of 35 or 40).

First thing was dual exhaust, next was floor shift at same time that the hubcaps came off - and were replaced with Chrome reverse wheels and baby moons. That used up every stinkin' dime I had...so that was my driver till I turned 16.

A black primered '56 Chevy I bought for $15.00 in '62 when I was 16. 4-Door with a 235 & three on the tree. No brakes or tires, but I learned how to install new lines, wheel & M/C and bought four used tires at the local junk yard. I installed a floorshift and called it my hot rod.

I drove it for a year, but never took a picture of it. Sure wish I had......................

No joke, when you are a punk kid with no money, you take what you can get. Would you believe I had a 1959 Fiat with a flame job?
