No, but if they didn't have that job, where would they go?

I like to know where they are, so I can avoid them...

  2. You want fun, try ordering at a grocery store hot counter something by fractions of a pound -like 2/3 of a pound of mashed potatoes. See how many of the kids actually know that's .66 on the scale. I've had a couple that just had no idea how to figure that out, and it's like 5th or 6th grade math.

I don't care if it's not spot on .66, but .50 or .75 is not two thirds.

I don't know about making change but a few weeks ago I bought a couple things in a mall store and had them stamp my discount card and it only rang up to $15. I thought it was going to come to $21 or so, but didn't argue the issue. Later on I looked at the reciept and they never scanned one of the 4 things I bought. Even though it had one of those security tags that had to come off it to get it out of the store. I suppose the right thing to do would have been to go back and pay for it, but that store's an hour away from me, it would have cost twice the $6 in gas to go back.

Good to know the epidemic isn't isolated to only the people I have to deal with. It's everywhere and getting worse, I have experienced everything everybody else has and it seems like daily......George Carlin was right, they lowered the education standards cuz they don't want smart people out there, only sheep and worker bees...

  4. . The one thing thats bothered me about the auto parts industry for years now, Is that it's not to much different than dealing with someone who works at mcDonalds. Why has dealing autoparts had to turn into a minnimum wage/ no brains required, type of job where nobody knows what the hell they're doing. I was just contemplating a chain from the chicago area today, called forest city auto parts. Now those guys were good! but they closed all their locations mabey 10-15 years ago. So very sad.....
Heres a horror story for you'all... A few years back I walked into a murry's auto parts to buy a $10 carb rebuild kit for the one barrel for my chevy inline 6, but the ignorant clerk / kid kept insisting that what I needed was a $300 Edlebrock high performance 4 barrell Carberator!!! I kept insisting that he should just find me the $10 rebuild kit, and he kept insisting that I quit being cheap and cough up the $300!!!! I wound up screaming at him to explain to me how that 4barrell would fit on the six, and he only insisted that it could. The next day I happened to be in a different Murrays, when 2 gentleman asked me about my shopping experience after I had bought some different stuff. I asked why they wanted to know, and it turned out that they were regional managers, so I was more than happy to tell them about my experience the night before, and I asked them about the required stupidity level, and "mc Donalds mentality" of some of their employees! ( they're not all bad) They sounded impressed by my concerns and then asked If I'd ever consider a job as mangement in one of their stores....!!!!....Breaking forth applications instantly. I was unemployed at the time but politely wound up telling them, no, I wouldn't consider that low paying hell as a career choice.
My biggest peave is Probley this; It seems that most of the stores nowadays are dependant on their computer systems... It seems most all of them cant sell you a basic part for a 57 chevy !!!!! As if you were looking for parts for a model "T"!!!!
If it dosen't show up in their database, they can't even think about finding it for you.. C'mon guys!!!!! A 57' chevy??? I thought this was America!!!!!
The best choice for car parts around Illinois is Blain's FARM N" FLEET!!!!! they carry tons of old stuff, universal stuff, tools, oil, and TRACTOR PARTS!!! Often times I find the vintage stuff that I need is still sold ther as "tractor parts" they even have canister type oil filters sitting on the shelf!!!!!
ONce again.. I cannot offer enough praise for "FARM N" FLEET"!!!!!!!!!!!!

I own a 1976 GMC motorhome with the 455" Olds toronado front wheel drive. I went to NAPA for a rad hose. The girl insisted GMC's only came with 454 big blocks.

One of the local Advance parts stores gives decent service. Both managers have been at it for years and about 1/2 the folks there are into cars. There are a couple automotively retarded guys there, but they will work with you and at least give it the best they can. O'reiley's on this side of town has two decent guys, too. Carquest and NAPA are very good. The shame is, the same could be said about medical offices, definatlyu mt health insurance, the tax prep people and everywhere else. Not long ago, there was a bank teller that couldn't get the count of my cash right. She counts it wrong, but the same twice, then gives me a C-note back to reconcile my deposit slip and her count. When I stop her, she gets pissy with me. I wave her manager over as this could get stupid fast if I try to retrieve my money to get her straight. She was still having 'issues' the next time I went in there.
The 20ish kid at the flower shop today was great. He knew his stuff, was cordial and and seemed happy to do his job. Maybe we will be OK after all.

We've lost most of our manufacturing, and are left with a "service" economy. It's a shame we're not getting any good service. It's become a rarity when I come across a business that actually cares enough about their customers. This situation is a disgrace, and is getting worse all the time............Woody

  8. at the local auto parts store wonder what I'm going to ask for so they can try to find it, but a the Wal-mart I asked for a Christmas tree stand and the clerk told me they only come with the tree when it was explained that it was for a real tree she still didn't understand.

I originally posted this not so much as a "stupid employee" post, even though that's what we all face, but more of a WASTE post. The $$ that we spend on waste and much of it because of stupidity like this policy of selling only by the foot, or because they don't listen and cut the wrong legnth, etc etc etc etc. It has to ad up to billions of wasted dollars! That's good American dollars being pissed away for no damn reason.

It makes no difference if the customer is right or wrong. HE still pays yours pay check! If you don't believe it, try getting paid by a place that has no customers.

LOL...We had this happen recently, the girl had to get out a calculator to figure out our change...we just stood there amused.

But on a bright note...We stopped in a store and a young girl counted back our change the correct way. Didnt need a calculator or the register. We told her she did a nice job and were impressed. She said when she got the job her dad sat her down and taught her how to make change correctly because he didnt want his daughter coming across as an idiot.

Its wasnt an Oreillys parts store was it? I find that they hire the biggest ****ing *****s there. Not always, sometimes there is an exception...but not often. God damnit i hate that store. Ranks right there with walmart for me. But yeah i feel your pain man. Anyone ever have to go behind the counter and find your own ****..or mix your own ****ing paint at that damn store cuz they have one but not even the new manager can operate it?@!?@#$@#! Sorry had to vent.

  14. Does this have to do with "estimating"

My daughter is in the 5th grade. She sometimes needs help with her homework, so I help.
we do all the math questions and get the right answer. and double check to make sure.
it comes back marked incorrect on all of them because you are supposed to estimate the answer, not get the correct one..:confused::confused:
I was unaware that they were supposed to do it this way or I guess I could have tried better to get the wrong answer.

    WTF???

I liked it yesterday when my bill was 17.56 so I give them 22.76, so I get a 5 and two dimes back. then the girl puts my 2 ones aside, and pulls out 3 more ones and a quarter, a nickel and 4 pennies and says here you go.

What he was supposed to do was say, "Yes sir! Then he was supposed to cut you 1.5 ft piece, and charge you for 2 feet! , smiling and asking "is there anything else I can do for you?" Then, if you asked how much it is by the foot, he was supposed to say "I don't know, the computer does that for me."

  17. Yeah!!! It seems like they tend to keep alot of the common stuff behind the counter these days, like the origionally posted, fuel, va***e line post.... I can't tell you how many times I've had to "Infaltrate The counter" and cross "enemy lines" Just to get some hard brake or fuel lines. It pisses me off when I get up to the register and there are 128 different non auto related items in my face screaming "dont forget to buy me, mr. impulse buyer!!"

Well since everyone is already bashing everyone I will go the other way.

If you line in the GTA area of Ontario and need some parts that you cannot seem to find at Canadian Tire/Parts Source hit up the Carquest in Oshawa. They will go out of your way to find things you need, if they are not in the system they have a pile of books to flip through to find what you need. Also if its not in stock its usually there in the afternoon or next morning.

Plus it has a nice machine shop attached.

Want to have some fun, try to pay with a 2 dollar bill. The kids lose it. Been told that "I'm sorry we accept these" to having the manager called on me for trying to p*** counterfeit money. Got a free McD breakfast on that one. What the hell do they teach them in school today anyway?

  22. Who are "THEY"....and what are their motives???

  23. Not everybody out there can spot a SBC waterpump at 100 ft like we can.

The problem with the counter guy, is that he had 20 people that day that don't know what model Pontiac their parents bought them, and they want new windshield wipers for it.

The counter help has never been told that just because it's the 20th time today you've gotten a stupid question, doesn't give you the right to have an at***ude with the 21st person who asks the same stupid question. Yes, they need to be taught basic civility and patience, no you should have to do it, but...

When I walk into a AutoZone or Advanced, I usually say something like, "You've probably been asked this 100 times today..." to show a little empathy, and go on from there. Or just something to let them know that they won't getting a lot of "Idano, its out in the parking lot".

We usually need them to hunt a little harder to find parts that will work, or they may have to let us behind the counter to look for what I need myself, test fit different parts. We need a little more than wipers for a mystery Pontiac. A lot of the time, doing something extra for a customer who isn't so dumb is a nice change of pace.

If you and the counter help both go into the interaction with contempt for each other, you are going to get exactly the customer service you thought you were going to get when you walked in. If one of you diffuses it by leaving the contempt at home, something different will happen.

The "Yeah, Yeah, I'm the one paying, the customer is always right, blah, blah" ain't gonna get you the part you need because that guy/girl is the one standing between you and that part, until they come up with self-serve auto parts stores*, that's how it is.

Teach your kids patience, just because you have the means to get them that PS4 the day it comes out, doesn't mean you should. Don't let them get away with disrespecting you and others.

    * Take the time to think how f'd up things would be with that scenario.

Working at a parts counter for about ten years(plumbing supply house) I can give the other perspective. There is no way to charge for 18" of anything. Be it inventory or pricing. As for the at***ude you have no idea that last guy that walked out just busted your balls for 15 minutes looking for a 5.00 part. And when you're done, he tells you that he can go to home depot and get it .50 cheaper. Is it right to give the next customer at***ude, no but it's human nature. Also some guys walk in with a bad at***ude and if you ask any questions trying to get them what they need. They will get pissed.

  26. Some counter guys don't pay attention, don't care, OR aren't allowed to get creative on taking care of business properly to make a customer happy.
My managers don't understand how we buy driveshaft tubing by the stick and sell it by the inch according to whatever is correct for the job.

Went through a drive-through recently with my wife driving. When the clerk handed back change my wife saw it was too much by several dollars and tried to give the excess back. The clerk wouldn't take it and started to raise her voice arguing about it, attracting the attention of the store manager. When the manager heard from my wife what the problem was, I loved her response. She turned to her employee and said, "Miss, when a customer tries to give us extra money, we take it."

    Let me think. Hmmmmmmmmmmm.

So you were at work, doing your job, looking for a part a potential customer asked for, whilst on the clock, I presume?. Bustin your balls? For doing your(counter) job??
