Who's runnin' without a spare tire?

    Got a question...

When I fabricated a disc brake conversion for my 51 Stude, the original wheels no longer fit over the rotors, which gave me the perfect excuse to buy new chrome smoothies (only 4!).

However, the existing spare wheel/tire that I had obviously was useless, since it also could not fit. I've been running without a spare for almost 2 years and until recently never gave it much thought. Question - is it worth it to buy another wheel/tire? Should I grab something cheap from the pick-a-part? Should I (God forbid) get a mini spare? What's the consensus out there? Other than a paid-up AAA card, I really haven't planned for the inevitable flat tire.

As long as you have AAA ..no spare is needed. I never had one in any of my cars..no room for it

Since any real hot rod MUST have bigs and littles, which spare are you gonna carry? Carry a front and you'll only get a rear flat and vice versa. Buy a can of Fix-A-Flat, carry a cell phone and live a little.

I carry a bottle of tube sealer, a portable tank w/compressed air and spare tubes when I go on road trips. I figure the sealer and air tank should get me far enough to have the tube changed. And if that doesn't work, that's where the cell phone comes in.

Living on the edge with a AAA membership is an oxymoron!

Not me. Have jack, some tools, sandwiches, beer, and etc. :D

I have better things to do than wait for a tow truck, or call a friend for something like the absence of a spare tire. I'd call a tow truck before imposing on somebody for my own oversight. Would bother somebody else for more unforseen circumstances. Four on the ground are more important than any other breakdown scenario.
It's the nanny-syndrome that I resist, I guess. I like to be self sufficient on forseeable situations.

I carry spoons, patches, plug kit, and an 8 foot length of hose that I can take a spark plug out and install in the hole. Start engine and inflate. I'm sure someone is gonna say its dangerous but I did it with JEEP's for 20 years with no problems.

OK, I don't feel too "edgy" with AAA, but my car will never see a trailer, so I just thought I would ask. I've got room for a spare in the trunk, but there are better things to spend money on.

Sorry, Zookeeper, all 4 of my tires are the same size, but I never claimed to be a real hotrodder! After all, I drive a Studebaker with a flat 6...

I have a cell phone, friends and for those times I don't mind waiting an hour or two... AAA. Yea, in Houston an hour wait is normal, unless you break down in front of a AAA wrecker.

depend on which car. The one I drive daily, heck yes. I have even used a mini-spare before. Just throw a towel or blanket over it and you won't even know what it is. I prefer to be as self-sufficient as possible

On my 37 I had a 4 x 15 rim made and mounted a VW bug sized Michelin on it. It was taller than the front tire but smaller than the rear, so it would work in a pinch for bigs n littles and wasn't too wide to hide in the trunk.

No spare planned on the 27x, so I plan to carry a coiled air hose and use my Air Ride compressor to fill the flats after I plug the hole! Tricky... Gary

I carry a spare the same size as my rears,(so not to screw up my posi) which happens to clear my front fender if I lose a front. Also I carry a cheap hyd. jack and 4 way, a cell phone and AAA card. I've been in many areas a few hundred miles from home with no cell reception, and don't want to be that guy on the side of the road feeling helpless.
Of course I've never had a flat in over 33k miles of driving!

I carry a 12v air compressor, a can of fix a flat, and a plug kit. About 20 years that way now, only had one blowout that I couldn't get home without help.

I didn't used to but last time at pickapart I broke down and picked up one of those donut spares that was the right size. I figure just having it guarantees I won't have to use it! :D

EDIT: I also have AAA Premium or whatever their highest package is...just in case!
Sounds like a lot of HAMBers are members in good standing!

Cell phone has always worked for me until a recent trip where I couldn't get coverage to save my life or fix a flat if I would have had one. Probably won't start carrying a spare over it though.
