In 1988 I built this car before the term Rat Rod was used--I called it basic--built it with a $2000 budget-took 3 months to build with parts laying around-was a 30 Chev with a 289 ford in it--had no interior other than seats--but was fully roadworthy--sold it at a rod run in Albquerque NM--parked it next to a Blown billet Willys with a 60K price tag on the window--wrote 6k on mine--Had to ride the bus home

I don't have any pictures of mine, but I was driving (yes, my daily) a '47 Willys CJ2A with a 327 Chevy mill, headers, SHORT pipes and Cherry Bomb glass packs. Still had the tiny ass drum brakes and 5.38:1 gears. Top speed was about 45, but you could do that straight up the side of a building. With those little brakes, you had to start slowing down long before you ever started rolling. It was, to say the least, an adventure to drive. Tons of fun, though. I'd flop the windshield forward, throw a scarf around my neck, don the goggles and go scare the shit out of the rich folks on the Plaza in KC. Not a real practical car, but a blast, none the less.

Twenty years ago I had a pink (dusty rose metallic) '57 Coupe de Ville. Thirty years ago I had a chopped, channeled, fenderless '30 A coupe with a 289, C-4 and Mustang rear, split wishbones, deuce grille shell, in primer. I didn't call it a rat rod; I called it unfinished.

    "57 Chevy...

'Course then again, I was driving a '57 Chevy 25 years ago...and 30 years ago...and 35 years ago...matter of small fact, I had a three year old '57 Chevy when I graduated high school in 1961...

Bigger fact...I've never been without a '57 Chevy my whole life...and at one time in the 1970's, I owned 30 of them...!!! I'm down to one now.

In 1978, I opened my shop, rode the Shovelhead almost everyday, and towed the Anglia to the track with an old beater Luv pickup or my dad's 74 Ford F-100.

By 1988, I was still riding the Shovel, I'd taken the Anglia apart (still in pieces), parked my dads 74 F-100 (still parked with 55,000 miles on it), started putting this Panhead together, and was driving a beater 60 Chevy short, narrow, pickup with a 327/muncie 4 speed in it(never took a picture of the truck). I was still wondering if the shop would make it.

Today, I still wonder about the shop. (G)
